Rep. William Lacy Clay and others pledge to keep Delta Queen afloat
According to a news article in Wednesday's edition of the STLtoday.com .....
Rep. William Clay (D-St. Louis) described the Delta Queen steamboat as a "one-of-a-kind American treasure" and an "irreplaceable historic
vessel" at a news conference. He said the boat and the Mississippi River it traveled were critical pieces of St. Louis culture. Clay
and other supporters of the embattled Delta Queen promised on to work around the chairman of the House Transportation Committee and keep the
steamboat on America's rivers.

Update: no decision yet
The decision about the Coast Guard Authorization Bill in the House of Representatives obviously has been postponed, probably until next week. This gives some more time to rally for the Delta Queen amendment, but remember the Committee on Rules will possibly decided already this week whether they allow the amendment to be made.

St. Peters Premier 370 Levee Update ........ According to a news article in yesterday's on-line STLtoday.com the deadlock continues between the developers of St. Peters' Premier 370 Business park and the Federal Management Agency over the boundary of the Mississippi River floodway. A boundary change is required for the business park to become eligible federal flood insurance. FEMA continues to have questions .... Illinois officials contend the level will worsen flooding in Grafton, IL and other areas. The Great River Habitat Alliance has been a constant critic of the levee.

Metro East Levee Update ........ According to a news article in on-line STLtoday.com, dated 13 Feb, 2008, the project to make the levees conform to more stringent FEMA standards is the number one priority for Madison County officials.
The new standard require stronger levees
that must withstand a 100-year flood, The price tag for fixing the levee system is estimated at $150 to $180 million.

Press Conference Tues, Feb 26, 2008 Adams Mark Hotel Decertification of Metro East Levee System According to a news article in on-line STLtoday.com....the rationale used by the St. Louis District of the US Army Corps of Engineers to justify the “in-channel” chevrons and bendway weirs for navigational purposes will be the topic of discussion by representative of the scientific community. Discussion by scientist will include research documenting that these in-channel structures can drive flood levels up significantly and the impact of the area.

