Our River Picture and e-mail of the Day...Saturday... is from Mike Sharky, with a story about last year's winter storm.

Bill,

December 1st will be one year since we lost our beloved river boat to Mother Nature's ice storm. So many damaged boats and lives changed up and down the river as a result of that event.
Ours was one of them.

1. Summer 2006 - Pristine '88 250 CC Sea Ray at Hat Island - Summer fun!
2. December 1st, 2006 - Pristine '88 250 CC Sea Ray, crushed by Mother Nature's version of Pearl Harbor
(my boat is lower right with the green bow sticking out at John's Harbor) - Boat destroyed and totaled.
3. Summer 2007 - Is the replacement boat, '89 260 CC Sea Ray

How 'bout that!
Due to space and timing issues we now hail out of Woodland Marina and because of what happened, we named the boat "Compromising Positions".
Dedicated River Rats and those who also had to recover from that ice storm might appreciate our story.

See you on the water,
Mike Sharkey

The River Picture on this Day In 2005 ---Sunday--- .was sent in by Captain Glenn Sadowski out of Woodland Marina.  Glenn wrote in his e-mail;

In regard to today's  (11-30-05) "Not your normal Patrol" ....

Hats off to all those emergency responders!

Here's a photo of the Auxiliary Vessel "Liberty"  that I snapped on that day.

River Bill says.......... A person has to wonder just what is going in the minds of these folks when this picture was snapped.  They are heading out towards a large burning boat and all kinds of things could happen.  Looks like the firefighters, a man and a woman,  are from Orchard Farm (OFFPD).  The Coast guard Auxiliary is transporting them to the fire.

Both, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Firefighters did a fine job on that day...And they usually don't get enough credit for it.

As you said......

HATS OFF TO ALL THE EMERGENCY RESPONDERS.

Loopers…….  Did you know that more than 150 boat owners notified America's Great Loop Cruisers' Association in 2007 that they were planning to attempt the loop this year ?

The circumnavigation of Eastern North America by water is known as the Great Loop. Also known as the Great Circle, the trip varies from 5,000 miles to 7,500 miles depending on the options used. The boats used range from personal watercraft (jet-skis) to 60-foot yachts. Both sailboats and powerboats are used but the most common boats are 34 - 45 ft trawlers. The main factors that govern the size of the boat is the limited draft (5 feet) in some locations on the loop and the height of one bridge (19 feet) in Chicago, Illinois. People traveling the Great Loop are known as "loopers." The numbers of people attempting this voyage is growing with the Baby Boomers reaching retirement age.

For the person that stated that everyone on the river drinks. You should think before making a statement like that. I myself hang with many different groups out on the river, and i can say that not everyone drinks. I have many friends that do not drink and enjoy the river. Maybe all the people you hang with enjoy drinking out there, but there are many boaters who do not. Think before you make a statement like that please.

Water Patrol Issues Fall Safe Boating Tips

Fall signals the beginning of the various hunting seasons for Missourians. The waterways that were once filled with recreational boaters are now being inhabited by hunters traveling to their favorite "hot spots". Each year more hunters will die from drowning and the effects of hypothermia than from gunshot wounds. Why is the seasonal hunter who uses a boat at such a risk? Many hunters do not regard themselves as "boaters" and as a consequence do not consider the special conditions and challenges of the marine environment. The avid hunter tends to focus more on firearm safety and the pursuit of game than on boating safety. To ensure a safe hunting trip, you should be familiar with your boat, its equipment, the weather, and the basics of responsible and safe boating. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before your next outing:

·  Personal Flotation Devices (PFD's) are essential to safe waterborne hunting. In Missouri, you must have a wearable PFD for each person aboard. Make sure the life jacket is in good, serviceable condition and easily accessible. When you are sizing your PFD to fit, take into consideration the extra clothing you may be wearing. The life jacket should fit snugly and comfortably. Accidents can happen suddenly on the water, so it is strongly suggested that everyone wear their PFD. An acceptable alternative would be special purpose Coast Guard approved PFD's that are lightweight and unobtrusive.

·  Be familiar with the characteristics of your boat. Most hunters use smaller, more easily transportable craft. Boats of smaller dimensions tend to be more unstable in the water and prone to swamping or capsizing. Most fall and winter drownings occur when a small watercraft becomes unbalanced, due to a sudden shift of passengers or load, and the boat turns over. Avoid standing up or moving around in the boat. Be cautious when leaning over the side of the boat to retrieve items (such as duck decoys) from the water. Never move about your boat with a loaded gun or rifle.

