Brussels Ferry is in operation ...

Grafton Ferry is Closed due to high water

Updated Sun at 6:25PM

The Golden Eagle Ferry is open.
There is some water on the road tonight, the prediction is for it to crest tomorrow with 3 more inches still to come over night and then it is forecasted to drop out quickly.
We will have one ferry open at each location.
The Winfield Ferry will operate tomorrow morning starting at 5am.
If we crest and start to see a fall tomorrow morning then we will move the ferry at Winfield back to Golden Eagle for rush hour tomorrow night.
I will send a new e-mail out tomorrow.

Thank You,
The Calhoun Ferry Company

The Picture of the Day .....

Hey, Bill!

Here are a few shots from last Saturday afternoon from Palisades Yacht Club.

We went downriver to check out the fall colors on the bluffs and stopped at Palisades for some refreshments (you know they have the best view of the bluffs on the river). That's Katy and friend Melanie on the boat, and me and my brother KC on the dock (pictures by Mary).

As we left we apparently came across the ACBS river cruise just passing the shrine. We couldn't get decent pics of all of them, but these were the better ones. It's nice to see the old boats in such great shape and still cruising.

See ya on the ole Miss,
Rick Mary & Katy

Press Release

    US Army Corps of Engineers

Area rivers to crest above flood stage, Corps of Engineers warns

St. Louis, Mo. -- The rain that has pounded the region during October marks the month as the rainiest October on record in St. Louis.  As a result, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers water control managers and the National Weather Service are monitoring are streams and rivers, both for flash flooding and for longer term impacts on the main rivers of the region.

While predicted river flows and elevations are no where near record highs, the Mississippi Missouri and Illinois Rivers are predicted to reach flood stages  as early as Saturday.   The Mississippi River at St. Louis is currently predicted to crest at 35.0 feet, Monday.  Flood stage in St. Louis is 30.0 feet.  For comparison, on July 1, 2008, the river in St. Louis crested at 38.67 feet.

The Corps of Engineers in St. Louis is closely coordinating with Corps Districts north and south of St. Louis, as well as with the National Weather Service.  According to District Commander, Col. Thomas O’Hara, “While local rain can cause localized flash flooding, main river floods are usually the cumulative results of rainfalls upstream as well as here.  The local flood risk reduction systems are functioning well and we believe they will continue to do so.  But it’s prudent to keep the public’s safety in uppermost in our mind and we are.”

Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District Water Control Office operations chief Joan Stemler said, “Rain that has fallen in recent days has saturated the ground.  As a result, almost everything that is falling now is running off almost immediately and rivers are rising area-wide.  Our reservoir lakes are rising as well, although for now they are well able to hold inflows that we will release later when the rain stops and rivers come down.”

The Corps of Engineers partners with local levee districts and area government organizations as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for flood fighting if necessary.

The Corps also operates locks and dams on the Mississippi River.  While these are not flood control structures and have only minimal impact on flooding, they are operated to minimize flooding while continuing to support navigation.  In all instances, public safety is the Corps number one mission.

The region last faced wide spread flooding in 2008, but just as last summer, localized flash flooding is always a threat.

Corps of Engineers reservoir lakes also are experiencing high water from the rain.  Boaters are being cautioned to be aware of floating debris that enters lakes from the rivers that form them and visitors are being warned to avoid flood prone areas.  At Wappapello Lake in southeastern Missouri, some low lying camp grounds have been closed due to rising waters.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers safety experts and other authorities want to remind long time residents and inform newcomers of several measures they may take to best ensure their own safety.

    • Keep up with weather reports and other notices.  The media works to get the most up to date information out.  Listen to and watch news reports so you are not caught unprepared.  If local emergency authorities advise any action, follow their directions immediately.
    • If you live in a flood-prone area have a plan.  Know what you will take with you, where you will go and who you will inform when you get there.
    • Don’t drive into water on roads.  Road surfaces may be damaged or gone and rapidly flowing water can move a car into danger without warning.    If you encounter water on the road, turn around and seek another route.  There is no short cut to safety.
    • Floods are not tourist events.  Stay away from them and ensure Children do so as well.  Watch them on TV instead of being in them.

You may track river and other weather data on at least two web sites.

Meramec River Rescue Update

Boys In A Little Hot Water After Rescue.............

Bradley Edwards and his pal, Mike Melchior slipped off the the Meramec River to fish during their day off from school.  Bradley wanted a closer look at a snake he noticed in the River, slipped on a rock and fell in the water.

