Hey Bill

Wanted to send you a couple pictures of some of the great food we get to enjoy on the river.

Saturday night we had a shrimp boil. You can see that Todd did an excellent job of preparing our feast! It didn't take my husband or Dan long to fill their plates and enjoy.

As usual a good time was had by all.

Patty Williams

RiverBill says... Thanks for the pictures Patty.  The food looks good !  Hope we all get to meet you soon......

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day from 2007........ were from Joel.  He seen some strange looking boats on a trip to Minnesota and sent us some pictures..

Bill,

Hello, my name is Joel and these are pictures I took on my trip up to Iowa to look at a boat.

Happened to come across these and I thought you would like to see.

After talking to them they said they were from Minnesota and all were headed down to New Orleans.  There was a total of 4 boats but only saw 3.

Well here you go,  its a site to see and the last one is made out of a skate board half pipe.   I got a huge kick out of it along with the rest of my family that was with me.

River Explorer Update By Dan Owen....

Bill,

The RIVER EXPLORER fell upon hard times and the owner turned the boat and barges over to the Maritime Administration who had guaranteed the loan on them.
All three are reportedly tied up in a government reserve fleet at Beaumont, Texas. With the AMERICAN QUEEN, DELTA QUEEN and MISSISSIPPI QUEEN also tied up (the AQ and MQ are also reported to be tied up at Beaumont), there are currently no overnight passenger boats on the Mississippi River. Well, I guess you could call the NIAGARA PRINCE a passenger boat but it makes rare trips on the inland rivers.

Wednesday's Picture Of The Day & Life Jackets on Kids

I had once sent in a picture of my grandson taking charge of my houseboat and my husband was standing behind him with a beer in his hand. My husband informed me that you told him you got a lot of emails complaining about you posting the picture (because of the beer). I TOTALLY understand. But, it seems to me it is not at all safe to take a 6 day old baby for a boat ride. Can you say LIFEJACKET? I see too many kids in boats without them as it is. Not only is it a law, but what happened to COMMON SENSE and the safety of our children. We all know how river folk can get, but let's think about the kids. After all fun isn't fun if someone gets hurt.

A 12-year old fisherman, Josh Brandenburg,

They later found out that it was a vertebra from the neck of one of the largest mammoths that ever roamed the state Illinois, probably a wooly mammoth. Officials date the bone between 13,000 to 24,000 years old.

Marks on the bone suggest the creature was food for another animal or even prehistoric man.

Boat Gas News
Additive May Be Cure-All For The Ethanol Blues..............

According to a news story from motorboating.com.............. Sea Ray has announced that a fuel additive, ValvTect Ethanol Gas Treatment, may assist in preventing most ethanol-related issues, such as stalling, engine corrosion, and fuel tank problems. The product (nor any other additive) will not prevent the degradation of fiberglass fuel tanks.

ValvTevct works by preventing moisture and ethanol from settling to the bottom of the fuel tank, where it accumulates, contaminating the fuel, and then causing engine stalls.

Other suggestions to avoid fuel system issues is to keep the tanks topped up, and avoid anything that could cause moisture to enter the fuel system...............

Bill,

I've been wanting to send this picture in for a very long time.

This is a picture of our daughter Amanda and two friends enjoying the sunset from the back of our Sea Ray on a quiet weekday evening last July off Iowa island. We spend a lot of time on the river, and have lots of pictures, but this one makes us smile every time we look at it, so we wanted to share.

Missouri State Water Patrol Recovers Many Items Stolen in Fishing Tournament Theft Cases

The Missouri State Water Patrol, while investigating numerous thefts tied to fishing tournaments on Lake of the Ozarks, Table Rock Lake and Truman Reservoir, has recovered tens of thousands of dollars worth of stolen fishing equipment. Based on investigations of recent thefts, the Water Patrol served a search warrant on July 11, 2009 in Cass County at the residence of Keith A. Clark. The Water Patrol was assisted by the Cass County Sheriff's Department. Clark was taken into custody and a warrant was issued in Cass County on a felony charge for receiving stolen property.

The recovered stolen property has been linked to numerous thefts. Among those are thefts from:

  • Lake of the Ozarks, April 26 at the 8 mile mark and May 30 at the 2 mile mark of the Grand Glaize Arm

  • Table Rock Lake, April 4 and 5 near point 7 and June 25 and 26 near point 10

  • Truman Reservoir, July 9 and 10

The Water Patrol expects the property recovered to be associated with additional theft cases in Missouri and surrounding states as the investigation continues. The Water Patrol is in the process of identifying and contacting the owners of the recovered property.

Gov. Jay Nixon said, "I applaud the efforts of the Missouri State Water Patrol in this investigation. As an angler myself, I'm sure the sportsmen who'll now have their gear returned are glad to know that the Water Patrol pursued this case."

A major break in this case came as the result of a theft victim who was able to positively identify items belonging to him that were being sold in secondary markets. The secondary market for fishing tackle consists of garage sales, pawn shops, internet sales, classified ads and equipment swap meets.

