Missouri River Association of States and Tribes.......

According to a news report in the SIOUX CITY Journal.com.....MoRAST plan to meet next week in Rapid City, Iowa.  During the meeting....they are planning to refine it's approach to the planned study of the World War II-era law authorizing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to operate the Missouri River.

MoRAST voted to request a re-evaluation of the 1944 Flood Control Act last February and now plan to further discuss the study.  They will attempt to put more meaning in to the nature of the study that is being requested.

The upstream states want to study how the activities along the river have changesd over the last 64 years.....

States on the upper end of the Missouri River, in general, want steady or rising water levels in the spring of the year when fish are spawning. The states on the lower end of the Missouri River are mindful of flood control, but need a dependable flow of water for commerical navigation and...... for municipal and commercial water use.

Abandoned Boats Becoming More Common ...........

According to a news story on boston.com..... abandoned boats are becoming a problem all across the United States.

Marina owners and other officials are reporting an increase in the number of pleasure craft and commercial vessels that are being abandoned.  They are being abandoned because of our floundering economy.  Some consider boats as a barometer of consumer confidence, because they are purchased with disposable income.

Wood and fiberglass boats have very little scrap value, so many owners are ditching them rather than paying to have them hauled off......  The boats often break up and go under, or pass into the underground economy of nighttime scuttlers - who, for a fee, remove traceable identification numbers, strip out salvageable items and sink the vessels.

Oil, gasoline and sewage from a lot of these abandoned boats leak out into the aquatic environment.  The paint used on boats often contains mercury, chromium, lead as well as other toxic chemicals.  This paint flakes off as the boats deteriorate and fish end up swallowing it.

Disconnecting The Great Lakes From The Illinois River......

A news story in the Northwest Herald has an update on separating the Great Lakes from the Illinois River.

The Great Lakes were connected to the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers in the early 1900s by a a man-made waterway in the Chicago area.  They also reversed the flow of the Chicago River into the Illinois River so as to stop polluting their lake front with sewage.

Now with the invasion of aquatic species such as the zebra mussel, Asian carp and round goby...... policymakers and environmental groups are re-thinking this system of man made waterways.....

Among the possibilities to stop the invasions are: a concrete wall, heating or chemically treating the water, or even restoring the Chicago River's natural flow.

Missouri Department of Conservation Calendar.........

   RiverBill's received the following e-mail from Jim Low of the Missouri Department of Conservation