After failing to retrieve his buddy, Mike called for help on his cell phone.  The Rock Community Fire District responded quickly, snatching Bradley from the water, safe and sound.

While the boys' parents were happy to hear both boys were O.K., Bradley's mother thought the boys were fishing at a creek that runs through their neighborhood.  Mom's parting words to Bradley when he left to go fishing were "Please stay away from the Meramec".............

For 3Q 2009, net revenues fell to $168.2 million from the $180.2 million reported for 3Q 2008.

West Marine credits the decrease to the fiscal calendar shift from 2008, leaving fewer peak season days in the third quarter, in addition to store closings over the past 5 quarters reducing net revenues by $8.9 million..............

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

New Water Standards Ordered By EPA............

According to a news report from fox2now.com.............  New clean water standards have been ordered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the 28 1/2 miles of Mississippi River surrounding St. Louis. The EPA wants to see the water clean enough for swimming.

This stretch of the River is being polluted by billions of gallons of waste and sewage each year. This is due to overflow from the out dated sewer systems that combine raw sewage and street runoff.  When the system is overwhelmed during heavy rains, excess flows into the River.

The EPA states that infrastructure improvements are the only way to remedy the situation.  The Metropolitan Sewer District is currently spending $6 billion to fix the problem...............

I found another photo of the GOLDEN EAGLE FERRY while still operating. Here is it posing for the camera April 15, 1955

Judging from its landed position, I would guess it is the Illinois side of the river.

No doubt the passengers in those cars on the ferry have their windows rolled up for the duration of the crossing, in difference to that livestock truck

   Dredging at Pere Marquette

Yesterday's E-mail question about Dredging

Bill,

What is up with the dredge material being pumped into bags at Pere Marquette?? Sorry - did not have a camera. The dredge is pumping the material into large black plastic bag type structures as big as greenhouses. At the moment it already looks like enough to cover a football field and there are still plenty more bags to unroll.

Wondering how they will move it and why they are doing it that way.

U.S.Army Corps of Engineers Response

Bill,
Good question! I queried our regulatory folks to see what they had and their
answer is below. Work's being performed by a contractor for IDNR. I wish
ALL questions were that easy! Thank you (and your friend) for asking.

George,

They place the dredge material into geotube bags to contain silts and filter
out the water. This is good for the environment and doesn't allow silts and
contaminants to re-enter the river.

From what I recall, the material in the geotubes will stay in place until the
material inside dewaters and becomes more solid. At that point the tubes
will be cut open and the material inside will be hauled to non-jurisdictional
upland areas.

Thanks
Chuck

Corps of Engineers waives day-use fees
at recreation areas on Veterans Day

ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today announced it will waive day-use fees for veterans, active and reserve component service members and their families at the more than 2,400 Corps-operated recreation areas nationwide on Veterans Day, November 11. The fee waiver will apply not only to St. Louis District’s five multi-purpose reservoirs of Carlyle Lake, Rend Lake, Lake Shelbyville, Wappapello Lake and Mark Twain Lake, but to all Corps of Engineers day-use areas nation-wide where visitors would normally be charged a fee.

"We began this initiative in 2006 to support and honor the men and women who have served the nation and the armed forces,” said Steve Stockton, director of Civil Works for the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers. "We encourage our veterans, active and reserve component personnel and their families to visit one of our many recreation areas and enjoy their favorite outdoor activities.”

The day-use fee waiver requires only verbal confirmation of service. This waiver covers boat launch ramp and swim beach fees. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services or fees for specialized facilities, such as picnic shelters. Other agencies that manage recreation areas on Corps lands are encouraged, but not required to offer the Veterans Day waiver of fees in the areas that they manage.

The Corps is the largest federal provider of outdoor and water-based recreation in the nation and hosts more than 350 million visits each year at its lakes, beaches and other areas. Corps lands and waters provide approximately 4,500 miles of trails, 3,400 boat launch ramps and 33 percent of all U.S. freshwater fishing. To discover the Corps recreation area near you, please visit

Missouri River Dams

    Study Reviews Dam Purposes............

In a news article from kmov.com..............  According to officials from states along the Missouri River, a study that congress ordered will assist in the determination of whether changes are necessary to the legally authorized purposes of 6 reservoirs constructed on the Missouri River.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is to re-evaluate the original uses lined out by the 1944 Flood Control Act.  The Flood Control Act authorized the construction of dams in Montana, North and South Dakota.

