Bill,
   A rarity: a waterspout!

Probably confused some fish, but did not cause damage. But it did evoke tornado-like fear momentarily in yours truly.     We have had some wind, but 74degrees makes it enjoyable.

Local Scientists Say River Project Increases Flood Risk

Yesterday's STLtoday.com contained a news article about the chevrons built by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the downtown St. Louis area of the Mississippi River to aid navigation.

According to a group of local scientists.....The risk of flooding has increased with the recent construction of these three horseshoe-shaped rock formations.   They supposedly slow down water during flood conditions and will cause the water to go higher than it would be otherwise.

Rep. William Lacy Clay and others pledge to keep Delta Queen afloat

According to a news article in Wednesday's edition of the STLtoday.com .....

Rep. William Clay (D-St. Louis) described the Delta Queen steamboat as a "one-of-a-kind American treasure" and an "irreplaceable historic vessel" at a news conference.   He said the boat and the Mississippi River it traveled were critical pieces of St. Louis culture.

Rep. Clay is one of House members  who are trying to rescue the Delta Queen with an amendment to a Coast Guard bill that is pending on the House floor.

Clay and other supporters of the embattled Delta Queen promised on to work around the chairman of the House Transportation Committee and keep the steamboat on America's rivers.

Update: no decision yet

Feb 27, 2008

The decision about the Coast Guard Authorization Bill in the House of Representatives obviously has been postponed, probably until next week. This gives some more time to rally for the Delta Queen amendment, but remember the Committee on Rules will possibly decided already this week whether they allow the amendment to be made.

For the meantime, here are some links to earlier postings at save-the-delta-queen.org that might be of interest to you:

Hi Bill,
I saw on your site that Kinder's is opening this weekend. This picture was taken on our last boat ride leaving Kinder's last fall.

It's been a long winter and with Kinder's opening this weekend. The next thing we know we will all be back on the river sweating in the sun, cruising the river, hitting the sandbars, catching up with friends. Feeling human again. Can't wait to complain how hot it is and feel that warmth of the sun.

St. Louis Levees........

St. Peters Premier 370 Levee Update ........

According to a news article in yesterday's on-line STLtoday.com the deadlock continues between the developers of St. Peters' Premier 370 Business park and the Federal Management Agency over the boundary of the Mississippi River floodway.  A boundary change is required for the business park to become eligible federal flood insurance.

FEMA continues to have questions ....

Illinois officials contend the level will worsen flooding in Grafton, IL and other areas.

The Great River Habitat Alliance has been a constant critic of the levee.

Click here to read the on-line article.

Metro East Levee Update ........

According to a news article in on-line STLtoday.com, dated 13  Feb, 2008, the project to make the levees conform to more stringent FEMA standards is the number one priority for Madison County officials.

The new standard require stronger levees that must withstand a 100-year flood,
without support systems that were accepted before.  After the 93' flood, sandbags could be used to strengthen the levees, but the new rules won't allow that.  The levees have to stand alone.

The price tag for fixing the levee system is estimated at $150 to $180 million.

Decertification of Metro East Levee System

According to a news article in on-line STLtoday.com....the rationale used by the St. Louis District of the US Army Corps of Engineers to justify the “in-channel” chevrons and bendway weirs for navigational purposes will be the topic of discussion by representative of the scientific community.  Discussion by scientist will include research documenting that these in-channel structures can drive flood levels up significantly and the impact of the area.

Click here to read the news article..

What's a Bendway Weir ?  (see above news article)

The following is re-printed from the US Army Corps of Engineers "Applied River Engineering Center" website

Bendway Weirs

Totally Submerged rock weirs are placed on the bottom of the river angled 30 degrees upstream to the river flow.

These Structures are directly beneath the navigation channel, but at a depth that allows barge traffic to pass over the structures unimpeded even during low water conditions.

Bendway Weirs Redirect Currents

With the installation of Bendway Weirs, the secondary currents are redirected. Sediment is deposited between the Bendway Weirs beneath the passing tows rather than building up as a point bar on the inside of the bend. The channel remains shallow and wider than if just revetted along the outer bank.