~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~
Vintage outdoor gear fills pages of calendar for hunters, anglers (w/pic)
This companion to the Conservation Department’s popular Natural
Events Calendar caters to those who pursue traditional outdoor activities.
JEFFERSON CITY—Split-bamboo fishing rods, vintage shotguns and the beaming faces of successful hunters and anglers mark the passage of seasons in the 2009 Missouri’s Outdoor Heritage Calendar from the Missouri Department of Conservation.
The first-ever calendar is a companion piece to the Conservation Department’s popular Natural Events Calendar, which has been published since 1986.
“Knowing how popular the Natural Events Calendar is, we think that hunters, trappers and anglers will enjoy having a calendar that focuses on their interests,” said Outreach Programs Chief Eric Kurzejeski. “The visual subject matter is long on nostalgia and making family memories.”
Images of modern hunting, fishing and trapping are interspersed with stunning wildlife photography and photos of antique equipment and scenes of outdoor activities from yesteryear.
Like the Natural Events Calendar, the Outdoor Heritage Calendar has day-to-day entries that mark the progression of the sporting year. January’s entries include the final portion of the youth firearms deer season, advice about turning Christmas trees into fish habitat and a reminder about winter stonefly hatches that create trout-fishing opportunities. Daily notes for August mention whitetail bucks rubbing velvet off their antlers, and October’s entries include a note that smallmouth bass are moving into deep holes for the winter in Ozark streams.
The Outdoor Heritage Calendar is available at conservation nature centers and regional offices statewide. You also can buy copies by calling toll-free (877) 521-8632 or through The Nature Shop, www.mdcnatureshop.com. The price is $7 per copy, plus shipping and handling and sales tax where applicable.
Our Picture of The Day.......  was sent in by Capt'n Greg Moore, who hails out of Grafton Harbor in the boat "Gettin'By V"
Bill,
I failed to mention, thank you, for using one of my photos of the colors for your heading! Even though the leaves were not that brilliant in that picture, the white bluffs with the morning sun on the bluffs and the foliage Vs the sky and the water make that a very good picture. I am hoping that Karen got some like that with her camera last Saturday. I was taking the pictures I already sent you, while piloting the boat. Karen was taking the pictures while riding as I was also attempting to position her for better shots. Will send some of them to you once I get them downloaded.
Still looking forward to meeting you!
After all of my years of boating on the rivers, this was a bad year, to be our first year, to keep our boat, Gettin’By V, on the river! But, as we already knew, the people on the river, in Grafton and the surrounding areas, as well as at Grafton Harbor are the best!
We all look forward to a better season for boating next year!
Quincy's River Museum.........
Community leaders in Quincy, Illinois are trying to bring a river museum to their riverfront.
The idea started back in 1990 with a plan to make Quincy's riverfront a focal point for the city. Some projects have already been completed.... the Clat Adams Park and the Art Keller Marina.
Another part of their plan is to build a star river museum on the riverfront that would include river cultural issues, navigation, flood control/agricultural productivity, energy from the river, environmental issues and water quality. There are also plans for a river aquarium, river habitat and native animal zoo.
From the Missouri Department of Conservation........ RiverBill's received the following e-mail from Jim Low of the Missouri Department of Conservation
Venison recipes available online
The Conservation Department has help for
hunters looking for creative ways to prepare venison.
JEFFERSON CITY–It’s deer-hunting season in Missouri , and that means that millions of pounds of venison are headed for tables. The Missouri Department of Conservation has tips for making venison dishes tender and tasty.
     Like most other wild game, venison is leaner than beef or other domestic meats. The lack of internal fat can result in dry, tough dishes unless venison is cooked with two things in mind – don’t overcook venison, and use moist heat when possible.
     Venison steaks, roasts and burgers can turn dry and tough if grilled over charcoal or roasted uncovered in an oven. To avoid drying out steaks on the grill, cook them quickly over high heat to sear the surface and lock in moisture, and baste liberally.
      To keep venison burgers moist, combine ground venison with ground pork or other fatty meat or add chopped onions, bell peppers, garlic, parsley and other moisture-boosting ingredients. You can use straight ground venison in stew or chili with great results.
     Another way to incorporate moisture into cooking whole cuts of venison is to use a crock pot or Dutch oven. Swiss steak is a particularly good recipe for venison steak because it combines moist heat and the natural tenderizing action of the acid in tomatoes.
     To tenderize tough venison and reduce gamey taste, try soaking it in white vinegar for an hour, drain and soak again before cooking.
     The Conservation Department’s Web site has dozens of wild-game recipes, including many for venison, at mdc4.mdc.mo.gov/tv/nowwerecookin.asp. Following are three of those recipes.
VENISON TERIYAKI
INGREDIENTS: 1 to 2 pounds of venison steak, 1/3 cup soy sauce, 1 Tbsp. brown sugar, 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil, ½ tsp. ground black pepper, ½ tsp. ground ginger, ½ tsp. garlic powder.