The upstream states want to keep water, to support recreation such as fishing and boating, whereas the downstream states need water for barge traffic..........

Flow Analysis Demonstrates Need To Raise Levees....................

According to a news story from djc-gp.com...................  After the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers performed a more sophisticated technical analysis of the flow of the Mississippi River, they concluded that some levee sections will need to be raised.

The reason is that researchers discovered that the levels of the Mississippi River were in fact lower than normal for hurricane season during Katrina.

Apparently, several miles of levees need to be raised from a half a foot, to 3 1/2 feet at mile marker 70.............

Carbon Monoxide: Silent but Deadly

ST. LOUIS – Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless gas that can bring a tragic end to the lives of recreational enthusiast. Because it is impossible to see, taste or smell the toxic fumes can kill you before you are aware that it is present. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Each year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning, more than 20,000 visit the emergency room and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning.”

The US Army Corps of Engineers encourages recreational enthusiasts, such as campers, boaters and hunters, to be aware of this silent and invisible killer this winter. Winter is a particularly significant time for such exposure, as it is the time that furnaces, boilers, generators, and portable heaters are running overtime, to keep us warm. The following safety information describes where carbon monoxide poisoning can accumulate inside a motor home, camper, caravan, trailer, houseboat, tent, or hunting blind, how to spot the symptoms of poisoning, and the steps you can take to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

Why is Carbon Monoxide so dangerous?
Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur in any situation where a person is exposed to an incomplete burning of fossil fuel. Thus, engine exhaust, defective furnaces or heaters, wood-burning stoves, gas stoves & ovens, space heaters, portable grills, portable generators and camp fires can all cause CO poisoning. These poisonings occur most often when this type of equipment is used in buildings or semi-enclosed spaces such as motor home, camper, caravan, trailer, houseboat, tent, or hunting blind. Be aware that carbon monoxide can remain in or around your recreational vehicle at dangerous levels even if equipment or engines are no longer running.

The colorless, tasteless, and odorless gas enters a victim’s bloodstream through the lungs, blocking oxygen and preventing the body from properly functioning. Prolonged exposure to small concentrations or sudden exposures to high concentrations are equally lethal. Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include eye irritation, headache, nausea, weakness, and dizziness. These symptoms are often confused with seasickness or intoxication so those affected may not receive needed medical attention before it becomes fatal.

Common Carbon Monoxide sources onboard recreational vehicles may include but are not limited to:
- Engines
- Generators
- Gas Stove and ovens
- Space & water heaters

Protecting Yourself & Others
The US Army Corps of Engineers recommends recreational enthusiast take the following steps to protect themselves and others from the dangers of carbon monoxide:

- In any area where you sleep, especially in the enclosed space of a motor home, camper, caravan, trailer, houseboat, tent, or hunting blind it is crucial that you have a CO detector to ensure that you are not inhaling the potentially poisonous fumes of carbon monoxide. Do not ignore the alarms and replace the batteries as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Maintain a fresh circulation of air through and around your recreational vehicle at all times.
- Treat symptoms of seasickness as possible carbon monoxide poisoning and quickly get the victim to a well ventilated area.
- Avoid any area of the recreational vehicle where exhaust fumes may be present. If exhaust fumes are detected, take immediate action to ventilate the affected area.
- Most importantly, be aware of the risks associated with carbon monoxide, what it is; where it may accumulate; and the symptoms of CO poisoning. To protect yourself, your passengers, and those around you, learn all you can about CO.

More information concerning carbon monoxide poisoning can be found at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention http://www.cdc.gov/ , the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission http://www.cpsc.gov/nsn/COSafety.pdf, the CO Action Group http://www.coactiongroup.org/or by contacting your local U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Project Office.

Correction ..........

RiverBills.com ran a news story and video link yesterday morning about flooding at Alton, IL. It was an error ! There is no flooding in Alton. RiverBill's picked up an old news clip, probably from last year !
Sorry for the confusion !

Bill,

This is Jeremy Fowler from the Alton Marina. One of my slipholders e-mailed me this morning asking what we are doing about the flooding that is shown on Riverbills today. I checked your site, and it appears that you have footage from the Telegraph website showing flood preparations from last year's flood. Alton is currently at low water (10AM Gauge shows pool at 414.4, Five feet down from normal of 419)
I am sure that this was an oversight, and maybe you meant to post it as river history, but it is causing a bit of confusion. Could you please correct the posting or remove it?

Thank you very much!

Missouri And Red River Valleys

Governor Nixon Opposes Missouri River Diversion.............