The Structure

The Bendway Weir is a low level, totally submerged rock structure that is positioned from the outside bankline of the riverbend, angled upstream toward the flow. These underwater structures extend directly into the navigation channel underneath passing tows. Their unique position and alignment alter the river's secondary currents in a manner which controls excessive channel deepening and reduces adjacent riverbank erosion on the outside bendway. Because excessive river depths are controlled, the opposite side of the riverbank is widened naturally. This results in a wider and safer navigation channel through the bend without the need for periodic maintenance dredging.

Effort to save Delta Queen faces another big hurdle

Capt'n Darryll Weil, who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis, sent us a link to an article by Bill McClellan from yesterday's edition of the St. Louis Post Dispatch about the efforts to save the Delta Queen.

Bill McClellan, titled the article ..... Effort to save Delta Queen faces another big hurdle ... and started it off by writing the following :

"For a city that owes its existence to the Mississippi River, St. Louis has paid surprisingly little attention to the drama surrounding the Delta Queen, the storied steamboat whose visits to our riverfront always recall an earlier, more glorious time."

The article  goes on to describe the current situation surrounding the Delta Queen, a bit of the boat's history and includes an interview with Jim Blum, a St. Louis resident and a former captain of the Delta Queen.

February 26th is the day !

Feb 24, 2008

The Delta Queen’s fate is in the hands of 13 people.
We must reach them by Tuesday, February 26th. Please help!

For the first time in this Campaign, legislation to save the Delta Queen could go before the full House of Representatives next week — but only if the House Rules Committee approves an amendment to the Coast Guard Reauthorization Bill that would continue the boat’s exemption from the 1966 Safety at Sea Law. The Committee will meet the afternoon of Tuesday, February 26.

If you have not done so already, please contact the members of the Rules Committee (see the list below) and urge them to approve Congressman Steve Chabot’s amendment to the Coast Guard Reauthorization Bill, H.R. 2830.

And even if you have done so, please contact your own Representative and ask him or her to vote in favor of the amendment when and if it reaches the House Floor on Wednesday, February 27. And ask everyone you know to do the same.

Our River Picture of the Day ---Sunday-- Is from the RiverCam at the lock at Winfield Dam.  This barge has been setting in the lock since Friday.

I called the Lock and Dam yesterday and talked to Jim Williams.  He told me that the tow was setting in the lock there because the ice above the dam was to thick for it to go any further at the present time !

To:           riverbill@prodigy.net
Subject:   Boat at Lock 25
Date:        Sun, 24 Feb 2008 09:54:34 -0600

The name of the towboat that has been at Lock 25 since Friday is the NATHAN P. CENAC, owned by Cenac Towing Co., Inc., Houma, La.
It has two barges of gasoline headed for Canton, Mo.
Before departing Wood River, the boat stocked up on fuel, supplies and groceries, in case it got stuck in the ice.
I'll bet there are some verrrry cold crewmembers from the South on the boat.

I took a couple of shot's from the old lock & dam site here in Alton. We are looking from the Illinois side to the Missouri side.

What's a TWIC ???

TWIC is an acronym for  "Transportation Worker Identification Credential."

The following re-printed from the Transportation Security website

The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is a vital security measure that will ensure individuals who pose a threat do not gain unescorted access to secure areas of the nation's maritime transportation system.

TWIC was established by Congress through the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) and is administered by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Coast Guard. TWICs are tamper-resistant biometric credentials that will be issued to workers who require unescorted access to secure areas of ports, vessels, outer continental shelf facilities and all credentialed merchant mariners. It is anticipated that more than 750,000 workers including longshoremen, truckers, port employees and others will be required to obtain a TWIC.

High Speed Internet Service on the River Update   .......   We received the following e-mail from Capt'n Lloyd Bollinger with some good information about high speed internet service on the river.  Thought I would share it with everyone.

Date:        Thu, 21 Feb 2008 10:31:08 -0600
From:        Bollinger, Lloyd
Subject:    High Speed Internet Service at the Marinas
To:           riverbill@prodigy.net

Bill,

Hope all is well. As you know many of us have struggled to get high speed Internet service at the marinas along the river. Many of us have tried using Verizon or Sprint data cards (EVDO technology), tried setting up directional wireless antennas (802.11 technology), or subscribed to IP satellite services from Dish network and others, all with varying degrees of success.