PREPARATION: Combine all ingredients and marinate overnight (if possible). Cook on a hot grill or over an open fire, basting occasionally with reserved marinade. Cook until meat is slightly charred outside, but still pink inside. Do NOT overcook. Serve with a rice dish.
PHILLY STEAK SANDWICHES
INGREDIENTS: 2 lbs. frozen venison round steak, milk or salt water, flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, 1 medium onion, sliced thin and ringed, 1 loaf of French bread, butter or margarine, shredded cheddar or pepper jack or sliced Swiss cheese.
PREPARATION: Thaw meat until it begins to soften but still has ice crystals. This makes it easy to cut into wafer-thin slices. Soak overnight in milk or salt water if necessary to remove gamey taste.
     Season meat with salt and pepper. Dredge in flour and brown in a skillet over medium heat, using a small amount of oil. Add ½ cup of water, cover with onion rings and simmer until meat is tender. Slice bread lengthwise and spread butter or margarine on both sides. Sprinkle with garlic powder. Cover lower half of loaf with venison, then top with onions and cheese. Put top of loaf on to and wrap in foil.
     Bake at 300 degrees until top of bread is crisp. Cut into individual servings and top with pickle, peppers, tomatoes, etc.
VENISON DOG BISCUITS
Hunters who bring home trophy antlers sometimes find the culinary fruits of their labor problematic. The meat from large, old bucks can be tough and strong-tasting, but ethical hunters are obliged to consume what they kill. One way to deal with this dilemma is to turn less-than-tasty venison into treats that will delight four-legged family members and save you money on dog treats throughout the year. Try this recipe for venison dog biscuits.
INGREDIENTS: 1 cup whole-wheat flour, 1 cup cornmeal, ½ cup wheat germ, ½ cup cooked ground venison, ½ cup vegetable oil, 1 egg, ½ cup beef broth, ½ tsp. salt.
PREPARATION: Mix the dry ingredients and add them to the wet ingredients. Roll the mixture out to about .5 inch thick. Cut into appropriate shapes with cookie cutters and bake at 350 to 400 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes, or until crisp. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer.
 Hi Bill,
I wanted to send you a few pics that were taken yesterday, Nov. 24. The skiing pics were taken in Snake Chute, and the boat pic was taken down at the Grafton marina. Pictured are my son Zac and our friend Caroline. They braved the 44 degree water yesterday for a ski run or two. Susie skiied a quick run as well, but no pictures of her!
Went to Grafton for some hot chocolate afterwards.
Another day on the river!
The Delta Queen's Future............
According to a news story on Cincinnati.com ...the future of the Delta Queen is still uncertain.
The river city of Covington, Kentucky, located on the Ohio River across from Cincinnati, Ohio.....hopes to be in the Delta Queen's future.
American West Steamboat Co. is looking for someone to lease the 81-year-old Delta Queen.  They have contacted the city of Covington, Kentucky and other parties who have expressed interest in riverboat, looking for proposals.
The city of Covington and Northern Kentucky officials are interested in having the Delta Queen moored in Covington as a tourist attraction with no lease cost to the owner.   They do not feel that they are in a position to lease the riverboat and operate it.
They are trying to organizing a group of private business's to lease and operate the Delta Queen as a hotel-restaurant.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
The Coast Guard Auxiliary Doesn't Hibernate in Winter!
Whether on the water or ashore, whether during the summertime boating season or in the midst of the cold weather boat-storage season, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary is always actively performing its missions in Boating Safety, Environmental Protection, Public Education, and even assisting the Active Duty with all manner of missions not involving direct law enforcement or military activity.
“We are always looking for a few good men and women” said Anthony Turner, national spokesperson for the Coast Guard Auxiliary. “In addition to our traditional recreational boating safety missions that we have always performed, such as boating safety classes and free vessel safety checks, we also perform a variety of other missions for and alongside Active Duty Coast Guard units.”
You may have seen members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary serving as patrol coxswains and crew out on the water. Auxiliarists also serve as class instructors, vessel examiners, interpreters, health care providers, webmasters, public affairs officers, photographers, and much more. During the winter, the Auxiliary's Public Affairs people prepare for National Safe Boating Week and the Boat Show season. Auxiliary trainers conduct Boating Safety Classes. With appropriate training and qualification, Auxiliarists can supplement active duty personnel as watch-standers, on Coast Guard bases and even serve on board Coast Guard Cutters, and more.
In addition to the Public Education classes the Auxiliary offers to the public, there is a robust Member Training program which allows Auxiliarists to pursue advanced training and acquire expertise in their areas of interest. Much of the advanced training is the same as that provided to the Active Duty.
Perhaps you have an interest in volunteering. Whether you simply seek to become a better boater thru training, or desire to pursue an advanced specialty, there's a place for you. Whether you are interested in direct operations or a support role, there is a place for you. Fellowship and camaraderie are as important as training and service.
To learn more about boater education, Vessel Safety Checks and other services provided by the Coast Guard Auxiliary – or if you are interested in learning how to become one of us – please visit us online at www.uscgauxflotilla3-13.org or contact us at bcz@charter.net.