During the course of this investigation numerous officers have been involved in the investigation and in processing evidence. The Missouri State Water Patrol wishes to thank the following individuals and agencies that continue to provide assistance during the investigation: Missouri State Highway Patrol Computer Forensics Unit; Sheriff Dwight Diehl and Sgt. Steve Whitmore, Cass County Sheriff's Department; Prosecutor Teresa Hensley and Assistant Prosecutor Monica Premrose, Cass County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. The discovery and arrest in this case would not have been possible without the support of these cooperating agencies. If members of other agencies or members of the public have additional information that might be associated with this investigation, please contact Sergeant Jay Pragman, Director of the Criminal Investigations Unit for the Missouri State Water Patrol.

The Water Patrol reminds fishermen and boat owners to document and record the serial numbers of electronics and other equipment stored on boats or docks. Locked storage compartments and lighting can discourage would be thieves. Owners should also mark equipment in an inconspicuous manner so that it can be identified and connected to them in case of a theft. Anytime you purchase used equipment you should have identifying information for the seller. Buyers should be suspicious of any seller who hesitates to supply contact information or items that are priced considerably below fair market value.

Anonymous crime tips may be submitted to the Water Patrol by phone or by the Departments website at: http://www.mswp.dps.mo.gov/Investigations/default

Towboat News
Recession Aside, Towboat Business Pushing Along...................

According to a news article from meridianstar.com.................... While the towboat manufacturing industry has weathered hard times before, the current recession is allowing some tow manufacturers to prosper.

Back in the early 80's, the after-effects of the bad economy, along with a Carter administration grain embargo against the Soviet Union, served to decimate the Barge shipping industry.

Those tow manufacturing companies that survived this recession were in the proverbial cat-bird's seat at the turn of the century. The tows in service were beginning to show their age, and companies were looking to replace the tows with new specimens...............

Back in the 90's Cigarette was producing 150 - 160 boats per year, and when Braver took over, production began to average about 72 boats per year. Braver states that the object is not to sell a lot of boats, but to make money on the ones you do sell..............

The steamboat era began in the city of St. Louis on July 27, 1817 when the "Zebulon M. Pike" arrived. The River Picture of the Day ..... is from Susan Bullington........

Bill,
With the wind gusting, my husband and I decided to skip the Blessing of the Fleet Saturday. Instead, we ended up at Grafton Harbor in a transient slip for the evening. I was disappointed because I really wanted to get the boat blessed this year. As it turns out, we met a great couple, Joe & Jan, who are permanent slip holders right by the slip they assigned us. We noticed that they had quite a crowd around their boat. Imagine our surprise when we discovered that Joe's brother is a priest and he was being visited by two other priests, one from Canada and the other from Rome! They kindly asked if we would like our boat blessed and I just couldn't believe it! I truly feel that it was fate that brought us to them because as soon as we were tucked safely into our slip, the winds that drove us there vanished. I guess you could say we had our own little "river miracle" this weekend!

Here are a couple more shots of a boat that passed in the front of our line of boats. I thought it looked like it may happen & it did, the dog jumped from the front of the boat and then it looked like the dog was pulling the boat. I don't know who it was in the boat but take a look at the pictures & they'll make you laugh. I guess the boat just wasn't going fast enough for the dog.

Preliminary results for June show that all fiberglass vessel sales fell off by 22.4%, whereas aluminum sales were only down by 19.6%. These figures do not include documented vessels, due to delays at the Coast Guard.

The slow-down in the decline of boat sales is a good omen, especially in a historically brisk sales month like June................

Missouri State Water Patrol
   Budget Cuts Update

According to a news report from the ozarkcountytimes.com.................... While the state looks at budget cuts to trim the Missouri State Water Patrol (MSWP) budget, a proposal to save $467,000l may remove the only Water Patrol officer from Ozark County. Actually, there are 2 officers in Ozark County, but one is the head of the MSWP dive team.

The proposed cuts would also eliminate 2 officers from the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, 2 officers from the Lake of the Ozarks, in addition to 2 from the Ninaqua River in southern Missouri.

The Department of Public Safety, which oversees the Water Patrol is quick to state that the officer eliminations are only possibilities..............

Release No. 25-09    Point of Contact: Nicole M. Dalrymple, 314-331-8068

  For Release:  IMMEDIATE - 23 July, 2009

Army Corps’ Largest Diesel Towboat traveling the Illinois River in August

St. Louis – The M/V (Motor Vessel) Mississippi, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ largest diesel towboat and flagship to the Mississippi River Commission, will be traveling 240 miles up, and then down, the Illinois River, August 4-13. The visit is part of the commission’s annual Low Water Inspection trip.

Each spring and late summer, the Mississippi River Commission conducts a series of public meetings aboard the vessel, with the late summer trip including the St. Louis area. The public meetings are held at various locations along the Mississippi River. The Commission, established by Congress in 1879, holds the meetings to maintain a  dialogue, and to exchange viewpoints and ideas with stakeholders and the public. A public meeting is scheduled at the St. Louis Riverfront, Mo., August 14 at 9 a.m.

General duties of the Mississippi River Commission include making recommendations on policy and work programs, studying and reporting on whether modifications or additions are needed for flood control and navigation projects, providing recommendations on any matters authorized by law, and making semi-annual inspection trips.