Well I’ve been chatting with the DSL product manager at TDS telecom, and this week they are lighting DSL equipment in the Orchard Farm Central Office. Over the next 60 days TDS will be lighting two additional signal regeneration points in the Orchard Farm area. Once this project is complete high speed Internet service via DSL will be available at the majority of the marinas along the river.

TDS will be sending out postcards to existing telephone customers about 2 weeks in advance of DSL service availability.

Thought you might find this information interesting.

Lloyd

RiverBill says.... This sounds like good news for us river rat internet junkies.  Thanks for the update. I have been using an AT&T air-card with pretty good success at a lot of locations on and around the river..

Today's observation... The pics of the solar eclipse were cool. I went to watch my daughter play "broom ball" at Forest Park and had my video camera with me (I always carry it in case I run in to --not literally-- any topless women. At 19 degrees the footage would be.. never mind, I'm digressing). Anyway I tried to video tape it. I figured I could "strobe" it and have a time lapse piece. Didn't work. I had to use all of the digital zoom for a good closeup. The camera --not on a tripod--was very shaky. I drank 3 tequilas in short succession to try to steady my hand, but then I couldn't hold the camera. I couldn't stand anymore either. I tried sitting on teh ground which was very cold...the tequila hadn't numbed my butt. Anyway, I appreciate that pic. Wish I couldn't have thought of a shorter way to express my appreciation, but with this hangover...

Yesteryears Picture of the Day

The River Picture on this Day In 2006----- was sent in by Toni and Debbie, out of Sherwood Marina.  It's a picture of their baby, a pet macaw, named Lucy !

Debbie wrote in her e-mail:

Lucy is VERY alive, like a two year old that will never grow up!  She likes the boat, she walks around and poops on the dash all day!  I have a job of cleaning up after her constantly!  She cant be out when its really hot, or cold, but I spray her (and us with water) and that cools us down.  The Bayliner isn't fast, and its all enclosed so it gets HOT.  We cant take her on the run about.  She wouldn't like that at all!  I put a leash on her foot, you can see it in the picture.  Her wings are clipped but it only keeps them from lifting off, if they get a good wind they can fly.  She is only 9 months old now...  just a baby, they live about 80 years.  I will have to will her to someone, (when I get closer to death!)  We could take her to the sand bar, as long as it isn't too hot.  We keep a cage in the boat for her.  I just hope she fits in it this summer!

Yes, Captain Pete is Pete Tully.  He probably wont remember us, but he will remember Lucy, he just loved her and held her for a long time.

We love your web site, Tony checks the water temp every day!  I can tell you spend a lot of time on it.

 Talk soon,

Debbie

We may be on the brink of saving the Delta Queen, but we need your help immediately.

During the week of February 25-29, the Coast Guard Reauthorization Bill, H.R. 2830, is scheduled for a vote by the full House of Representatives. Congressman Steve Chabot will introduce an amendment to the bill that, if allowed by the Rules Committee, will continue the Delta Queens long-standing exemption from the 1966 Safety at Sea Act.

Even if you have done so already, please contact your Representative and ask him or her to vote in favor of Rep. Chabots amendment as part of the Coast Guard Reauthorization Bill, H.R. 2830. The best time to act is this week (February 18-22), when members of Congress will be back in their Districts. You can find complete contact information, including District office phone and fax numbers, at http://www.house.gov .

As you probably know, the only reason that Rep. Chabots current bill, H.R. 3852, has not reached the House floor is that Rep. James Oberstar of Minnesota refuses to let it pass out of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. To learn more about this matter, click on this link: http://www.steamboats.org/index/delta-queen-exemption-background.html . It will take you to a letter written by Mary Charlton, a Discovery Guide on the Delta Queen, in response to concerns expressed by Rep. Nancy Boyda of Kansas. Marys insightful comments may prove helpful in your discussions with your own Representative - and with your two Senators, who ultimately will also need to vote on the exemption issue.