According to a news report from missouriruralist.com................  Missouri Governor, Jay Nixon, is pressing the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar to reject the proposal to divert water from the Missouri River basin, and pump it to the Red River Valley.

The diversion was proposed to provide more water resources for eastern North Dakota, as well as portions of Minnesota.

Governor Nixon sent a letter to Salazar, in which he requested the consideration of an "in basin" option that would utilize resources in the Red River Valley.  This option would not only cost less, have less impact on the environment,  and could be quickly implemented, and scaled to meet actual water needs............

Boat Manufacturer

Third Quarter Results In For Marine Products Corp............

According to a news report from tradeonlytoday.com..............  The manufacturer of Chaparral and Robolo boats, Marine Products Corp., has announced a 72.3% decrease in net sales, and a 75.7% decrease in the number of boats sold during the third quarter of 2009.

Marine Products produced net sales of $8.73 million for 3Q 2009, versus $31.58 million for 3Q 2008.  The drop in net sales was attributed to the decrease in boats sold.

Marine Products CEO, Richard A. Hubbell states that even though financial results were negatively impacted by low sales to dealers, and the financial backing of dealer inventory reduction efforts, it was an investment to prepare for better times in the future.............

News Story Removed !

According to a news report from fox2now.com..................  Annually, the outdated sewer system in St. Louis, Missouri allow some 13 million gallons of raw sewage to flow into the Mississippi River, and the River Des Peres.  That equates to about 600 tank cars.

The Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) has launched a campaign publicizing how bad the problem is, and how much the needed repairs will cost the public.

It is expected that MSD will be spending $2 billion atop the $4 billion that is currently being spent controlling runoff, of they will be facing severe federal penalties............

Mississippi River At New Orleans

Corps Can't Protect New Orleans From Flooding..............

According to a news report from theage.com.au.............  The chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, General Robert van Antwerp, has announced that the Corps cannot protect the city of New Orleans from flooding.  General Antwerp further stated that his team was in "personal conflict" with the Mississippi River.

Efforts to reduce the risk of flooding include improved early warning systems, improved evacuation strategies, and improved levee systems to hold back most of the water.

The newly formed Office of Coastal Protection has been tasked with the reconstruction of some of the barrier islands lining the gulf coast, in an effort to protect wetlands from wave action.  Behind the barrier islands are the remains of marshlands, now dotted oil rigs..............

Mississippi River At St. Cloud, Minnesota

New Mississippi River Bridge Opens Thursday.............

According to a news article from kare11.com.............  Thursday marks the opening of the new Granite City Crossing Bridge over the Mississippi River at St. Cloud.  People attending the dedication ceremony were allowed to walk across the nearly completed span.

The Granite City Crossing Bridge replaced the De Soto Bridge, that was torn down after inspectors found distorted gusset plates.

The new bridge was completed in only 18 months.  Since the contractor finished ahead of schedule, they will be given a bonus................

Click here to read this news article.

The De Soto Bridge

Constructed in 1958, the De Soto Bridge carried 4 lanes of Minnesota Highway 23 over the Mississippi River.  As the banks of the Mississippi River are so steep on either bank, the Bridge featured deep trusses, and was painted black, which was atypical of highway bridges.

Following the 2007 collapse of the I-35 bridge in Minneapolis, this De Soto Bridge was inspected and deemed safe.  However, during a follow-up inspection in 2008, 4 bent gusset plates were discovered, and the bridge was ordered closed..............

The Pictures of the Day  ..... were sent in by Capt'n Mark Cutler who hails out of Lake Center marina in the cruiser....Cutty's Ark.

Hi Bill,

Just wanted to send you a few pics of last saturday at Cedar Hill Resort. There were some costumes, pumpkin decorating, and good times. In the pictures you can see the youngest pumpkin decorator, Hayden Bicknese. He had to use a sharpie, not a knife! Also you can see that pumpkins weren't the only thing to get decorated. There was a good mix of small and large boats and the harbor there at Cedar Hill was almost full.

Just another beautiful day on the river!

According to a news story from wordpress.com.............  The National Park Service has announced that Times Beach Bridge has been named to the National Register of Historic Places.

Constructed in 1931, the Times Beach Bridge carried Route 66 over the Meramec River, and now brings visitors to Route 66 State Park.

Arch Grounds Re-Vitalization Plans May Include Water Taxi............

According to a news article from bnd.com...............  In an effort to change the accessibility to the Gateway Arch grounds, the National Park Service released their final management plan for the 91 acre Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Grounds.