Traditionally during the Low Water Inspection trip, the commission travels the length of the Mississippi River stretching from Minnesota to New Orleans. However, in the last five years the commission has incorporated visits to the other major river basins feeding into the Mississippi.

The seven-person, Presidentially-appointed commission, comprised of three Army officers, an Admiral and three civilians, will visit the Illinois River basin to share information and learn from customers, stakeholders and interest groups about the management of the river system. The commission will be doing a systemic inspection and fact gathering trip of the Illinois River basin. The commission will make five stops in Illinois at Ottawa, Peoria, Beardstown, La Grange and Alton.

MISSISSIPPI/2-2-2

Except for two open houses being planned by the Army Corps’ Rock Island District in Peoria (Aug. 6) and Ottawa (Aug. 8), the M/V Mississippi will not be open to the public as it travels along the Illinois River. It will however be visible to residents along the river and at several riverfront communities. A tentative schedule of the boat’s movements is below but dates and times are subject to change based on river conditions and travel times.

• August 4 Grafton (Heading upstream around noon)
• August 5 Traveling between La Grange Lock and Dam and Peoria
• August 6 Open House from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. downstream of Riverplex in Peoria
• August 7 Traveling between Peoria and Ottawa
• August 8 Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Allen Park in Ottawa
• August 9 Standing by at Ottawa
• August 10 Standing by at Ottawa (departing down stream around 8:30 p.m.)
• August 11 Chillicothe Riverfront, Peoria Riverfront (standing by most of the day)
• August 12 Beardstown (morning), La Grange Lock and Dam, Meredosia, Naples
• August 13 Grafton (arrival around 9 a.m.)

The M/V Mississippi, built in 1993 by Halter Marine, is the fifth Army Corps of Engineers towboat to bear the name. It is the biggest diesel towboat in the United States at 241 feet long, 58 feet wide and five stories high. Three 2100-hp diesel engines power the vessel.

The M/V Mississippi spends more than 90 percent of its time as a working towboat, moving barges, equipment and supplies on the lower Mississippi River. The boat will be open to the public Sunday, August 2 at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam in Alton, Illinois, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information about the open house, or if special accommodations are required, contact the National Great Rivers Museum at 618-462-6979.

Bill,

We have been trying very long and hard to keep her a float; so this way we could take her down. Over night she went down. As I am a great grand-daughter to the owner I've had many memories there which once was Woodland Yacht Club private to the Woodland Marina members only then to Sharky's who was open to the public. There is going to be a lot of action these coming weeks. But I thought you wouldn't mind a few pictures from land. As I was leaving there were boats on the river taking pictures.

Little John's Motorsports Update.......

HI ALL

I apologize for not checking in, but, I had to take a deep breath and regroup.
We had a flawless trip to Augusta, good trip, no breakdowns, great weather.

I had a real hard time dialing in for great numbers in teat and tune on Friday.
On Sat. I made some drastic changes, and some FATAL mistakes.

REMEMBER, a perfect run is 9.000 A perfect reaction time is 0.000

We ended up qualifying with a 9.090
On Sunday,Ashly won her first race with a 9.001, and a reaction time of 0.013
won her second race with a 9.009, and a reaction time of 0.071
In the third race, the other driver red lighted, and that disqualified him, and we automatically won.
BUT THAT IS WHEN OUR BOMB WENT OFF
Our engine is totally gone
Due to our safety equipment, and Ashly's common sense, She and the boat are ok.

For the people out there that understand the power that we run, I will explain the fatal mistake.
In an unfamiliar altitude and density, I increased the timing, and fuel, to build power.
It worked, but we went from 9.203 to 8.88. that is to big of a spread to work with, in the time I had.
I dropped the gears to bring up power, but did not decrease the timing.
At 7400 RPM, I built a BOMB at 39 degrees timing. (as they say, don't try this at home)

I have no one to blame but myself, but that part of the adventure is OVER

THIS STORY KEEPS GETTING BETTER AN BETTER

AS I was backing in the water, after the explosion, to get Ashly on the trailer, reverse went out in our new boat limo.
We cleaned Ashly, and the boat up, before returning to the pits.
We returned to the pits, with a smile on our face, and addressed a couple of hundred very concerned people.

We kept our smile, acted as it was no big deal, went to the banquet to celebrate to celebrate our friends victories,
and had a good evening. SPEED SPORTS from St. Louis did win the Top Fuel Hydro (somewhere around 250 mph in 1/4 mile)

Monday morning, we loaded up and tried to head for home.
We made it about 100 miles and blew both brand new tires on one side of the trailer. That took about four hours.
We then started having computer problems with our brand new motorhome.
We stopped 50 or 60 times on our trip home.

We arrived home at 12.00 on Tues.
We immediately pulled the boat motor, stripped it, and loaded the parts in the truck.
We then unloaded the boat from our new hauler, and took it to MIDWEST RECYCLERS who gave us the car
Sonny Robins, and the crew from Midwest, gave us a transmission. (really tuff to argue about warranty here)
THANK YOU SONNY

We then took the motor home to SUNSET FORD for the necessary repairs.
A very special thanks to APACHE VILLAGE, and SUNSET for immediate service.