Please spread the word to everyone you know who can help the cause. And many thanks in advance for helping us save this irreplaceable American treasure!

Best regards,

Calhoun County Historical Society Seeks New Home....

According to a news story in last week's TheTelegraph.com.....  the Calhoun County Historical Society is looking for a new home for it's museum, but lacks the funds to obtain one.

The museum is currently on the second floor of the Farm Bureau Building in Hardin, IL.    The group is grateful for use of the space, but the location is causing problems for the society's aging membership. The members have a hard time climbing the stairs, so the museum is open on Wednesdays.   The museum has no heating or cooling either, so it is really not a an ideal environment to store antiques.

U.S. Army Chief of Engineers Launches Blog

WASHINGTON (February 13, 2008) -- Lieutenant General Robert L. Van
Antwerp, the 52nd Chief of Engineers and Commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, today ventured into the blogosphere for the first time with a blog about Iraq reconstruction efforts. Van Antwerp visited Iraq in late January to observe the Corps' ongoing mission there.

The blog, called "Corps-e-spondence," includes RSS (Really Simple Syndication), so readers can subscribe and automatically receive updates. Readers may also post questions and comments.

"This is the way of the future," Van Antwerp said. "We should be out there, too - clearly and openly communicating with the American public every chance we get."

As the commander of the nation's leading public engineering agency, General
Van Antwerp plans to blog about the many missions within the Corps' purview, from water resources and flood risk management to military facilities construction for the Army and Air Force at home and abroad.

Other upcoming topics are likely to include the Gulf Coast recovery efforts in Southeast Louisiana, Afghanistan reconstruction, the Formerly Used Defense Sites program and the Corps' state-of-the-art engineering research and design at its Engineer Research and Development Center.

"Corps-e-spondence" can be found on the USACE web site at:
https://eportal.usace.army.mil/sites/blog

Little Johns Motorsports 2008 Season....

Ashly getting in shape for the upcoming season!

February 13, 2008

Little Johns Motorsports 2008 Season

Hi All

We are very happy in the results of our 2007 season.
We started making our plans for 2008 about six months ago, witch started with the St. Louis Boat Show.

At the show, we were able to visit, and get input from a lot of our friends, and followers. For those of you that did not get our schedule for the 2008 season, here it is.

DATES                            LOCATION
May 17th & 18th.............. Poplar Bluff, MO
June 7th & 8th................. Kentucky Lake, KY

(Pisgah Bay in the Land Between the Lakes)
June 21st & 22nd............. St. Louis, MO (Creve Coeur Lake)
June 28th & 29th.............. Kentucky Lake, KY
July 12th. & 13th.............. Oklahoma City, OK
July 19th. & 20th.............. Augusta, GA
July 26th & 27th............... Kentucky Lake, KY
August 16th. & 17th.......... Livermore, KY
August 23rd & 24th........... Litchfield, IL
September 6th & 7th......... New Athens, IL
November 20th thru 23rd.... World Finals in Phoenix Arizona

This years schedule is at least, if not more, aggressive than last year.

Two boats will be a hand full, but we have two champion boats on one team.

This brings me to the real point of this note.

If anyone out there knows of a possibility of corporate sponsorship, we have packets available.

We have a very good set of numbers, insurance documentation, and any information needed, to make someone proud.

But, with the economy today, we know large contributions, and advertising will be tough.

My conversations at the boat show brought a new idea to mind.

Our team does not need a large deal of money.

Our entry fees and fuel costs are our major expenses.

If you, your family, your small business, your church group, what ever, want to be a part of the fun, noise, and excitement of a normal weekend (to us) we can make that happen.

Thanks to our website, Riverbills.com, and the following of fans nation wide, we know people at every place we go.

Our Plan is this.

For the price of $400.00, when our team comes to your town, your group will be a week end sponsor of our team.

Your name will be announced each time the boat makes a pass. (at least 4 times a day)

You will be welcome to the pit area

We will have a place for your name, or banners, in the pit.

We will arrange for pictures for your home, or office.

