Bill, A little flood water doesn't
keep the residents of Grafton and a few die-hard boaters
down. It's a great opportunity for a party. I have sent
a few pictures from Saturday and Sunday at Grafton
Harbor. Obviously we are an island but a great one at
that. The pictures are of a party on the porch on
Saturday, the Loading Dock under water, Piasa Winery
from the back and one of the rock wall from the back of
our boat. It's no longer hard to see over it and the
turkey buzzards sure like to sun themselves on the top.
NOAA says we saw the crest and the water should be on
the way down. Hopefully we will all be out on the river
soon!!! Valerie Aulabaugh

The water levels are starting to fall finally. Alton was at 33 feet on Sunday and is expected to reach 33.2 feet on Monday. Grafton is finally peaking at 30.8 feet. The Illinois River at Hardin has already crested and is starting to fall. Workers have done a good job of stacking sandbags. They even built a wall around the Portage Des Sioux Water Plant. The Missouri National Guard is still keeping an eye on the water though. They are especially watching low spots in West Alton. Hopefully this will be the end of it. For right now, the sandbagging has come to a halt in the St. Louis region for now. On Saturday, the last 1,600 foot barrier in Lincoln County broke, which destroyed about 90 homes and did damage to about 70 homes. On Sunday the waters were supposed to crest in the St. Louis area. For now, they feel that the other levees will hold, so they have stopped sandbagging. If you would like information about future volunteers needed, call 1-800-426-4626. Grafton, Illinois is a great river town. They are used to the Mississippi River and they do what they can to keep their little town going. Most of their antique shops have remained open in spite of the flood waters. A few of the restaurants are still open also. The owner of the Loading Dock has decided to open up a temporary restaurant on the east side of the property. The Health Department allowed it because he will have portable toilets and hand washing stations. He is waiting about a week because he doesn’t want to cause too much extra traffic. He will be opening up though soon and he will sell barbecue and beer. To find out exactly when he will be opening, you can call 618-786-3494. According to STLtoday.com, areas such as Winfield, Foley and Clarksville were all hit hard with the flood this year. Old Monroe was lucky enough to miss the worst part of it. Even though they did get high waters and several homes got water in them or in their basement, there are still many places that got very little damage. There were a couple of residents who totally ignored the warning to evacuate on Friday. These residents have lived there all their lives and feel that they don’t have anything to worry about. Even though their house is on higher ground, the roads around it are flooded. They have to take their Jon boat to go into town to get anything. They can get to their house only by boat. To read more about this town and a few of these residents who were born and raised in Old Monroe. They plan on holding out and they say that they’re not going anywhere. The people in Hardin have been working hard, as many other river towns are to keep the water from getting to them. They have been sandbagging and working around the clock to save their homes and businesses. They are driving farther to work due to road closures and the ferries being down. Now they are questioning the barge traffic. They have wondering why there isn’t a speed limit for these barges that send wakes up to their sandbagged shoreline. They are also asking why they do not have to stay in the middle of the river. They feel that this would help the large wakes that come rushing in their town. On a better subject, the state of Illinois just received $3.5 million in funds to pay 200 workers to start cleaning up the flood areas. They need workers to clean up damaged facilities and others to deliver food, clothing and other items to the flood victims. To read this full document in telegraph.com, click here |

Matt Neustadt, the 29 year old farmer from Portage Des Sioux, who was starring in a reality show, “Farmer Wants a Wife,” was not able to join his friends to watch the finale of the show on Wednesday night. He had to take care of his farm. Since 800 of the 2,000 acres of his family land has got 6 to 15 feet of water in it, he is working to save as many crops that he can. He had to wait until after the show to express his true feelings for one of the single city women who were trying to impress this good old country boy. It really bothered Matt every week when he had eliminate one of the ladies. He was very impressed by 23 year old Brooke. In fact, he would love the chance to talk her into moving to the ‘Show Me Stat.’ Right now his thoughts are not on the reality show, they are on reality – the flood. “Calloway Steam Generators”
was sent in by Bert Yates.
He wrote
"Here’s a sight not often seen on the Upper Miss. Although the picture quality is poor, the bright white cylinders laying on their side are two of the four steam generators being replaced at Callaway during this fall’s outage. The trip started from Chalon, France on May 12th and they arrived at Callaway’s Missouri River docking facility on June 21st. Each steam generator weighs in at a svelte 371.5 tons, not including the packing and shipping containers. Not quite what Mike Tyson tipped the scales for his last fight, but definitely in the heavyweight class! "