We have parts coming from all over the nation, and a lot of them are donated.

We have until Aug 1 to be on the track in Ky. Lake
REASONS WHY?

We are #1 in KDBA
We are #2 in SLDBA
We are # 1, and # 2 in two divisions of IHBA (THIS IS WHAT I AM TOLD, BUT NOT DOCUMENTED)
Ashly, and our team have worked way to hard to give up now, over my mistake.

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ALL THAT ARE TRYING TO HELP

Everything is as it can be at this moment.
Tomorrow, I have to get back to my real job until our parts get here.
WE WILL GET ER DONE

Mississippi And Illinois Rivers
Illinois' First Documented Nesting of American White Pelican

In a news story from Chicago suntimes.com............ the American White Pelican has been steadily shifted it migratory path east and has become a common site along the Illinois River valley over the past 10 years.

Now, the "first ever" nest of the bird in the state of Illinois has now been reported.   The article don't give an exact location, except for that its on an island in the Mississippi River.

Click here to read this news story. With Photos.

According to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia.....

The bird breeds in interior North America, moving south and to the coasts, up to Central America, in winter.

American White Pelicans nest in colonies of several hundred pairs on islands in remote brackish and freshwater lakes of inland North America. The most northerly nesting colony can be found on islands in the rapids of the Slave River between Fort Fitzgerald, Alberta and Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. About 10-20% of the population uses Gunnison Island in the Great Basin's Great Salt Lake as a nesting ground. The southernmost colonies are in southwestern Ontario and northeastern California.

They winter on the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico coasts from central California and Florida south to Panama, and along the Mississippi river at least as far north as St. Louis, Missouri. In winter quarters, they are rarely found on the open seashore, preferring brackish estuaries and lagoons. They cross deserts and mountains but avoid the open ocean on migration. But stray birds, often blown off course by hurricanes, have been seen in the Caribbean. In Colombian territory it has been recorded first on February 22, 1997, on the San Andrés Island, where they might have been swept by Hurricane Marco which passed nearby in November 1996. Since then, there have also been a few observations likely to pertain to this species on the South American mainland.

Wild American White Pelicans may live for more than 16 years. In captivity, the record lifespan stands at over 34 years.

There is going to be a lot of action these coming weeks. But I thought you wouldn't mind a few pictures from land. As I was leaving there were boats on the river taking pictures.

More about the Con Trios Yacht Club Luau Party

Con Trios Yacht Club Luau at Grafton Harbor, July 18th, 2009

We had a great turnout for the Luau on Saturday. Weather was a little on the coolish side so the pool toys, beach balls and water squirters, did not get much use. But, typical Con Trios party, the almost one hundred that filled the harbor with boats made it a fun day. Turned into one giant "Dock Party" on A Dock. DJ Ray played some great tunes directly from his boat poolside! How appropriate is that, we are a boating club and the disk jockey is on a boat! Joe and Jan from Grafton Harbor were wonderful hosts as always. Their staff is the most friendly and helpful you can find anywhere. Scott from Grafton's Landing kept the food going the whole time. Must have been good because there seemed to always be a line at the buffet. Many thanks to all the people that helped set up and tear down. Here are a couple of pics from the day, many more to follow as I get caught up.

Hope to see everyone at Alton Marina for the Alton Getaway on August 15th!

Originally known as Fort St. Anthony, it was constructed between 1820, and 1824. Upon the fort's completion in 1825, the name was changed to Fort Snelling, in honor of Colonel Josh Snelling. Colonel Snelling oversaw the regiment that constructed the fort, as well as the construction itself.

Located at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers, it was a forward military post tasked with protecting the territory from British and Canadian encroachment..............

Nearly 40 pages worth of comments opposing the issuance of a waiver granting permission for 15%r ethanol blended was submitted by the NMMA, to the EPA Monday. This input joins over 30,000 comments submitted by boaters, and marine industry employees.

Reader Commentary

Hey Bill,

What’s the deal with the river level dropping over the weekend? A lot of folks can’t get their boats on/off their lifts! Can’t the Corps keep the water level consistent? It’s either too high of too low. Also, how about marking all for the new and old hazards that they create?

U.S. Senator George Voinovich Declares War On Invasive Species...

According to a news article from cleveland.com................ U.S. Senator, George Voinovich, R Ohio, is embroiled in a re-enactment of the war of 1812. Only instead of fighting redcoats, he is battling invasive species migrating into Lake Erie.

Voinovich was one of the voices calling for federal funding for the Chicago River Asian carp barriers under the Great Lakes Legacy Act of 2008.

Now the Senator is going after the invasive hitchhikers lurking in the ballast water of ocean going freighters. His goal is to come up with legislation that will mandate the needed countermeasures, thus preventing invasive species from spreading into the Great Lakes.................

Small-Scale Tests Indicate Noisy Bubbles Repel Asian Carp................

According to a news story from wired.com................ An ecologist, Greg Sass, is testing methods to prevent the Asian Carp for invading Lake Michigan

The latest effort involves a high frequency noise injected into a wall of bubbles, which captures and amplifies the noise. Due to the ability of the Asian carp to hear higher frequencies, they are repelled by the sound. Native fish cannot hear this frequency, so they can pass the barrier, unfazed.