~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~~^~~~~~ Effort to save Delta Queen faces another big hurdle
Capt'n Darryll Weil, who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis, sent us a link to an article by Bill McClellan from yesterday's edition of the St. Louis Post Dispatch about the efforts to save the Delta Queen.
Bill McClellan, titled the article ..... Effort to save Delta Queen faces another big hurdle ... and started it off by writing the following :
"For a city that owes its
existence to the Mississippi River, St. Louis has paid surprisingly little
attention to the drama surrounding the Delta Queen, the storied steamboat
whose visits to our riverfront always recall an earlier, more glorious time."
The article goes on to describe the current situation surrounding the
Delta Queen, a bit of the boat's history and includes an interview with Jim
Blum, a St. Louis resident and a former captain of the Delta
Queen. Click
What's a TWIC ??? TWIC is an acronym for "Transportation Worker Identification Credential."
The following re-printed from the Transportation Security website
The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is a vital security measure that will ensure individuals who pose a threat do not gain unescorted access to secure areas of the nation's maritime transportation system. TWIC was established by Congress through the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) and is administered by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Coast Guard. TWICs are tamper-resistant biometric credentials that will be issued to workers who require unescorted access to secure areas of ports, vessels, outer continental shelf facilities and all credentialed merchant mariners. It is anticipated that more than 750,000 workers including longshoremen, truckers, port employees and others will be required to obtain a TWIC.
Larry Demko (larry@fastrac.tv) Today's observation... The pics of the solar eclipse were cool. I went to watch my daughter play "broom ball" at Forest Park and had my video camera with me (I always carry it in case I run in to --not literally-- any topless women. At 19 degrees the footage would be.. never mind, I'm digressing). Anyway I tried to video tape it. I figured I could "strobe" it and have a time lapse piece. Didn't work. I had to use all of the digital zoom for a good closeup. The camera --not on a tripod--was very shaky. I drank 3 tequilas in short succession to try to steady my hand, but then I couldn't hold the camera. I couldn't stand anymore either. I tried sitting on teh ground which was very cold...the tequila hadn't numbed my butt. Anyway, I appreciate that pic. Wish I couldn't have thought of a shorter way to express my appreciation, but with this hangover... |
Debbie wrote in her e-mail: Lucy
is VERY alive, like a two year old that will never grow up! She
likes the boat, she walks around and poops on the dash all day! I have a
job of cleaning up after her constantly! She cant be out when its really
hot, or cold, but I spray her (and us with water) and that cools us down.
The Bayliner isn't fast, and its all enclosed so it gets HOT. We cant
take her on the run about. She wouldn't like that at all! I put a
leash on her foot, you can see it in the picture. Her wings are clipped
but it only keeps them from lifting off, if they get a good wind they can fly.
She is only 9 months old now... just a baby, they live about 80 years.
I will have to will her to someone, (when I get closer to death!) We
could take her to the sand bar, as long as it isn't too hot. We keep a
cage in the boat for her. I just hope she fits in it this summer! Yes,
Captain Pete is Pete Tully. He probably wont remember us, but he will
remember Lucy, he just loved her and held her for a long time. We love your web site, Tony checks the water temp every day! I can tell you spend a lot of time on it. Talk soon, Debbie |
According to a news story in last week's TheTelegraph.com..... the Calhoun County Historical Society is looking for a new home for it's museum, but lacks the funds to obtain one.
The museum is currently on the second floor of the Farm Bureau Building in
Hardin, IL. The group is grateful for use of the space, but
the location is causing problems for the society's aging membership. The
members have a hard time climbing the stairs, so the museum is open on Wednesdays.
The museum has no heating or cooling either, so it is really not a an ideal environment to store antiques.
Ashly getting in shape for the upcoming season!
DATES
LOCATION
(Pisgah Bay in the Land Between the Lakes)
This years schedule is at least, if not more, aggressive than last year. Two boats will be a hand full, but we have two champion boats on one team. This brings me to the real point of this note. If anyone out there knows of a possibility of corporate sponsorship, we have packets available.
We have a very good set of numbers, insurance documentation, and any information needed, to make someone proud. But, with the economy today, we know large contributions, and advertising will be tough. My conversations at the boat show brought a new idea to mind. Our team does not need a large deal of money. Our entry fees and fuel costs are our major expenses. If you, your family, your small business, your church group, what ever, want to be a part of the fun, noise, and excitement of a normal weekend (to us) we can make that happen. Thanks to our website, Riverbills.com, and the following of fans nation wide, we know people at every place we go. Our Plan is this. For the price of $400.00, when our team comes to your town, your group will be a week end sponsor of our team. Your name will be announced each time the boat makes a pass. (at least 4 times a day) You will be welcome to the pit area We will have a place for your name, or banners, in the pit. We will arrange for pictures for your home, or office. Our pit is one of the most active on the circuit, A LOT OF FUN AND EXCITEMENT If this is something that might work for your group, Please contact me at The Family And Team Of Little Johns Motorsports
Boat US Magazine.........Boat Deductions For 2007 And.... the mortgage interest paid on the boat loan could be deductible on your federal income taxes. According to the magazine article, taxpayers may use the mortgage interest deduction for one primary home and one second home and must itemize deductions on their tax returns. Not all lending institutions send borrowers an IRS form 1098 reporting the interest paid and not receiving the form does not mean you cannot take the deduction.
According to
news
article in TheTelegraph.com last week, the city of Grafton is battling
more erosion problems from recent storm water runoff in two areas of the river
town. One problem is a blocked-off culvert under Main Street at Tara Point Drive, the other problem is on Mulberry Street, where the storm water runoff has washed away the street pavement in four places.
Storm water runoff is forming deltas of silt in Grafton Harbor and blocking
boats in slips. |
Looking for some fresh river fish ? It sounds like the place to go.
Opened in 1995......It's an old-time kind of place where you can buy fresh river catfish and buffalo. A large cutting board and an ice-case full of fresh fish and a chalkboard advertising the day's catch. You can even buy fishing lures and fish-frying gear there.