·  Don't overload your boat with passengers or equipment. Check your capacity plate and stay well within those guidelines. An overloaded boat can be swamped easily by even small wakes.

·  Dress properly to protect against hypothermia in case you become wet. Clothing made of polypropylene, wool and synthetic fleece is the best to wear while boating during the fall. Again, your best protection in the event of an accidental "dunking" is to already be wearing your PFD.

·  File a float plan with someone who can act responsibly should problems arise. Let them know where you plan to be and how long you plan on being out. If you have a cell phone and service is available, call the person you left the float plan with and give them a periodic "status check".

·  Know the day's weather forecast and stay alert to changing weather conditions. When water and air temperatures are lower, there is a greater frequency of rapidly developing storms. If the weather looks bad or if there is a forecast for upcoming storms, don't risk going out. If you get caught in a squall, head for shore diagonally to the waves. Move passengers and equipment to the center of the boat to improve stability. Avoid crossing large bodies of water during rough weather.

·  Be prepared for an emergency. Many boating, hunting and fishing accidents can be minimized if you are prepared for an emergency. This includes being able to provide assistance to fellow boaters should a problem occur. Not all accidents are avoidable, but with careful planning and preparation, nearly all are survivable.

The River Pictures on this Day In 2006 -----Friday--- was from Captain Robert "Slow Ride" Cope.

His picture is of the Grafton Ferry going through the chute between the islands that separate the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers at the confluence of the two rivers.  Robert captured the autumn colors on the tree nearest to us that seems to jump out in front of everything else in the picture, which really contrasts to the greenery on the island on the other side of the ferry.  In the background are the bluffs along the Great River Road ....And Oh Yeah...That blue water on a bright and sunny Fall day.  Looks like a good day to take a ride on the Ferry.

River History

When did the Corps' involvement in river and harbor improvements begin?......

The 1824 General Survey Act authorized the President to have the Corps survey, plan, and submit estimates for routes "of such roads and canals as he may deem of national importance, in a commercial or military point of view, or necessary for the transportation of public mail." It also appropriated $30,000 to establish a Board of Engineers for Internal Improvements to help carry out the surveys prior to the passage of this act. There is little question that the legislation was instrumental in establishing the important role of the Corps in planning ferderal civil works projects. However, it was not until a few weeks later that the Corps received specific responsibilities for undertaking river improvements. An act "to improve the navigation of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers," passed on 24 May 1824, authorized the President (using Army Engineers) to remove snags on the two rivers and to conduct experiments to find ways to eliminate sand bars. To carry out the act's provisions, Congress appropriated $75,000.

Water Patrol Cautions Boaters About Cold Water Dangers

A beautiful, sunshiny day on the water during winter months is a cold weather angler's delight. There are no crowds of boaters on lakes and rivers in the colder months of the year. Fishermen and hunters work their favorite coves nearly undisturbed. What could possibly go wrong in such a serene sitting? Lurking just below the water's surface is the deadly duo of cold shock and hypothermia. These two potential killers account for nearly half of the fatal boating accidents nationwide that occur when the water is cold. Most such accidents occur in calm weather, relatively close to shore. With fewer boaters on the water, the likelihood of a prompt rescue is greatly reduced. Off season boaters must be as self-sufficient as possible.

Immersion in cold water rapidly incapacitates and may kill boaters who are not wearing protective clothing. Surfers, sailboarders, and river paddlers wear wet suits or dry suits when the water is cold. Off season sailors, fishermen, hunters, and other folks out in small, open boats can use the same precautions to help improve their safety on the water. Clothing is your first line of defense in an accidental dunking. Wear clothing that permits safe cold water immersion AND a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Cold water adventurers should invest in flotation suits, which provide extra insulation along with the flotation of a life jacket.

What happens in cold water? Cold water removes heat from the body 25 times faster than cold air. About 50% of that heat loss occurs through the head. Physical activity such as swimming or other struggling in the water increases heat loss. Survival time can be reduced to minutes. Strong swimmers have died before swimming 100 yards in cold water. In water under 40o F, victims have died before swimming 100 feet. For this segment, let's talk about "cold shock" first. The momentum of an individual falling overboard usually drives the victim under the surface for several seconds. Exposure of the head and chest to cold water causes an involuntary gasping reflex. When the victim is not wearing a life jacket, the gasping may occur under water. In some cases, cold water is drawn into the lungs; in others, the muscles controlling airflow into the windpipe (trachea) close and stay closed. Either outcome prevents effective breathing when the victim surfaces. The victim, now unable to breathe, is seen struggling briefly at the surface before disappearing from view. Exposure of the head and chest to cold water also causes sudden increases in the heart rate and blood pressure that may result in cardiac arrest. It should be noted being able to swim in the warm waters of summer has nothing to do with survival in cold water.