The results from testing performed in fish hatcheries is quite remarkable. The Rube Goldberg-esc acoustic fence repels 95% of the invasive species....................

The EPA had extended the comment period from May 21, to July 20th in order to allow boaters, and other marine interests to make their voices heard.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association, NMMA, and other marine industry concerns are calling for a scientific look at how higher levels will affect boats and engines.

Army Corps of Engineers to waive recreation fees August 1-9, 2009

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today it will waive all day use fees from Aug. 1-9, 2009 at its more than 2,400 Corps-operated recreation sites nationwide.

The waiver applies to day use fees collected at boat launches and swimming beach facilities. Fees for camping and camping related services and specialized facilities or special events will not be waived.

“The Corps encourages Americans of all ages to take part in outdoor recreation. Our hope is to encourage increased use during this traditionally low use period, which will help individuals and local communities economically,” said Steve Stockton, the Corps’ Director of Civil Works.

State and local agencies and private partners who manage recreation facilities on Corps lands are encouraged but not required to comply with the fee waiver.

The Corps is the nation’s largest federal provider of outdoor and water-based recreation, hosting more than 350 million visitors per year at more than 400 lakes and river projects. Many of these sites are located close to major metropolitan areas and provide 4,500 miles of trails, 90,000 campsites, and 33 percent of all U.S. freshwater fishing.

To find the nearest Corps of Engineers recreation site, please visit www.CorpsLakes.us.

According to a news report from thonline.com....................... The half mile stretch of the Mississippi River fronting McGregor, Iowa has been marked off as a no-wake zone. The no-wake rule applies to recreational water vehicles.

The zone is between mile markers 633.4 and 634. The rule also spans from the Iowa shore to Wisconsin shore.

The no-wake zone has been in place on the Iowa side of the river for many years. This was in an effort to protect 2 marinas on the McGregor riverfront. Let The Wetlands Be Wetlands !
Wetlands' Bad Reputation Eclipsed By Valuable Services Provided....

According to a news report from paughkeepsiejournal.com....................... Even though the word "wetland" brings about visions of snakes and bugs, authorities are beginning to see the valuable services wetlands provide.

Wetlands absorb flood waters, and gradually release them, they provide habit for a wide variety of wildlife, and wetlands also filter the water that flows through them.

The best way to protect wetlands is the hands-off approach: Don't add, or take away anything from the wetlands.............

"Reach, Throw, Row, Don't Go!"

Most people drown within 10 to 30 feet of safety. Learn these few simple techniques to help someone in trouble and keep yourself safe.

  • Reach: To help someone in the water, reach first with a fishing pole, towel, boat oar, but don't get in the water yourself.

  • Throw: Scan your area for items such as an empty milk jug, cooler, or ring buoys that can be thrown to someone in the water.

  • Row: It's not safe to go near a swimmer with the boat motor running. Use the oars to bring the boat close enough to reach or throw.

  • Don't Go: Without expert training and experience in lifesaving techniques, you could put yourself in danger along with the person you are trying to help.

Iowa Island Cleanup ......

We have a couple people that want to get together on a Sunday morning and bring a sawzall to cut up all the old bbq pits, tables, canopies, etc out there and hauling them back to shore. We just do not have a boat we are comfortable hauling metal in.

Looking for anyone with an old john boat or something that would be interested also so that we can haul everything in. We are open almost every Sunday. Figured early morning would be best.

Thank you in advance.

Budgetary Cutbacks May Decrease Water Patrol Officers On Duty.........

According to a news article from news-leader.com................... Missouri Governor, Jay Nixon's budget may have fewer Water Patrol officers on the water for the foreseeable future.

The proposal involves the elimination of 7 officers, in addition to not filling 4 existing vacancies. These actions alone would trim nearly $470,000 from the Missouri state budget.

Word of the cutbacks come as the Water Patrol has stepped up their efforts to promote safe boating........

July 17, 1673 in River History

Louis Joliet and Father Marquette left the mission at present day St. Ignace, Michigan on May 17, 1673 in search of a route to the Pacific Ocean by way of the Mississippi River. They traveled by the way of Green Bay, the Fox River and Wisconsin River.  They entered the Mississippi River on June 17.

The exploration party followed the Mississippi River south to about the present day location of Arkansas City, Arkansas. On July 17 they turned back after deciding that the Mississippi River would not take them to the take them to the Pacific Ocean, but instead to the Gulf of Mexico.

On the return trip they went up the Illinois River where Louis Jolliet put forth the possibility of a canal connecting Des Plaines to the Chicago River.

Missouri Department of Conservation News.................

RiverBills.om Received the following e-mail news release from Jim low of the Missouri Department of Conservation

Everything coming up roses for duck hunters … so far
Duck numbers are up overall, and nesting conditions
have been good to excellent over most of North America.

JEFFERSON CITY–Duck hunters will find much to rejoice about in the 2009 breeding duck report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS).

The report estimates North America’s total breeding duck population at 42 million. That is up 13 percent from last year and 25 percent more than the average since 1955.