Our pit is one of the most active on the circuit,  A LOT OF FUN AND EXCITEMENT

If  this is something that might work for your group,  Please contact me at

  The Stolen Boat

Headed For Cuba

Bill

Not a lot happening this time of year on the river so I thought I would tell you about my stolen boat.

I keep my 07 - 31 ft Pursuit on a lift on Marco Island. We went to the boat to go fishing one morning and it was not on the lift.
Two days later the Coast Guard found the boat, dead in the water, between the Dry Tortugas ( Ft Jefferson) and Cuba with 2 Cubans on board. They had transferred fuel onto the boat that was dirty and it clogged the fuel filters on the motors. They took the filters off and dumped the fuel but installed the filters upside down so the motors would not run. The Coast Guard towed the boat back to Key West. We went to Key West and trailed the boat back to Marco Island. Because the boat was found in international waters the Cubans can not be charged with possession of stolen property. They will be charged with leaving the US without going though immigration. They will carry about 20 people on a boat like ours, from Cuba to the US and get $10K per person if they do not get caught.

It was the first boat stolen from Marco Island in 8 years. They have now stolen 18 boats in South West Florida, since December. All the boats are center consoles longer than 30 ft. Attached are pictures of the boat at the Coast Guard station in Key West.

The first picture is extra fuel in plastic containers

There was about 150 bottles of water on the boat, crackers, 42 cans of Vienna Sausages, Red Bull, and Gatorade.

Boat US Magazine.........Boat Deductions For 2007

According to an article in the on-line Boat US magazine,  some boaters may not be aware that a boat could be considered a second home for federal tax purposes if it has a galley, a head, and sleeping berth.

And.... the mortgage interest paid on the boat loan could be deductible on your federal income taxes.  According to the magazine article, taxpayers may use the mortgage interest deduction for one primary home and one second home and must itemize deductions on their tax returns.  Not all lending institutions send borrowers an IRS form 1098 reporting the interest paid and not receiving the form does not mean you cannot take the deduction.

Your e-mail was forwarded to me by Scott Croft. With regard to towing service on the Mississippi between Alton and Winfield, Sherwood Marina is a BoatU.S. approved towing company in the area. They are located in Portage Des Sioux.

Should you require assistance in that area you can reach them via VHF radio by hailing "TowBoatU.S." on channel 16 or by contacting our 24 Hour Dispatch Service at 1-800-391-4869. A member of our dispatch staff will put you in contact with Sherwood Marina who will direct bill BoatU.S. for the towing assistance up to your selected per incident towing service level ($50, $150 or Unlimited).

If in the event you find yourself in need of assistance in an area without an approved BoatU.S. towing company in operation, your towing service would still apply. You could use any local towing service and BoatU.S. would reimburse your out of pocket expense up to as much as $2,500 if you are carrying the Unlimited Service Level on your Membership.

Of course, even if we don't have an approved towing company in the area you can still feel free to contact our 24 Hour Dispatch Service. In our 15 years of providing on the water dispatching assistance we have developed an extensive data base of independent on the water towing companies so it is quite possible we'll know of a resource in the area that can help you. You would simply pay the bill and submit it to BoatU.S. for reimbursment.

In addition, BoatU.S. has recently reduced the cost of the Unlimited Towing Service Level for our inland Members to more accurately reflect the lower rates charged by commercial towing companies on inland bodies of water. BoatU.S. Members who boat primarily on inland bodies of water can now purchase the Unlimited Towing Service Level for $34 per year, in addition to the $19 annual membership dues (total cost: $53).

Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any additional questions about the BoatU.S. Towing Program. You can also visit www.towboatus.com for more information and a complete listing of our approved towing companies.

Thanks,
Adam

More Erosion Problems in Grafton.........

According to news article in  TheTelegraph.com last week, the city of Grafton is battling more erosion problems from recent storm water runoff in two areas of the river town.

One problem is a blocked-off culvert under Main Street at Tara Point Drive,  the other problem is on Mulberry Street, where the storm water runoff has washed away the street pavement in four places.

Storm water runoff is forming deltas of silt in Grafton Harbor and blocking boats in slips.