What can you do to prevent a cold water shock immersion? Do not overload your boat and keep the weight low and in the center of the vessel. Small craft tend to be unstable in the water and excessive motion or sudden movement can cause the boat to capsize. Wear layered clothing that can trap air in its fibers. Most importantly, always wear your PFD when on the water. It will help you conserve energy and may buy you enough time to escape the waters icy grip. Carry dry clothing in a waterproof bag. Tie a bailer and paddle to your boat. A short sling tied to the transom, with a foot rest in the loop, may assist boat reentry. Attach a whistle or horn to your life jacket. Remember, exiting the cold waters quickly is critical for survival. With the passing of time while immersed, the danger of death from hypothermia becomes an even greater threat.

The River Pictures on this Day In 2004 -------- .from three years ago (2004) .......was of the towboat Captain Bill pushing a load of barges south on the Mississippi River around UMR 234. The Name the rounded lines and the styling of the vessel caught our attention, it looks like it has a fresh coat of paint and everything was all bright and shiny. It even has a large picture window, with drapes, on the 2nd deck that goes all the way across the front of the towboat. I did an internet search and found out that this vessel was built in 1956 and originally was named the "Huntington". To search for pictures and info on a particular towboat take a look at the Photo Center at the LittleRiverBooks.com.

Update on Bangert Island Trail ....... According to a news article in today's edition of the on-line Post Dispatch......... the St. Charles County Council has "signed off" on the construction of a recreational trail on a Bangert Island.  The island is located on the Missouri River island south interstate 70 and downtown St. Charles.

The  trail is expected to open in the spring of 2008..

The County Council also signed off on a 100-acre riverside park just south of the Page Avenue extension.

Fresh Water Mussels........ According to a news article in today's edition of the on-line Post Dispatch......... scientists have been restocking Missouri's streams and rivers with native mussels since the late 1990s because the mollusks are vanishing here and from across a lot of North America.

Habitat loss, water pollution, and competition from invasive species like zebra mussels, have all taken their toll.  Ten of the sixty five species found in the state of Missouri are considered endangered !

This summer, a team scientists built a device to simulate natural water flow in a stream.  This devise helps the mussels grow bigger in research ponds now.  Some mussels grew to about 4 inches in diameter before they are released this year.  Previously they would only get as big as a grain of rice.

They have also learned how to tag the mussel that are released....using superglue.

The River Pictures on this Day In 2006 --------- was of an "unusual looking boat" heading down-river around the Two Branch Island area. (UMR 232).   It was being piloted by our friends Captain Greg Sadowski, Dave Kelly and Tom Pleimann , who operate out of Woodland Marina.  They were are on another of their delivery trips.

Dave wrote:

Say Hey RiverBill,

Just a note from your twin bro, Dave of "Gypsy Rose".

Your pic. of the day is the "INFINITY" on its way to St. Clair Shores, MI. It will be finished in Manitowoc WI., Where it will have the top deck trucked over and installed.  This is because it would not have made it under the fixed bridges in Chicago.
We had just cleared the lock ahead of the Mississippi queen, noticed the pic on Riverbills.
Captn. Greg and brother Glenn took this boat brand new to New York city where they docked 400 feet from the World Trade towers 90 days before 9-11. It was used to carry people across the Hudson that day.
It then went to Connecticut for 2 seasons, St. Thomas Virgin islands for a while, Then in Naples, back to LaCrosse for rebuild before heading to it's new home.
Greg has about 9,000 actual water miles on this boat.
We are currently on the Illinois river just 60 miles below Chicago. (Tuesday evening @3:30PM).   Will send some photos after the decks are on.
Leaving this boat in Manitowoc and returning to LaCrosse to start down river with a new one later this week.