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteer civilians who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation’s waterways, in classrooms and on the dock, performing safety patrols, vessel safety examinations and public education. The 28,000 members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary donate millions of hours annually in support of Coast Guard missions.
New Signs For The Illinois River Road National Scenic Byway.............
According to a news story on the pjstar.com, Illinois officials unveiled the new signs for the Illinois River Road National Scenic Byway this past Monday.
There will be nearly 200 of the new signs placed along the roads
between Ottawa and Havana.  They should make the roadways, trails and parks along the river more visible.
"The new signs feature the byway's recently revamped logo: a bright yellow sun behind a subtle wave and a pair of soaring birds on a sky-blue background."
"Byway Board of Directors Chairman Mike Quine said the signs depict the Illinois River in an "impressionistic sort of way" and will help both locals and outsiders find nature destinations along the river's banks."
Seven State Parks In Illinois to Close............
 According to a news article, dated Nov.22,  in the Prairie States Outdoors website seven state parks in Illinois will close next weekend, even though the state's Governor and lawmakers have approved money need to keep them open.
Govenor Rod Blagojevich originally had targeted 11 state parks for closure on Nov. 30, but lawmakers approved $230 million to stop the parks from closing.
Four of the parks will stay open: Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park, Channahon Parkway State Park, Gebhard Woods State Park and
Kickapoo State Park .
"Those parks were spared because they were in each of the three Department of Natural Resources regions affected by closures, three of them were connected to trails and Kickapoo offered several forms of recreation."
Joe Mansheim is known around many construction sites as the "duck man" and everyone smile when they see the two of them in the truck.
Joe explained that it all started about a year ago whenhe paid  $700 on a duck hunting dog, that wouldn't hunt.....Hah !   His boss told him that he should have skipped the hunting dog thing and just bought a duck.
The rest is history..........
Little John's Motorsports Update.............
Here's the update from Sunday, November 23rd:
Well, we have good news and bad news.
Ashly Ruf is one of two licensed female PRO drivers in the WORLD.
She did not break 180 MPH, but did go over 150 MPH.
The pass was GREAT very smooth and steady.
The speed and ET of 7.52 was way more than needed to get her license.
The bad news is that Ashly ran a 10.003 in her first pass after qualifying third in the whole field
BUT RED LIT BY .001 and we were done.
Almost all night was spent helping another racer rebuild their engine for today.
We will be running in the second chance race today, but it will not count in our points.
We are still pouting, but being second in the nation is something we need to be proud of.
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU AT HOME.
The attached picture is of some one that was not as fortunate.
It is what is left of a boat that lost control at over 200 MPH.
The driver survived due to his equipment, and the fast response of the rescue team.
I will let you know how we do today.
Tomorrow we leave from here for Fort Sill Oklahoma for Terrie's son Josh's graduation from
Army Boot Camp.
We will have Thanksgiving there and be home for the weekend.
I think that every one that reads this should call the crew at Big Muddy and tell them that Dan
should plan a victory party.
That way we can personally thank everybody for all they have done to help us.
Little John
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas - In this photo by the U.S. Coast Guard, Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Schiltz works with contractors from Global Mari Tek to repair a 33-foot response boat at Station South Padre Island, on Friday, November 21, 2008.
The 33-foot boat is being fitted with a new bra, which protects the bow of the boat from dents. When the bra is damaged it splits at the seam and exposes the foam on the bow, said Schiltz. This piece costs approximately $1,000 to replace, he said.
The temperature on Friday dipped into the mid-50s, making the process of replacing the bra difficult, said Schiltz.
"Stretching it to fit is the hardest part. First you have to get it warmed up using a heating tool so it will stretch. Right now with this colder weather the material has a tendency to shrink," said Schiltz.
For the River Deer Hunters............
 The Prairie States Outdoors website has an article on a possible world record deer.
The buck has been scored at 319 inches and that would it the "largest ever taken by a hunter."    The current record, a 307 5/8 buck, belongs to Tony Lovstuen of Monroe, Iowa.
The overall world record is from St. Louis County, Missouri in 1981. That
non-typical buck scored 333 7/8 inches.
A Bit of River History
When did the Corps' involvement in river and harbor improvements begin?......
The 1824 General Survey Act authorized the President to have the Corps survey, plan, and submit estimates for routes "of such roads and canals as he may deem of national importance, in a commercial or military point of view, or necessary for the transportation of public mail." It also appropriated $30,000 to establish a Board of Engineers for Internal Improvements to help carry out the surveys prior to the passage of this act. There is little question that the legislation was instrumental in establishing the important role of the Corps in planning ferderal civil works projects. However, it was not until a few weeks later that the Corps received specific responsibilities for undertaking river improvements. An act "to improve the navigation of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers," passed on 24 May 1824, authorized the President (using Army Engineers) to remove snags on the two rivers and to conduct experiments to find ways to eliminate sand bars. To carry out the act's provisions, Congress appropriated $75,000.