Bill H.R. 3852: now 24 cosponsors

Feb 8, 2008Bill H.R. 3852 has got two more cosponsors just recently for a total of 24 Representatives supporting the bill now. New on the list are Robert E. Latta from Ohio and Bart Gordon from Tennessee.

The bill is supposed to save the Delta Queen. To get it straight to the floor of the House of Representatives without Rep. Oberstar’s the Transportation Committee having the chance to block it, the bill needs at least 218 cosponsors (a simple majority of the House or Representatives). It’s still a long way to go. Please continue working on getting the attention of Representatives, Senators and, also extremely important, the public via newspapers, talk radio and TV stations.

Silent Auction At Boat Show for a 2008 Centurion Enzo SD220....

Good morning RiverBill,

During this year's boat show, Classic Marine and Centurion Boats are going to be holding a silent auction for a 2008 Centurion Enzo SD220.   30% of the amount of the winning bid over the minimum bid will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Centurion boats has only selected a couple of dealerships/cities around the country to hold this charity auction, so it's a great thing for St. Louis that they've chosen to do it here.

The Enzo SD220 is an all new model this year and brings a new level of luxury and comfort to the inboard, direct-drive market. The MSRP on the charity boat is just shy of $75K, but the opening bid will be only $34K. So someone can get a great deal on a brand new boat and help out a charity at the same time.

I've provided a link to Centurion's Enzo SD220 page and also attached a picture of what the gelcoat looks like on the charity boat (the attached picture is not the same model however).

Any help you could give us in publicizing this event would be greatly appreciated. The more people who know about it, the more money we'll make for the charity.

Goodbye, Delta Queen - a poem

Feb 6, 2008

We’ve just received a poem about the Delta Queen from 12-year-old Cole Martin, from Huntsville, Alabama, that I’d like to share with everyone. We don’t take any reponsibility for shedding a tear or two when reading this, so be prepared. Cole, thank you very much for your contribution and support.

Goodbye, Delta Queen

She wakes up every morning
To a loud whistle blow.
She spends each day
as though it were her last to show
.

All day, she watches her brothers and sisters on deck;
She listens to the ragtime sound.
She watches America’s towns go by.
Proud to be America’s angel riverbound.

She is royalty on the river.
Persistence and endurance are her claim to fame.
Why must they dock her?
She is the meaning of American spirit to tame.

These days of freedom are numbered.
She has been through good times and bad…that is our bond.
The Delta Queen should cruise toward the sunset…
and beyond
.

Mississippi River Chemistry Being Changed By Agriculture .......  According to a news article, dated 30 Jan 2008, in the on-line Medical News Today ......

Researchers have concluded that the majority of the increase in water and carbon dioxide in the Mississippi River is a result of some of today's Midwestern farming practices such as crop type, crop rotation, liming and changes in tile drainage.

A research team has studied 100-year-old data on the Mississippi River that is stored at two New Orleans water treatment plants along with data on water export and precipitation.   "A notable finding is that changes in farming practices are more important than changes in precipitation to the increase in water being discharged into the river,"

They  demonstrated the effects of excess water on the carbon content of the Mississippi River and showed that nutrients and pollution in the water are altering the chemistry of the Gulf of Mexico.

"It's like the discovery of a new large river being piped out of the corn belt."

 Hi Bill,

We took this picture 2 weekends ago (2007). We had stopped in Alton after a drive down the river road. We did see a few eagles, and had a great afternoon. But this was a 1st. We had a great laugh after we walked out of Fast Eddies and this was in the parking lot.

See ya on the river soon!

A private initiative to save the steamboat Delta Queen

Press Release reprinted from the

Save The Delta Queen Website

Jan 31, 2008

Today Joe Ueberroth, President of Majestic America Line and Chairman/CEO of Ambassadors International Inc. is sending out the following message to all supporters of the Delta Queen. We consider this as an important milestone in the fight to save the Delta Queen. After months of behind-the-scenes activity, Majestic America Line is now also approaching the public directly, emphatically and emotionally to save our beloved steamboat Delta Queen!

Along with the message comes a comprehensive Delta Queen Whitepaper with some eye-opening facts. Read it and send it to your Representatives, Senators, Presidential Candidates!