   I'll keep you posted

ITCS MEMO # 2608

Chain of Rocks Canal, Upper Mississippi River (UMR) Mile 194

All navigation interests are advised that the Mississippi River will be
closed to all navigation between UMR Mile 194 and UMR Mile 196 on 14
November
2007 from 0800 to 1400 hours to allow a construction dredge contractor
(LW
Matteson) to sink a dredge pipe across the channel at approximately UMR
Mile 194.3.

The contract dredge will be operating on the right descending bank of
the Mississippi River at the confluence of the Missouri River. The
dredge pipe will be routed on the right descending bank above UMR Mile
194.3 and on the left descending bank at the head of the Chain of Rocks
Canal.

This dredge work is associated with an ongoing multi-year construction
project and is not part of our maintenance dredging activity.

Goldenrod Showboat and the Tugboat America

Moored on the Illinois River in September of 2007

Goldenrod Showboat & Tugboat America Update..... The on-line St. Louis Post Dispatch had a news article about the Goldenrod Showboat and the Tugboat "America" in Monday's edition.

The article is written about the historic Goldenrod Showboat that use to be moored at the downtown St. Louis Riverfront and then at the St. Charles Riverfront. The showboat is now moored on the Illinois River near Kampsville, IL. and it is tied up in a court battle over some unpaid mooring charges.

It is probable that an agreement will be worked out to allow the owner, a St. Charles businessman, to move elsewhere and continue his quest to find a new use for the vessel.....But one option put forth by the owner of the mooring site is to recover their costs by selling the boat for scrap . Dismantle it, sell the furnishings, burn the wooden structure to retrieve the copper and sell the steel hull to a salvage company.

According to the Steamboats.org website  "The Goldenrod is the oldest riverboat in the nation and the last surviving original Mississippi River Basin showboat in existence."

According to the news article....The Goldenrod was given a national historic landmark designation in 1968, but this will not prevent it's demolition.

Click here to read the on-line news article in STLtoday.com.

Keep your anchor right here for more news on the Goldenrod Showboat as it becomes available.

The paper edition of this news article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch also gave us an update on the Towboat America. It's rusting hull used to be moored just below Winfield Dam on the Mississippi River until November of 2004,  when it was moved to it's present mooring site on the Illinois River.  The owners of the mooring site on the Illinois River live aboard the vessel and it is being converted into a bed and breakfast.

Below are links to pictures of the Towboat America when it was moored near Winfield Dam.....Click here for aerial shotrear viewup-close front view.

Update on Water Resource Development Act....... According to a news article in the on-line Post Dispatch.....the projects in the WRDA are still years away, even after the  House and Senate overrode the President's veto last week.   It will most likely take a year to get the money authorized for the projects and a decade to get the first of seven new locks authorized by the bill.

The legislation that was just passed only gives the "Go-Ahead" for funding which will probably take place this year. The pace for the construction of the projects depends on how fast Congress hands out the money..

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jefferson City, Missouri

Lake Boat Race Sponsorship Will Change Hands In 2008

The Lake Rescue Shootout, formerly known as the Shooter's Shootout, is a tradition at the Lake of the Ozarks. The event is used to raise money to benefit lake area fire departments. The local fire departments have announced they will not apply for a regatta permit from the Water Patrol to host the event next year. The Missouri State Water Patrol has received several initial applications from lake businesses to host the event in 2008. The applications vary in location from the 7 mile mark to the 34 mile mark.

In the best interest of public safety, the Missouri State Water Patrol believes the race should remain in its traditional location between the 20 and 22 mile mark of Lake of the Ozarks, which was not requested in any of the initial applications. Continuing to hold the race in the traditional location provides the best access to emergency medical services as well as the safest overall environment for the event.

"Many factors have to be considered when evaluating a regatta permit: access to emergency services, distances from docks, homes, shoreline and bridges, and the number of officers it will take to provide a safe environment in any particular area. We also have to evaluate the boat traffic patterns, congestion, and access to coves and property as we work through the application process" said Colonel Rad Talburt.

During the history of the Shootout, the Missouri State Water Patrol has provided numerous officers contributing well over 100 man hours to the event each year to ensure the safety of the participants and observers. The Water Patrol recognizes the importance of this event to the Lake of the Ozarks community and will continue to consider applications with an acceptable course layout and location.

The Water Patrol has set a December 15th deadline for regatta applications for the event formerly known as the Lake Rescue Shootout. The deadline is due to the complexity of scheduling an event as expansive as the Shootout boat races. The Water Patrol will insure that the regatta permit recipient has adequate time for planning and scheduling in order to provide the safest environment for the event.