Following the feedback garnered from 11 public meetings, the National Park Service realizes that the public wants easier connections to get onto the Arch grounds.

Several ideas have been proposed for upgrading the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial to modern times, without losing the vision of Eero Saarinen.  Besides the modernization of the Museum of Westward Expansion exhibits, a seasonal water taxi from East St. Louis is under consideration............

Illinois River Near Hennepin, Illinois

Central Illinois Habitat Rehab Begins With Removal Of Carp.............

According to a news story from wqad.com.............  A central Illinois marsh and lake habitat is on the way to be restored, with the focus on removing the destructive carp.  The carp stirs up the lake bottoms, rooting out plants, and destroying the habitat.

This particular habitat is critical to migrating waterfowl, since it is located at a major "interchange" of a central flyway, where northwesterly ducks turn south.  Carp have been upsetting the ecosystem since 2006, and the waterfowl population has steadily declined.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has teamed up with the Wetlands Initiative to work on the Hennepin and Hopper Lakes Project.  This ecosystem covers 2,600 acres, and is on the Illinois River, South of Hennepin, Illinois...............

Large Crane Taking A River Trip En Route To Kansas City..............

In a news report from ksdk.com.............  A crane too big to be shipped via the highway system has been dismantled, and sent up the Missouri River, from St. Louis to Kansas City.  The crane left the St. Louis area Thursday.

The 325 foot long crane has a 60 foot jib, and sits on a steel ring, allowing it to swivel.  The crane will be utilized during the construction of a new bridge at Kansas City over the Missouri River.

The Missouri Department of Transportation states  that it is quite unusual to see a crane so large used for inland waterway projects.  In a former life, the crane completed several projects in the Netherlands..............

MR-GO Update

Last Piling Driven For Permanent MR-GO Barrier..............

According to a news article from nola.com...............  On Wednesday, the final steel piling was driven into the clay beneath the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet (MR-GO) and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.

The 1,271 foundation pilings are the beginning of a $1 billion, 1.8 mile permanent barrier to close the MR-GO, in an effort to protect the New Orleans area from hurricane related storm surges.

Earlier this summer, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractor had constructed a rock blockade that prevented marine traffic from using the MR-GO, but was not intended to stop storm surges.............

Hennepin & Hopper Lakes to Undergo Rehab, Carp Removal

SPRINGFIELD- Rehabilitation of the marsh and lake habitats at the Hennepin and Hopper Lakes Project has begun this fall through the joint efforts of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the Wetlands Initiative (TWI).

The efforts will focus on removing the destructive common carp, which has been wreaking havoc on the aquatic ecosystem since 2006. The invasive, bottom-feeding carp stirs up the lake bottom, rooting out plants, reducing water clarity, and ultimately destroying the marsh habitat.

“It’s time to bite the bullet and remove the carp,” said Al Pyott, TWI board member and co-founder. “It’s painful because we’ll lose the lakes for a year, but it has to be done to restore the entire habitat for all the species that depend on Hennepin and Hopper.”

“This aquatic rehabilitation project is designed to re-establish Hennepin and Hopper Lakes as an important backwater lake area,” said Wayne Herndon, IDNR district fisheries biologist. “We have very few of these vital habitats on the river that depend on vegetation to maintain water quality, so it’s critical that we regain this marsh habitat.”

The 2,600-acre Hennepin and Hopper Lakes Project, located along the Illinois River south of Hennepin, is owned by TWI and several nonprofit organizations and is managed by TWI. Since 2001, TWI has been restoring the historic lakes to create a high-quality backwater lake habitat in order to improve water quality, provide wildlife habitat, and to offer a place for the public to enjoy Illinois’ historic native landscapes. Prior to 2001, the lakes had been drained for 90 years to support corn and soybean farming. The lakes were opened to public fishing in 2004.....click here to read more

Fish Stories From The Mississippi River

llinois Man Catches 64 lb Flathead Catfish........

According to a news story from bnd.com.............      When Josh Adkins returned home from college to scout out deer on the family property in Hancock County, Illinois, he and his cousin decided to go fishing on the Mississippi River near Lock and Dam No. 19 near Keokuk, Iowa.

The duo dropped anchor close to the dam at a hole that dropped from 4 to 20 feet deep.  Adkins had good luck fishing there before.

Using a large piece of Asian carp for bait,  Adkins felt a tug, and thought he snagged a spoonbill catfish.  Little did he know that after a 30 minute fight, he would reel in a 64 lb flathead catfish.