The FWS estimates the mallard breeding population at 8.5 million. That is 10 percent more than last year and 13 percent above the long-term average (LTA) for the species most sought after by hunters.

The survey estimated breeding numbers of blue-winged teal at 7.4 million, 11 percent more than last year and up 60 percent from the LTA. This has special significance for the early teal season in September, whose length depends on blue-winged teal numbers. This year’s season will run for 16 days, from Sept. 12 through 27.

Estimates of other ducks’ breeding numbers were:

  • Northern pintails, 3.2 million, up 23 percent from last year but still 20 percent below the LTA.

  • Green-winged teal, 3.4 million, up 16 percent from last year and 79 percent above the LTA.

  • Gadwalls, 3.1 million, about the same as last year and up 73 percent from the LTA.

  • American wigeon, 2.5 million, about the same as last year and down 5 percent from the LTA.

  • Northern shovelers, 4.4 million, up 25 percent from last year and 92 percent above the LTA.

  • Redheads, 1 million, essentially the same as last year, but 62 percent above the LTA.

  • Scaup, 4.2 million, up 12 percent from last year but down 18 percent from the LTA.

  • Canvasbacks, 662,000, up 35 percent from last year and 16 percent above the LTA

Bill,
I took this picture last Saturday afternoon. There was a couple of jon boats with a few young couples bow hunting for asian carp near Paradice Beach. Looked like they were having a riot. I'm for making bow hunting gear mandatory on boats and a gas rebate for each carp brought to the dock with an arrow in it.
Hope the boating season has finally turned around for you all down stream.

Water Patrol Takes Steps to Promote Safety During Weekend Event at Lake of the Ozarks

The Missouri State Water Patrol will be increasing patrols and taking other steps to promote safety around the 19 mile mark at Lake of the Ozarks this Saturday, July 18 for "Aquapalooza," which is sponsored by Marine Max. Due to last year's large attendance, the event has been moved to the mouth of the Grand Glaize Arm at Dog Days Restaurant. With the increased traffic, the Water Patrol asks boaters to use extra caution while operating in the area. The No-Wake-Zone at the mouth of the Grand Glaize Arm of the lake will be in effect from 10:00 a.m. until sunset. Also on Saturday, to accommodate Aquapalooza, the Water Patrol will allow boats to anchor in the No-Wake-Zone north of the Highway 54 Bridge. The Water Patrol will monitor anchored boats to ensure that navigation remains open in the area. The Missouri State Water Patrol asks that boaters be patient and make every attempt to reduce the wake output from their boats while traveling to and from the event.

War of 812

PORTAGE DE SIOUX BLOCKHOUSE AND FORT LOOKOUT (MO)
On April 8, 1813, General Daniel Bissell of Fort Bellefontaine and territorial governor Benjamin Howard chose Portage de Sioux, Missouri to build a military post. Captain Desha with a subaltern and fifty-one men were instructed to build a blockhouse at Portage de Sioux. To protect the builders, a large fortified gunboat was left in the river near the blockhouse. To further watch and protect St. Louis, it was decided to place a battery of artillery on a island in the middle of the river just south of the village of Portage de Sioux. This battery was called Fort Lookout.
On July 15, 1815, a treaty was signed with the Indians near the blockhouse thus more or less ending the Indian attacks on the settlements.

More Homes In St. Charles Have Been Mapped Into Flood Plain........

According to a news story in the STLtoday......... The Federal Emergency Management Agency has revised the Flood Insurance Rate Maps for St. Charles County.  These show areas of the county that are likely to be flooded in a 100-year flood.  The new flood maps show that the floodplain of the Mississippi River is "receding" while the floodplain of the Missouri River is "expanding."

As a result , there thousands of properties that are located near the rivers and creeks in the city of St. Charles and unincorporated parts of St. Charles County that are now in the floodplain, many for the first time.

Residents who own property in a floodplain and have a federally backed mortgage on their property must purchase flood insurance.

Water Safety on the River

   Reach, Throw, Don't Go.......

ConnectTristates.com published an article in last Friday's edition titled .... "Water Safety on the River."

Boating and swimming on the river is different that on a lake.  The river currents are always changing the river channel and all other areas of the river.  An area that is shallow one week may be deep the following week based on how the river currents have moved the sand and earth in the river.

The currents in the river can even pull good swimmers under the water.  Watch your small children, be aware of your surrondings and if something does go wrong ........"The most important thing is to remember the "Reach, Throw Don't Go" rule.

Yesteryear's River Picture of Day from 2006------   is of the Flying Carp Attack.  On the way back from Capt'n Jack's last night we had a beautiful sunset and a peaceful ride until we got near Slim Island.....Then..... Just about dark....... the flying carp started to jump as the "perrrrrr" of motor on the Redneck Woman spooked them. ...Hundreds of them !    They jumped all around us for the whole length of Slim Island and beyond. Some jumped just a bit above the water and some jumped 6 or more feet into the air.  About 8 or 9 of them jumped over the rail on the Portage Skiff and landed inside boat....now you can bet that caused some excitement.   Quite a few could be heard hitting hard on the steel hull (thud..) as they jumped aimlessly into the air.  One jumped so high it almost landed on top of the roof of the aft cabin of The Redneck Woman.  If you didn't know it...the fish usually hurt themselves when the hit the boat, they start bleeding and flop around spreading blood and guts everywhere.