The River Pictures on this Day In 2004 ----Saturday--- is once again dedicated to all of those in our boating family who have proudly served in our Armed Forces.  We pay tribute to you !

One year after World War I drew to a close, President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11, 1919 as Armistice Day--a national holiday to celebrate victory in "the war to end all wars." Yet the dream of world of peace was soon shattered as first World War II, then the Korean Conflict called America's troops back to the battlefield. In 1954, Armistice Day was re-named as Veterans Day, a fitting tribute to all the men and women who have defended the cause of freedom around the world.

The River Pictures on this Day In 2004 ----Saturday--- was a house with a view that sits on a hill along the banks of the Illinois River. What a view it must be !

This picture was taken around the area where the Illinois River converges with the Mississippi River and the water in the foreground is that of the Mississippi. The Illinois River lies behind the islands in the foreground.

The River Pictures on this Day In 2006 -----Friday---- was named  "Autumn Colors".   It's a shot looking up-river at what might be Apple Island Slough.  Look at those colors and the reflections in the water.  The water always looks so blue this time of the year.

This is one of the sloughs that can be seen from the road connecting Highway B to the Golden Eagle Ferry landing on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River.  My map shows that the ferry landing on the Missouri side of the river is located on "Apple Island".  I am guessing that this slough probably ran between Apple Island and the mainland of Missouri at one time.

Melvin Price Locks and Dam Scour Hole Repairs Completed Early

St. Louis, Mo. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in St. Louis today announced that work to repair scour holes upstream of the massive concrete Melvin Price Locks and Dam structure south of Alton, Ill., was completed Thursday, Nov. 1.

According to the area engineer Mike Feldmann, this was accomplished in spite of 10 days being lost due to high water stopping work at the site.

The work was carried out by Columbia, Ill., contactor Luhr Brothers Inc., under a contract calling for about 16,000 tons of rock to be placed in eight scour holes in the river bottom. The holes were discovered in April during a periodic sonar survey conducted by the St. Louis District survey vessel, MV Boyer.

The contract, anticipated two more weeks possibly being required to complete work by Nov. 15.

The contract was let for $1.6 million and work began October 2. According to Feldmann, despite the weather delays, it appears that the work was completed slightly under budget as well as ahead of schedule.

The scour holes did not pose a threat to the structure or to public safety but the Corps expedited repairs to ensure the holes did not enlarge or deepen, requiring potentially more expensive repairs in the future.

As a low water structure, the Melvin Price Locks and Dam ensures that a Congressionally-mandated 9 foot deep, 300 foot wide navigation channel is maintained upstream of the structure. The lock plays a significant role in the nation’s economy, annually locking through more than 70 million tons of commodities. The lock is the second busiest on the Upper Mississippi River and it is the newest, put into operation October 10, 1989.

Fall Colors Predictions......Missouri Department of Conservation foresters update "Fall Color" reports weekly from mid-September through early-November.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation website this past weekend was the peak of fall colors for the St. Louis area.  Since the area had it's first official freeze and some high winds for several days...... most all of the of the early fall colored leaves are off the trees.

However, many species of the oak trees are now turning from green to a variety of red, orange and yellow colors. This show should last for a few weeks unless we get some high winds or hard rains that would knock the leaves off the trees.

MDC predicts several weeks of good fall colors for the St. Louis area yet !

Corps waives day use fees for Vets on Veterans Day

St. Louis, Mo.The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will waive day use fees for veterans, active, reserve and guard service members and their families at its recreation areas in the St. Louis District and nationwide on Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11.

"Our intent is to honor and support the men and women who have served our nation in the armed services," Major General Don T. Riley, the Corps’ Director of Civil Works, said. "We chose this occasion to encourage our veterans and those on active duty to enjoy our parks and realize the benefits of outdoor recreation activities."

On November 11, day use fees will be waived for veterans, active, reserve and guard service members and their families visiting Corps-managed recreation areas. This waiver includes boat launch ramp and swim beach fees. However, fees for camping and camping related services as well as fees for specialized facilities, such as picnic shelters, will not be waived.

The Corps is one of the largest providers of outdoor recreation, operating 2,625 recreation areas at 423 projects (mostly lakes) and leasing an additional 1,867 sites to state or local park and recreation authorities or private interests.