Our Pictures of The Day....... are from Rick and Mary Estes, who hail out of lake Center Marina in the cruiser, Y2 Katy II.
Hey, Bill,
These pics are from Sunday, November 16. It was time to call it a season (or was it past time?). So we took the Y2Katy II out to fill up the fuel tanks and pump out before it really got cold, then back to the harbor for the winterization process. We stopped at Port Charles where the very gracious Sherri helped us fuel up and pump out. She was very helpful and a lot of fun. While there we ran into one of our Two Branch slough buddies Rich V. of the houseboat "We Did It II" and "father" of riverdawg Winston. That's Rich on the port side on our swim platform. So now we have a full load of fuel, and I'm thinking, we can't just go straight back to the dock. Let's take a short ride and stop for one last lunch at Grafton Landing. We did, and it was great, plus it extended our last day of boating (who cares if we ended up winterizing in the dark).
That's Mary with the restaurant in the background.
Bill, Keep up the good work.
See ya on the river (next year),
Rick, Mary & Katy
St. Charles Riverfront Development .......
According to a news story in the the St. Louis Business Journal.... The St. Charles City Council approved a plan in May of 2004 for developing the eight miles of St. Charles riverfront.
Little progress has been made to date because the plan has faced much opposition from those looking to protect the historic nature of the St. Charles riverfront.
St. Charles paid a Kansas City consulting firm to prepare the development plan for the riverfront area that stretches from Hawning Road on the north, Page Avenue to the south, Main Street to the west and the Missouri River to the east. The development plan calls for six villages to be built along the river.....
According to the plan, each village would be built upon the already established assets of the area: the river, existing centers of activity, transportation, the natural environment and opportunities for redevelopment.
One business owner and member of the South Main Street Preservation Society is opposed to any new development that would block people's view of the river or change the 19th-century feel of Main Street.
    Leaking Barges Could Be Source of Ozone Causing Organic Compounds.......
According to a news story in the the 2theadvocate.com..... The barges on the Mississippi River could be a major source of ozone-causing volatile organic compounds.
According to the news article there could be as much as 500 tons of volatile organic compounds being released each day by river barges.
 By comparison, the ExxonMobil Refining plant in Baton Rouge released a total of 1,544 tons of VOCs for the entire year of 2007.
During recent tests an infrared camera was used that shows the VOC leaks as black smoke. Bags were placed over the leaking areas and then hooked up to a device to measure how much VOC was coming out of the leaky barges.
They never found a barge with one or two leaks...the least number of leaks was a dozen.  Anything on a barge that could be opened and closed was leaking.
Swing Bridge Across Mississippi River Falls .......
According to a news article on TwinCities.com ...... A 200-foot section of the old swing bridge that crosses the Mississippi River between St. Paul Park, Minnesota and Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota has fallen under its own weight onto the banks of the Mississippi River.
The double-decker bridge was constructed in 1895.  It was closed to automobile traffic in 1999 and the U.S. Coast Guard ordered it removed in 2001 because of possible disruptions to river traffic.
Preservation groups have been trying to save the old bridge and Washington County officials have been trying tear it down.
Floating River Condos ......
According to a news article in the Muscatine Journal .....a St. Paul Minnesota man, Dave Nelson, has a plan for a floating condominium community.  He has named it the ....Marquette.
It would be the biggest river craft in the world.  The barge would be 600 feet long, 108 feet wide and house 250 people.   It would "just fit"  in most locks on the Mississippi River
The Marquette would be based out of Houston, Texas and would cruise the Mississippi River and its tributaries year-round.
Construction is scheduled to start this winter and be completed in 2010
Once the Marquette becomes operational it will cruise through 21 states stretching  from Pittsburgh, Pa., to St. Paul, Minn., to the Gulf of Mexico at a big price.....a two-month a year package will be $55,000 and year-round residency is $1.8 million.
The floating condos will have two restaurants on board, two lounges, a deli, a grocery store, theaters, swimming pools, and much more.   There will be a fleet of buses, automobiles, mopeds and bicycles available for condo residents once on dry land.
Stunning landscapes, intimate wildlife
portraits fill pages of 2009 Natural Events Calendar
Get your guide to a natural year for $7 at
conservation nature centers, by phone or online.
JEFFERSON CITY—The 2009 Natural Events Calendar is on sale now statewide.
The calendar, produced by the Missouri Department of Conservation, is on sale at conservation nature centers and regional offices statewide. You also can buy copies by calling toll-free 877-521-8632 or through The Nature Shop, www.mdcnatureshop.com. The price is $7 per copy, plus shipping and handling and sales tax where applicable.