To top it all off..... we pulled Bob's Jon Boat behind the Red Neck Woman as we motored home .....He landed 5 of the flying carp without even being in the boat !

History of the Blessing of the Fleet.......

HISTORY OF THE BLESSING OF THE FLEET, INC. We are proud to announce that The Blessing of the Fleet, Inc., an organization whose purpose is to promote safe boating, will be celebrating their 52nd Anniversary on Saturday, July 18, 2009.

The Blessing of the Fleet, Inc. is responsible for organizing an annual event on the river rich in tradition, The Blessing of the Fleet and Parade of Boats. This event is held on a mid-summer afternoon in July on the Mississippi River between Mel Price Lock and Dam in Alton, Illinois and the Winfield Lock and Dam, Missouri.

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rivers in Portage des Sioux is the actual site of the ceremony and gets her name from the fact that three major rivers - the Illinois, the Missouri and the Mississippi - all meet within a few miles of the statue. The first pleasure Boat Blessing materialized as a result of a flood that threatened Portage des Sioux in the early 1950’s. The towns’ parish, headed by Rev. Edward Schlattmann, prayed together to the Virgin Mary for the town of Portage des Sioux to be spared from the perils of the raising waters. They together coined a name for the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Rivers. As history records, the flooding waters parted and traveled just above and below the river town without entering it. To pay tribute to their Lady, the town people and parishioners, Schlattmann and local businessmen and local boatmen formulated plans for the first religious fiberglass statue.

Eventually the 25’ Statue of Our Lady of the Rivers and a 25’ Base were erected at the site of Portage des Sioux. It remains today as the fourth tallest statue of Mary in the world. Over the years it has served as a navigation aid for the area and the podium from which the annual Blessing of the Fleet takes place. As each vessel approaches the base of the Shrine and slows to idle speed a blessing is bestowed as they pass imploring heaven to protect and bless them in these waters. This tradition has proven to be the highlight of the areas boating season and each year attracts hundreds of participating decorated pleasure craft, as well as, spectators to the area. Together they display an exquisitely executed celebration of the season, exhibiting a long inspired passion for boating and relating knowledge of history.

Participants compete for awards in specific categories by decorating to a designated theme for each year and are invited to gather following the parade and blessing for a fun and festive awards ceremony held at a local area marina.

The Blessing of the Fleet works in conjunction with area marinas, harbors, various related area businesses, as well as civic and local organizations and has the cooperation of the City of St. Louis Fire Department-Marine Division, The City of St. Charles, Mo., U.S. Coast Guard and U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the U.S. Power Squadron, Missouri Water Patrol, and Our Lady of the Rivers Shrine Committee of Portage des Sioux, Mo.

The Blessing of the Fleet, Inc. has been fortunate to have had exceptional leaders serve in the office of President. Mr. William Timothy Tighe holds this office currently, as the organizations fifth President. He has been an active and respected member of the Blessing of the Fleet for more than ten years and is an experienced, educated and skilled yachtsman. President Tighe is dedicated to maintaining the success of the organization and to continuing this meaningful tradition for all boating enthusiast and their families to enjoy.

To all past and present officers and committee members of the Blessing of the Fleet, Inc. who have dedicated their time and talents over the past fifty years to preserve and maintain this tradition, we are honored to congratulate you on achieving this 52nd Anniversary. To generations yet unborn, The Shrine and this Annual Tradition will together serve as a symbol of our generations appreciation of the nautical sensibility and natural beauty of this area where three rivers meet near the site of the Statue of Our Lady of the Rivers, Portage des Sioux.

Congratulations Blessing of the Fleet, Inc. on these Accomplishments.

The Red Buoy was found by us a few years ago (Oct 2003) and we " Planted it" in the Sand but the High water washed it away. We found it again last weekend and we "planted it" AGAIN!! This time we signed the Buoy with are Boat names. Hope she makes it thru Jamaica Daze 2006 and the High waters!!

Navigation Notices ......

To: ALL MARINERS
From: MSO St. Louis
Date: 7/2/09
Subject: Marine Safety Information Bulletin
NAVNOTICE # 1760

The City of St. Louis, MO will be hosting the 2009 Major League Baseball All Star Game which includes a week of activities around the city. Some of these activities will take place adjacent to or near the Mississippi River. In an effort to ensure the safety and security of event attendees, maritime industry, and the infrastructure surrounding the city during the celebration, USCG Sector Upper Mississippi River (UMR) will be establishing a Safety Zone along the Mississippi River near the City of St. Louis.