The Illinois state record for the biggest flathead catfish caught is 78 lbs.......................

The Picture of the Day  .....  is from Capt'n Dave Zaloz, who hails out of Bluff View Marina, Clearwater Lake

Hey River Bill:

Saw your website and wanted to post a cool pic we took this past month. We are in the process of building a new marina store and have had it anchored along the shoreline for initial construction. The store was recently moved to its permanent location in order to beat the fall winds and rain. This picture shows the store being moved in the early morning as the sun was rising and burning off the morning fog from the lake.

We like to call it the phoenix rising from the ashes due to all the damage that was sustained on Clearwater Lake from the 2008 floods, 5”’ ice storm in Jan 2009, and the inland hurricane during May 2009.

Here’s to a prosperous and fruitful future.

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day from 2008.........   were from Sherri Stanczak

Hi, Bill,
Here are some photos I took last night (10-05-08). While we were at the beach, Denny Schwandt and his wife, Mary flew over the beach in their sea plane. Mike waved at them from the sandbar and they turned around and pulled right up to the beach. He even took a few of our friends for a ride. We met Denny last week at Boaters for M.S. His mother died from M.S. a few years ago, so he wanted to do something for the benefit. He donated a 1/2 ride for our auction. They are both very sweet people and they were a hit last night when they drew in a crowd at the beach.

Delta Queen

New Legislation Introduced to Enable Her to Cruise Again

According to a news report from wqmf.com..............  Indiana Congressman, Baron Hill has filed an amendment that would enable the historic Delta Queen to cruise the Rivers once again.

Last year, congress elected to vote down the exemption of the Coast Guard Authorization Act that permitted the Delta Queen to operate.  The Act does not allow the operation of any wooden vessel that carries over 50 overnight passengers.

Congressman Hill is convinced that the Queen is safe, and should resume cruising.  At this time, the Queen is docked in Chattanooga, Tennessee............

Brussels Ferry

Long Lines For Brussells  Ferry Worry Business Owners..........

According to a news article from thetelegraph.com.............  Even though October is the pinnacle of the tourist season for Calhoun County, Illinois, the Brussels Ferry is only operating one of their two boats.  Many tourists and local business owners are frustrated by the long wait for a ferry ride across the Illinois River.

The Brussels Ferry runs from Grafton, Illinois in Jersey County, to peninsular Calhoun County on the other shore.  Calhoun County is the scenic finger of land between the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), who operate the free Brussells Ferry, moved the second Brussells Ferry to Kampsville, Illinois to assist with traffic during the annual Old Settlers Days.  Following Old Settlers Days, the ferry was to be put into dry dock for needed repairs.  IDOT has requested extra repair workers to expedite the vessel's dry dock time............

Illinois River

Champions Of The Illinois River Honored..........

According to a news story from centralillinoisnewscenter.com.............  On Tuesday evening, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, and U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood were given awards for their years fighting to preserve the Illinois River.

Their biggest concern was the fear of the Illinois River silting in due to farmland erosion, and debris flowing down river.

The preservation effort began by persuading farmers to set aside land to plant ground cover as opposed to crops.  Another program was the Mud to Parks program, where mud from the Illinois River was loaded onto a barge, and sent up river to Chicago, where it was used to convert a former steel yard to a Riverfront Park..........

Mississippi River

Study Shows The Mississippi River May Save Costal Louisiana......

According to a news article from WLOX.com..............  A study released Tuesday, from the American Geophysical Union, states that if 45% of the Mississippi River's flow was diverted into 2 badly eroded basins south of New Orleans, between 271 and 470 square miles of land could be built within the next century.

The goal of the study was to get a better idea of how much land could be built from a diversion of the Mississippi River.  Diversions have proven to be a quite effective method of building new land.

Other researchers that have studied Louisiana's disappearing coastline dilemma state that diversion projects will not save delta communities, protect infrastructure, and that promises for protection from storms, and storm surges have been wildly overblown..........

Missouri's Winter Trout Season Begins Nov. 09............

According to a news story on the Missouri Department of Conservation website .... Missouri's winter trout season begins on the same day as the state's deer season.....Nov.14.  A light turnout is expected.

The Missouri Department of Conservation will still stock the normal amount of fish even thought a lighter than normal turnout is expected.   The stocking rates in the Winter are lower than those during the peak fishing months, because harvesting is not permitted. Winter season stocking includes large fish that are not needed for brood stock at the trout hatcheries. That means there are more “lunkers” to catch !