The Corps hosts about 371
million visits each year at its lakes, beaches and other areas, and estimates that 25 million Americans (one in ten) visit a Corps project at least once a year to recreate. Of those totals, 16 million visits were hosted in the St. Louis District last year alone.

in Key West

 Updated Saturday At 9:50 PM

Our River Pictures and e-mail of the Day....Sunday.....  are from Gary and Judy Meinershagen when they were in Key West last week.

River Bill,

Hello again from Key West. When we were out deep sea fishing the other day, we found the "Barbara Ann" in the Harbor. Barbara Ann was the former boat of Danny and Barbara Wagner from St. Charles, Missouri. It still has "Port of St. Louis" on the back. What a thrill to see it down here in Key West. We went back to the harbor today and met Captain Wally, the present owner, and got aboard for a tour.

Attached are the pics we took.

Our River Picture and e-mail of the Day....Saturday ......  are from Capt'n Marty Haugh.

River Bill,

On October 20th the Mississippi Valley Chapter of the Antique Classic Boat Society held their annual fall classic boat cruise from Grafton to Alton and I just thought the river community should see just how well this "Girl of the Alton Lake" handles this big woody.

Dave wrote in his e-mail:

"JUST A FALL DAY ON THE RIVER.  DOES IT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS?      WHAT A SHAME MOST PEOPLE PUT THERE BOATS  AWAY SO SOON."

Bill:

For the second year, the "River Gods" were smiling on the MarineMax Port Arrowhead Cruise Club for their Fall Getaway to Cedar Hill restaurant on Sunday, October 29th. A procession of 13 boats with 50 members (some experiencing their first gathering) cruised up the Mississippi River for a fun-filled afternoon of trivia contests, great food (thanks to Kevin, Dave & Carrie), Halloween treats and tremendous laughter. This event was the finale to a great year filled with many festive occasions; all successfully coordinated by "our leader - J.D. Schmid." I have attached a few photos from the day's event. Steve Schulte Photography is responsible for all the great photos, more can be seen at steveschulte.com

If you would like to join us next year in your own Sea-Ray, please contact MarineMax.com.

The River Pictures on this Day In 2005 ----Friday----  were sent by two different boaters  just a few days apart from each other.   Harry Ragland, who had Monday's pic of the day, sent me the top picture and Robert "Slow Ride" Cope sent in the bottom picture.

I think that the two pictures really compliment each other because Harry's is a great shot of a large area the river, the fall colors and the bluffs with Principia College on top.......And.......Robert's picture is of the same area, only  a unique close-up shot of one of the rock formations that sort of lines up  with the steeple in the picture.

Our River Pictures and e-mail of the Day..........  are from Capt'n Toy Trice, who hails out of Woodland Marina.

Bill,
Made a quick trip down from Woodland to Alton to see the Nina. A gang of folks were onboard the Nina when I saw this Sunday afternoon.

Also, on the way down, the America was dredging the main channel near the Grafton Ferry landing (Missouri side). It made for a nice squeeze for the tow's to get through...

The River Pictures on this Day In 2006 -------- was of Gungadin, a Gulf 27 pilothouse that belongs to Harry Ragland.

Harry wrote in his e-mail:

"She comes out to play when the winds really start to blow. The pilothouse lets her sail long into the fall.

When something breaks 30 feet up your mast, you go up in a bossun's chair.  It can be a bit scary, but the view is excellent.  Here you can see many of the sailboats in Sioux Harbor."

November  1, 1834 in River History

The 1st published reference to poker as Mississippi riverboat game was made by Jonathan H. Green in his writings.   He wrote about the rules to the "cheating game," which was being played on the riverboats that traveled the Mississippi River..

He chose to name the game Poker after he realized it was the first such reference to the game and it was not mentioned in the current American Hoyle.

Update.. Water Resources Development Act  ............

According to a news article in this week's edition of the Waterways Journal the WRDA is on the President's desk and Saturday, November 3rd, is the deadline for him to sign the bill into law or veto the legislation.

The legislation has been on the President's desk since October 23rd and the bill will  automatically become law if he does not sign or veto the measure within the 10 days that he’s allowed to make a decision.

Lynn Tighe......  The on-line Alton Telegraph ran a very moving news article about the late Lynn Tighe, a businesswoman and avid boater..... and her yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer.

The article stated that Lynn made her husband, Tim, promise to keep her illness quiet because she didn’t want people to worry or take pity on her.   She never underwent chemotherapy nor any treatments during her illness.

“We had the greatest time,” Tim Tighe said. “It was the greatest year of my life.”
