One guy even brought a portable AC unit that kept us all cool. Thanks again and hope to see you soon.”

Mystery Solved .........

Hi Bill,

   This is BM (Best Man), I am sending this pic of the mystery wedding couple that MOH (Matron of Honor) sent you last week.

  It was a great time, as always, on the river.

The Ministry on the River .........  The on-line Alton Telegraph had an interesting article about the The Seamen’s Church Institute.  It's a non-denominational church for the sea mariner that was established in 1834, and it has evolved over the past 170 years to include the inland mariner.

   The Ministry on the River was established in 1998 and covers an area of the United States that stretches from St. Louis to New Orleans, Pittsburgh to Cairo, Illinois,  and from Houston across the Gulf of Mexico.

   The Ministry on the River is operational every day of the year.  When the inevitable things happen to the inland mariner they are there.

   The ministry even provides the use of a cell phone to those who do not have one and feel disconnected from their lives at home.   The church provides boat visits, counseling services and fellowship.

National... River News  ........

   Upper Ohio River near Ravenswood, W. Va

Bill;
  Do not know your policy on reporting accidents but here is one that happened over the weekend on the Upper Ohio River near Ravenswood, W. Va.

   What was this guy doing out on the river at 2 a.m. in a shut out fog with two children on board? The fog was so thick that all of the towboats were tied up. The towboat involved here was shuttling two barges between company docks a few miles apart. It appears the towboat pilot did everything he was supposed. Another newspaper article in the Charleston, W. Va., paper said the pilot blew his whistle like he was supposed to, but the pleasure boater steered right towards the whistle sound. Appears he had no idea whatsoever why the pilot blew the whistle. Another case for requiring licenses to operate pleasure boats.

Today and This Past Weekend in River History ------

June 22, 1884 in River History

   The riverboat Montana, the largest stern-wheel steamboat to ever travel the Missouri River, sank across from St. Charles after striking the pier of the railroad bridge.  She was a stern-wheeler with a wooden hull built in Pennsylvania in 1879.

   About 180 feet of the riverboat's hull is still intact today, lying underwater on the St. Louis Side of the Missouri River.  Parts of the sunken vessel still surface from time to time when the river level on the Missouri River gets real low. The bow was broken off and has not been located.

The Illinois River......... 1905 - 1915 Fish Harvest

  "From 1905 to 1915, more freshwater fish were harvested from the Illinois than from any other river in the United States except for the Columbia River. The river was once a major source of mussels for the shell button industry. Overfishing, habitat loss due to heavy siltation and pollution have eliminated most commercial fishing except for a small mussel harvest to provide shells to seed pearl oysters overseas."

 Wedding Announcement  .........

  After 20+ years, a "mystery couple" have decided to tie the "Nautical Knot". Yes, indeed, they are getting hitched right out in front of their Club House in the Dardenne Slough on Sunday, June 24th at approximately 1:00pm. Reverend Gary Meinershagen will be performing the long awaited nuptials, and his wife, Judy, is the Matron of Honor(MOH), and Mike Gilmor is the Best Man (BM).

Look for the boat named Good Vibrations, owned by John & Pat DiFatta, anchored in front of their club house (just a bit up river from the Yacht Club of St. Louis). The Happy Couple, as well as the wedding party will be on board. Drive by and give them a congratulatory honk, or feel free to anchor out and watch the ceremony.

After the ceremony, Good Vibrations will take the Bride & Groom and wedding party for a spin around the Island . . . . then it's time to "get this party started".

Congratulations to Mystery Couple #1!

Judy Meinershagen

 Why You Think You Might Be A River Boater

By Captain Dave Bullington of the boat "Whoz Yer Daddy"

  • You think $3/gal for gas is a great deal

  • You have $15k worth of electronic navigation gear but you never leave the Alton pool

  • You think "size" matters

  • You spend thousands of $$ on an activity you get to do a most weekends during a 6 month period each year

  • Your beer cooler might bigger than your gas tank

  • You can back a boat trailer but can't parallel park

  • You know what "SPF" stands for

  • You could, in a pinch, use your gold chain for an anchor (oops, that would be a "lake boater, sorry...)

  • You have used something called "bilge soap"

  • You use the terms "port" & "starboard" while driving your car

  • The first thing you look at in the paper each day is the river stage

  • And last but not least, you might be a boater if you ever had a fight with your spouse, stormed out of the house and spent the night on the boat!!

River Bill says.....I just had to add a few of my own to the list:

  • Your boat cost more than your first house !

  • The stereo in your boat is better than the one in your home !

  • You only have one engine in your car, but need two in your boat !

  • You know what a river dike is !  (Oops..another lake boater jab)

  • You Log-On to RiverBill's ........1st thing each morning !

Got any additional items to add to the list ?   Send them in and we will keep it going.

Sherri wrote in her e-mail:

Bill,

Here are some aerial shots of the horse shoe dykes.  It's obvious that some of the boaters can't see them on the water as well as we can see them from the air.  Watch out for them!

Sherri

RiverBill says...Thanks for the aerial pictures Sherri....Now we know exactly what this set of dikes look like from the air and their relation to river channel and the river banks.  This also shows how they are positioned to keep the main flow of water in the channel.

Tribute to Sharon Huebner Party was Last Saturday

Sharon Huebner

January 16, 1962 - May 4, 2007

Captain Mike Vitale, who hails out of the Duck Club in the cruiser INXS, sent us the following e-mail.

As most of you know the Saturday Night tribute to Sharon was a big success.

Our “River Family” came together for a toast (or 2 or 3) to the life of Sharon Huebner.