This year’s winter no-creel season runs from Nov. 09 through Feb. 11.

Mississippi River

Composer's Solo Journey Down The Mississippi Becomes A Group Ensemble

According to a news story from thetelegraph.com................  Grammy nominated music composer, Eve Beglarian, of New York, took off with her kayak on August 1, 2009, to see firsthand what the whole Mississippi River thing was all about.

Traveling with her red 17 foot kayak, a bicycle, and a Honda Accord, she made it to Alton, Illinois on October 9th.  In an awkward routine, she drives downstream to drop off the bike, drives back to the kayak, floats downstream, and then bikes back to the car.   10 miles of progress ends up taking all day.

Many notable people have joined Beglarian on her trip, including violinist Mary Rowell, dramaturge for the New York city opera, Cori Ellison, and Chicago poet, Caroline Walker.

Beglarian is composing music during her journeys, and during the planned trip upriver next year, she plans to perform several community-involved concerts that focus on whatever city she is in................

True River Rats Living Aboard, Even During Winter............

According to a news report from startribune.com...............  Several folks have shucked off the trappings of modern life, disposed of many of their material possessions, and have taken to living on the River - full time.

Some River residents state that moving onto a houseboat means getting rid of possessions.  Summed up by River Rat Mike Anderson:  "When one pot comes aboard, another has to go."

Judy Oelerking believes that getting rid of possessions and moving aboard a houseboat is "Cleansing".  She also asserts that you tend to get rid of things that don't matter, stuff you don't need............

Eight Outboards

   $130,000 worth of Motors !

Capt'n Don Bright sent us a link to an article on Tony Rogers.com about the boat above with eight outboards on it and the company that manufactures it.  The picture has been floating around on the net for quite a while..... here the story on it.

The managing director of Crompton Marine and his girlfriend were arrested back in 2004 after the Spanish authorities seized a number of boats manufactured Crompton Marine during Spanish anti-drug smuggling operations.

The two were suspected of using company as a front for making high-speed inflatable boats for illegal drug runners.  The boat was advertised as "high-speed, uncatchable craft that have a low radar signature."

This boat was loaded with 300 kilograms of cocaine when it was seized.  That's about $4.2 million dollars.

Brunswick Announces Maxum Brand Discontinued .............

According to a news article from tradeonlytoday.com..............  Brunswick has announced that in an effort to cut costs, they will be discontinuing their Maxum Boat line.  Brunswick established the brand in 1988 perhaps as a line between Bayliner and Sea Ray.

Maxum Boats were sold through Bayliner dealers.  As Maxum had no dedicated manufacturing plant, there is expected to be no changes in production for Brunswick.

With the demise of Maxum, Brunswick still manufactures 16 U.S. based boat brands, not including the brands manufactured in Europe and New Zealand.............

Despite Economy, Tackle & Fishing License Sales Up

According to a news report from the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation...... fishing license and tackle sales are up 8 percent despite the economy. It's been one of the best years since the 70s for an increase in fishing license sales.

The slow economy may be a contributing factor..... people now have more time  for outdoor activities and recreational fishing offers a low cost alternative to other forms of recreation.

PORTE DES MORTS PASSAGE, Wis.
Seaman Bruce Cobb of Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw disables a light-emitting diode (LED) on an aid to navigation after it is secured on Mackinaw's buoy deck, Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008. Mackinaw is replacing aids to navigation with smaller seasonal aids prior to ice season. (U.S. Coast Guard Photo/Petty Officer 3rd Class George L. Degener)

Coast Guard begins Operation Fall Retrieve

CLEVELAND - The Ninth Coast Guard District has begun its annual retrieval of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway System seasonal aids to navigation, the largest domestic buoy recovery operation in the United States.

Operation Fall Retrieve, which includes lighted and unlighted buoys and beacons, commenced Oct. 14, 2009, with a goal of retrieving 1,284 navigational aids, and should be completed by Dec. 21, 2009. The aids, approximately half in the region, are taken out of service during the winter months due to decreased vessel traffic and to minimize damage from ice and inclement weather.

The Ninth Coast Guard District's aids to navigation system facilitates safe and efficient maritime activity in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway region by marking safe passage for domestic, international, commercial and recreational vessel traffic. The Coast Guard manages 2,628 federal aids in the region.

The waters of the United States and its territories are marked to assist navigation by the U.S. Aids-to-Navigation System. This system employs a simple arrangement of colors, shapes, numbers and light characteristics to mark navigable channels, waterways and obstructions adjacent to them.