The Safety Zone will be in effect from 11 July 2009 through 14 July 2009 during the hours of 4:00 p.m. till 12:00 a.m. each evening. During these times the Safety Zone boundaries will be established between the MacArthur Railroad Bridge, Mile Marker (MM) 179, and the Eads Bridge, MM 180. All mariners are required to report in to the USCG Sector UMR Command Center via marine radio, VHF channel 16, or by phone at 314-269-2332 for guidance prior to entering the Safety Zone. Up-Bound traffic shall report nearing the Safety Zone upon reaching the Jefferson Barracks Bridge, MM 168.6, and Down-Bound traffic shall report nearing the Safety Zone upon reaching Lock and Dam 27 (Chain of Rocks), MM 185.5. Commercial vessels are to report tow configuration and confirm Certain Dangerous Cargos (CDC) and Extremely Hazardous Cargos (EHC) if applicable. USCG Sector UMR response boats will be present in the Safety Zone during the enforcement hours and will screen both commercial and recreational traffic before allowing passage of the zone. Detailed control measures are as follows:
• EHC & CDC cargos will not be allowed to transit the zone from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., on 11 July 2009 due to waterfront activities.
• NO recreational or commercial traffic will be allowed to transit the Safety Zone from 10:00 p.m. till 11:00 p.m. due to the presence of fireworks.

Companies are encouraged to be proactive in offsetting transit times to avoid possible delays during Safety Zone enforcement, especially during the evening of 11 July.

Missouri River 340

   Missouri Department of Conservation News....

RiverBill's received the following e-mail news release from Jim Low of the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Paddling ultra-marathon entries redouble
The time allowed for completion of this year’s
Missouri River 340 has been shaved by 12 hours.

KANSAS CITY–Twice as many paddlers will take part in the 2009 Missouri River 340 as last year, and they will have less than four days to complete the punishing paddle from Kansas City to St. Louis.

When it began in 2006, the race drew just 15 entries. The second year it attracted 76. Concerned about their ability to conduct the event safely, organizers limited last year’s entries to 150. This year they raised the limit to 300. With nearly a month left before the race, 285 solo paddlers or teams have registered.

“Interest in this race is simply phenomenal,” said Scott Mansker, one of the race’s creators. “I have no idea how many racers we might have if we didn’t limit the number, but every time we double it, the roster fills up.”

Eighty percent of entries are men – 106 in the solo division plus 122 men’s tandem teams. The Mixed Tandem Division is the next-largest, with 22 entries, followed by the Women’s Solo Division with 19. The Team Division has nine entries with three or more paddlers each. Five women’s tandem teams have signed up. The smallest division, with just two entries, is for pedal-drive canoes and kayaks.

The more than 450 contestants come from 27 states, plus Ontario, Canada. That is some indication of the prestige the Missouri River 340 has achieved in four years.

First to cross the line in 2008 was Team Texas, a six-man powerhouse that skimmed across the state in a mere 36 hours, 19 minutes, averaging 9.4 miles per hour. This phenomenal pace, plus the need to prevent the racing pack from getting too strung out, prompted organizers to shave 12 hours off the time allowed to complete the race.

“We have certain time allowances for paddlers to reach checkpoints along the way,” said Mansker. “Those who don’t make the deadlines are dropped from the race. They can still complete the course, but they are no longer part of the Missouri River 340. Otherwise, we could have folks strung out from Lexington to Hermann, and we wouldn’t have enough safety boats to cover everyone.”

Faced with running a race for 300 boats, organizers reduced the time allotted from 100 hours to 88 this year. This pushes up each of the checkpoint deadlines enough to keep the racing pack reasonably compact for safety purposes.

Texan West Hansen won the first Missouri River 340 with a time of 53 hours, 40 minutes. He was in the tandem team that won the second race with a time of 44 hours, 27 minutes. Last year he was part of the winning six-man team.

This year, three-time winner Hansen will paddle in the Mixed Tandem Division with last year’s women’s solo champ. Iowan Katie Pfefferkorn’s time last year was exactly 50 hours. That was, down from the 98 hours, 36 minutes it took her to complete her first race in 2006.

“Pfefferkorn-Hansen is an apocalyptic pairing,” said Mansker. “I've gone on a couple training runs with them. They are serious. And it will be so interesting to watch the Women's Solo Division this year. Erin Magee (2007 women’s solo winner) will not be competing this year, so the women’s solo championship is up for grabs.”

Everything – even naming your entry – becomes a contest among such competitive athletes. This years’ roster includes the “Kayakkity Yaks,” “Carp Target Grannies,” “Death Row,” “Aquaholics” and “Cirrhosis of the River.”

Spectators can watch the spectacle of “Rub-A-Dub-Dub (Three Men in a Tub),” “Hicks with Sticks” and other contestants vying for the 2009 Missouri River 340 title. The race starts at 8 a.m. Aug. 4 at Kaw Point, near the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas Rivers in Kansas City. It winds up at midnight Aug. 7 at Riverfront Park in St. Charles. Checkpoints and river accesses between these two points also provide convenient race-watching spots.

Illinois River
Work Starts on Deepening / Island Project At Peoria, IL ...............

According to a news story in the examiner.com................. Work has started on deepen the Illinois River and build islands at the river city of Peoria, Illinois.

The US Army Corps of Engineers will use the dredged river mud to build three islands.

The goal of the project is to deepen the river in that area and create a better environment for wildlife. The Illinois river has been "silting in" in that area for decades.

Work has been delayed until now because of the river's high water levels. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.