The 2009 calendar has dozens of color photos of wild plants and animals and Missouri landscapes. Some were taken by Conservation Department photographers Noppadol Paothong and David Stonner. Many came from other conservation employees or volunteers.
Photographic highlights of the 2009 calendar include a stunningly eerie winter landscape of water tupelo trees in fog, a brilliant detail of fall leaves, a springtime portrait of 132-foot Mina Sauk Falls and wildlife portraits of everything from baby foxes to a pelican.
As always, calendar owners will get glimpses of natural life in Missouri through daily entries about such diverse events as bobcats mating, morels popping and meteors showering.
Special features of the 2009 calendar include a section on blooming times of native landscape plants and an invitation to join the Missouri Master Naturalists.
Yester Year's River Picture of the Day 2006-----   was of a logging company barging cut timber across the main channel of the Mississippi from Two Branch Island to the Missouri side of the river where they are stacked on the bank,  loaded on trucks and hauled away.
  The tow in the picture came to an almost complete stop as it waited for the logging barge and tug to cross the channel and get to it's destination just below Two Branch Marina..  Then the tow just seemed to float past ....as not to make any waves for the loggers.
Lt. Robert E. Lee Riverboat Up For Auction......
According to a news story in the STLtoday.com.... The Lt. Robert E. Lee riverboat, is scheduled to be auctioned to the highest bidder in mid December.
The riverboat, that failed as a restaurant in Kimmswick, Mo has no engine and is located in a secure storage facility on the Mississippi River south of downtown St. Louis.   The boat was towed to it's present location after it's owner failed to make a profit from the riverboat restaurant.
The Robert E. Lee was built in 1969 to look like a riverboat of the 19th-century.  It was a popular floating restaurant and nightclub on the St. Louis Riverfront for decades.....
The Sequoia, The White House on the Water.....
The on-line Power and Motoryacht Magazine ahs an interesting article on the Sequoia.
The article starts of with the following words in the title.......
Presidents come and go but Sequoia is forever.
She was built In 1933 and named the "presidential vessel" by President Herbert Hoovert. The yacht was first owned by the wealthy Cadwalader family, then sold to Texas oil tycoon William F. Dunning in 1928. The U.S. Department of Commerce purchased the yacht three years later to use a decoy boat for catching rumrunners on the Mississippi River during prohibition.
The yacht caught the eye of President Hoover who enjoyed spending time at sea. He often chartered the yacht for his personal use and then officially designated her as the presidential boat in 1933.
She remained as such off and on for some 40 years, until she was sold in 1977 when Jimmy Carter was president of the United States..
The Upper Mississippi
     Minnesota and Wisconsin River Towns.......
The Mad Mariner Magazine has an article about boating on the Mississippi River in the upper Midwest just downstream from Lock and Dam 2 just south of Minnesota's Twin Cities.
Many of the  boaters in the area prefer to cruise the rivers instead of visiting some of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes.   They prefer the rivers because of  their beauty and the picturesque historic towns along their banks.
The area of the Mississippi River from Lock and Dam 2 downstream to just south of Minnesota's Twin Cities lies a the fifty mile stretch of some of the most beautiful landscape in the upper Midwest Mississippi River valley.
Hastings Minnesota; Prescott, Wisconsin; Welch, Minnesota and Red Wing, Minnesota...... An eating adventure in its self with so many great restaurants, bars and burger joints to choose from and town festivals in the summer months.
Captain Refuses To Testify at New Orleans Oil Spill Hearing...
According to a news story on the Waterways Journal.....The US Coast Guard hearing on the cause of the July 23 accident that spilled 280,000 gallons of oil into the Mississippi River in New Orleans has concluded.
Neither the captain of the pushboat Mel Oliver nor the executives of the towing company testified. The captain filed a statement, refusing to testify, and four officers of the company that operated the Mel Oliver submitted statements declining to be interviewed.
 The Mel Oliver was pushing a barge loaded with fuel oil when it suddenly changed course and veered into the path of the ship Tintomara.
The captain of the Mel Oliver was not on board.  He had left the pushboat several days earlier to drive to Illinois for personal reasons.  The Apprentice Mate testified that the two had an arrangement where they would cover for each other when one wanted time away from the pushboat.
Flying Carp......
The St. Charles Journal has a news article on how those pesky flying carp have invaded the area's waters..
The author wrote.."They are not pretty fish".... and they have this one nasty habit of jumping out of the water into the air when they hear the sound of certain boat motors.  They can weigh up to 40 pounds reach heights of 10 feet..... That's dangerous.
An estimated 20 million pounds of Asian carp were harvested last year for over seas consumption.  That has not put a dent in the population.  The carp are a delicacy in many parts of Asia, but Americans tend to not eat them.
Conservation officials believe the only way to decrease their numbers is to eat them.
The Missouri Department of Conservation is working to develop the carp as a food source for zoo animals.  Illinois lawmakers have proposed feeding them to prisoners. Other proposals include making them into carp fertilizer and fish meal.