Dear Delta Queen Supporter

As we have discussed, saving the Delta Queen is a non-partisan issue - she is a U.S. flag vessel, with an all-American crew, she is U.S. owned and pays U.S. taxes. She is a registered historic treasure of the Department of the Interior and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, she is a National Historic Landmark and also a member of the National Maritime Hall of Fame.   Since 1968 her operating exemption  acknowledging her wood super structure has been granted 9 consecutive times by both democrats and republicans, she was good enough and safe enough to host three presidents and a princess.   Despite all this, the Chairman of the Senate Commerce and Transportation Committee and the Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee won’t even let the Delta Queen extension go to a vote.  However, Congress did find the time to exempt a foreign owned cruise line, with foreign built ships from the Jones Act, passed in 1886, which protects American maritime jobs.  Due to Congress’ exemption, the United States Coast Guard estimated that 900 - 1,200 foreign workers will be employed by that cruise line in 2008.  In contrast, if nothing is done for the Queen then on November 1, 2008 more than 120 American jobs will be lost (directly and not including the revenue she brings to many small towns in a dozen states) and we will all lose a little bit of our cultural heritage.

I have personally walked the halls of Congress to gain support.  The company has hired consultants and lobbyists to gain support.  Thousands of Delta Queen loyalists have sent e-mails to Congress to garner support.  To date, all to no avail.

As we are hearing from our Presidential candidates in speeches across the country, " Washington is broken and the country requires a real change."   When we look at the circumstances surrounding the Delta Queen, it symbolizes what is wrong in America .  I ask myself, what has America come to when unions are actively fighting against American jobs?  What has America become when our politicians are not fighting to protect our history and traditions?  What has our Congress evolved to when committee chairs are so powerful that they, at their sole discretion, will not let legislation that has passed 9 times even reach the floor for a vote?

At the same time, I know that in America , when enough people care, we can overcome great odds, right wrongs, and act in the best interest of the people and the generations to follow.  I also know that the Delta Queen is worth fighting for and that there are so many people that are passionate about protecting her ability to operate for future generations.  It has become obvious that we need our fight to "Save the Queen," to elevate her cause into the national discussion and there is nothing as powerful as talk radio in order to achieve this end.  In order to save the Queen we need a voice that can be heard in Washington .  It is my sincere hope that the power of talk radio can make our Presidential candidates take a position on this issue, bring change in Washington , and preserve a national treasure for future generations as well as its American jobs.

What you can do!

We need a strong, immediate, focused grassroots effort to do the following:

1)    E-mail the radio shows below and tell them how important saving the Queen is to you.

2)    E-mail the candidates urging them to take a position on saving the Queen.

3)    Pass on the White Paper attached to friends and fans of the Queen and ask them to do the same 3 steps.

Thank you for your support.

Sunday

Updated Sunday at 10:45 AM

The River Picture on this Day In 2005---Sunday--  was a series of 3 pictures of an eagle catching lunch on the Mississippi River near Alton, IL. The first picture is of the eagle right after grabbing a fish out of the river. He has one leg down and is holding the fish with the other leg sort of behind his body. In the next one he has his head down checking out the catch. (He is flying towards us.) The 3rd picture is an excellent shot of the eagle and his prey. Mr. Pat Reid of "Crystal Photography" also took this set of pictures.

The River Picture on this Day In 2005---Saturday--  was a shot taken by Mr. Pat Reid of "Crystal Photography".  (Also know in some circles as Capt'n of the Camera)

What a great shot of that eagle cruising along, with his wing tips "up", right above the surface of the Mississippi River. Pat told me he took this picture from the Missouri side of the river the near Alton Lock and Dam when him and a friend were trying out a new lens.   What a shot !

According to a news story on 5ksdk.com a black lab was spotted floating down the Platte River in Nebraska on a piece of ice on Wednesday.  No one knows how he got there, but he was trapped on an ice flow on the river that wasn't quite frozen over. He was in the middle of a river that was running on both sides.

The story has a happy ending....Max finally made a move on his own, was rescued and reunited with his owners.