Aids to Navigation can provide a boater with the same type of information drivers get from street signs, stop signals, road barriers, detours and traffic lights. These aids may be anything from lighted structures, beacons, day markers, range lights, fog signals and landmarks to floating buoys. Each has a purpose and helps in determining location, getting from one place to another or staying out of danger.

To accomplish the aids to navigation mission, the Ninth Coast Guard District employs six Coast Guard cutters, five Aids-to-Navigation Teams; five small boat stations with aids-to-navigation duties; the Lamplighters, civilian employees who manage the inland waters of Northern Minnesota, and partner with the Canadian Coast Guard and the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation.

In addition, the Ninth District Coast Guard Auxiliary helps inspect approximately 3,000 privately-owned aids to navigation in the region.

Mercury speculates that between 80 and 100 jobs will be affected, but given the expected retirements, and consolidation plans may offset some or all of the positions.

According to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia:

A showboat, or show boat, was a form of theater that traveled along the waterways of the United States, especially along the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. A showboat was basically a barge that resembled a long, flat-roofed house, and in order to move down the river, it was pushed by a small tugboat (misleadingly labeled a towboat) which was attached to it. It would have been impossible to put a steam engine on it, since it would have had to have been placed right in the auditorium.
However, since the box-office success of MGM's 1951 motion picture version of the musical Show Boat, in which the boat was inaccurately redesigned as a deluxe, self-propelled steamboat, the image of a showboat as a twin-stacked steamboat with a huge paddle wheel has taken hold in popular culture

Mississippi River At St. Charles Parrish, Louisiana

Monument Erected For Worst Ferry Accident In U.S. History...........

According to a news report from abc26.com..............  A monument was unveiled on Saturday morning, remembering the 95 victims and survivors of the worst ferry boat accident in U.S. history.

On October 20, 1976, the George Prince ferry was crossing the Mississippi River, where she collided with a Norwegian tanker. The ferry sank, taking 77 lives with her.

Several years ago, an effort to construct the monument was handed to St. Charles Parish councilman, Larry Cochran, who with other councilmen pushed to get the monument finished.  No public funds were used for the monument, craftsmen donated their time..............

The ferry, M/V George Prince was crossing the Mississippi River from Drestrehan, Louisiana on the East bank, to Luling, Louisiana on the West bank, when she collided with the SS Frosta, a Norwegian tanker heading up river.  The collision was less than a mile up river from the construction site of the bridge that replaced the ferry.  Less than 3 years earlier, the Prince had an accident with an up-bound tow, although, there were no fatalities.........

Missouri River Restoration

Missouri River To Get 40 Acres Of New Sandbar............

According to a news story from JamestownSun.com.............  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin the construction of 40 acres worth of sandbar on the Missouri River upstream from Yankton, South Dakota.

The sandbar habitat is used by the endangered least tern, as well as the threatened piping plover for nesting during the summer.

The Corps is required to restore habitat, since the system of dams and reservoirs eradicated sandbars that were naturally created by the unfettered Missouri River........

The Bagnell Dam Required 3,000 Workers To Construct..............

According to a news article from stltoday.com.............  When construction on the Bagnell Dam on the Osage River commenced in 1929, no one could foresee that the 60,000 acre reservoir would become a bustling summertime playground.

The Dam project had over 3,000 men on the payroll, earning 35 cents per hour.  The crew lived in company bunkhouses, and had room and board deducted from their earnings.

Bagnell Dam is 2,543 feet across, stands 148 feet over the bedrock, and required 551,000 cubic yards of concrete to build.  Total cost of the project was $30 million.

The Dam was originally constructed to provide power to a feeder station in Wellston, and to what is now called Park Hills in Missouri's old Lead Belt.  The Osage hydro powerhouse originally produced  139,000 kilowatts.  The Osage plant in it's current form produces close to 234,000 kilowatts..............

Retired Flag Ceremony Performed On The Illinois River.................

According to a news article from centralillinoisnewscenter.com..............  On Saturday, the Tazwell Military Rights Team ceremonially disposed of the ashes of 75 retired American flags.  Al Timmerman from the VFW Post 4835 presided over the ceremony.

Every year, the Tazwell Military Rights Team accepts, and disposes of worn flags, following the protocol of the U.S. flag code.

Timmerman stated that the best way dispose of the flag ashes is to distribute them over water, as he was trained not to place the ashes where they can be walked on..........