There where salutes of all kinds ranging from the usual massive quantities of food and drink, to an endless supply of Yeager Bombs, to the glow of battery operated high heels, and finally to the shouts of “ Sharon ” the new chant for a “Social Drink”.

Emotions ran high but so was the spirit.

Surprisingly, it was not only the females showing the emotion, there was more than one big, macho, boater man seen wiping tears from their eyes.

Personally,
It just felt like at any second Sharon would come bouncing up with a big smile and a hug to give, a laugh to share, and looking for her friends (or anyone available) to dance with.

She will be missed!

When we gave Steve the check he seemed genuinely surprised. How we managed to keep it a surprise was probably the biggest surprise of all. The final amount for Sharon ’s Fund was $4,300. Even thought it will not be used the way we hoped I am sure that it will be put to good use.

~ Thank You From Sharon ’s Fund! ~

Our River Pictures and e-mail of the Day ...... Sunday  ... is from Capt'n Robert Cope of the boat ..... Slow Ride.   Look what he kicked up on the beach 3 or 4 weeks ago.   (It got lost in my in-box.)

  Hey Bill,

Thought you might like this as a interesting pic of the day.......

  As I walked along the beach on Saturday, I kicked a large "rock" with my toe. Picked it up and immediately realized it was an old pipe. I like to think that one of the early river explorers, or a passenger on a paddle wheeler dropped this overboard long before my grandfather was born. It's made of bone, ivory, or sandstone and looks like at one time had some ornate carving on it.

Our River Pictures of the Day .........

Mike & Gill's Tiki Bar

   We were idling very slow up-river on Saturday afternoon in my boat around Two Branch Island, taking our time, enjoying the afternoon, looking at the scenery, the houses, the house trailers and other things along the river.

   A place along the Missouri side of the Mississippi River caught our attention...lots of folks were gathered, cooking, drinking and having fun.  The looked like a closed in carport, all outfitted with island decorations, tables, chairs, umbrellas, signs, BBQ pits and more.....quite the setup !

   About that time a gentleman at the party came down to the dock and ask us ask us to stop in for a while and meet everyone.... ....So we did !

   Mike introduced himself and then welcomed us to "Mike and Gill's Tiki Hut".  They had it all there....food, music, a nice island atmosphere, drinks and lots of friends.

  We got to meet everyone, had a drink, snapped a few pictures, exchanged some river stories, and even got to look at their book of pictures taken by the official photographer...Skull Terry.

  Good river people with plenty of hospitality !  Thanks Mike....Thanks everyone...We really enjoyed our visit.....RiverBill

Who are they ?
Mike is the guy under the Tiki Bar sign in the 2nd Picture from the top.

Skull Terry is in the bottom picture....taking our picture as we were leaving..

If you come down to the river
I bet you gonna find some people who live !

On Thursday the cutest little “houseboat” came down the river. It had tow knees and a bright red working sternwheel. The boat is 80 feet by 20 feet 4 inches and has a Perkins 6-354 diesel engine giving 135 horsepower. The Tuckers sold it in 1994 to David Engfer of St. Paul, Minnesota

 "The Columbia "

Dear River Bill,

You and your readers are going to like this!

The attached images where taken at Two Rivers Marina in the harbor and at the gas dock on Sunday morning June 10th, 2007.

Sorry for the poor quality, they were taken with my razor camera phone.

The images are of the "Columbia" hailing port of St. Paul, MN. Her
owners, whom I wish I had asked their names but didn't, are on their way to Kentucky Lake.

They told us that they had only owned her for a short time, she is
completely powered by her diesel stern paddle wheel and she is equipped with bow thrusters. Her max speed is about 10 miles per hour and has a 24 inch draft. She weighs 45 tons!

They were planning on staying on the Alton Pool Sunday evening possibly at Woodland Marina or around Two Branch.

If any of your readers are lucky enough to run into this awesome, boat and the great couple that owns her, I hope they contact you with more detailed information and more of the history on the boat.

Sincerely,

Mike Vessell

The 1st one was taken in 1967 of the lift itself with the Mississippi River in the back ground. The 2nd one was taken in 1969 atop of the look out point with my dad,Lloyd, a.k.a. "POPDORN" and my youngest sister Carol. Last, but not least is again atop lookout point, river in background, my mom, Nancy, and Carol again, 1969. Where was I you ask? Bill,

Just had to share this with all of you! We had a great weekend on Table Rock Lake with some great wooden boat enthusiasts just like us!! We wanted to share this GREAT experience with all of you. The boat in the picture on the front page is US! Please read the article. There was approx. 30 boats there from the 30's all the way to the new wooden boat we had the pleasure to go in! Saturday morning we all cruised the lake and had a great lunch at Cedar Lodge. What a sight seeing all the old "woodies" all together.....The local lake people were in total awe at the sight of these beautiful nostalgic wooden boats as they engulfed upon their beautiful lake. One local told us it was "breathtaking!"
The Heartland Chapter for the ACBS sponsored this spectacular event and we were welcomed graciously. We had the honor of meeting so many wonderful people who like us, share the love of the wooden boats and their history.
We have many more pictures to share..

  Hymn #365....... was sent in by Kathleen Williams of Driftwood Designs

It's an e-mail chain originating from a Galen G. Mitchell .  Read on !

A minister was completing a Temperance sermon.

With great emphasis he said, "If I Had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river." With even greater emphasis he said, " ! And if I had All the wine in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river." And then finally, shaking his fist in the air, he Said, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river."

Sermon complete, he sat down.

The song leader stood very cautiously and announced

With a smile, nearly laughing, "For our closing song,

Let us sing Hymn #365, "Shall We Gather at the River."

More Flying Carp Video and Commentary from our Friend Larry Demko........

Bill:

This thought: Carp Baseball... As you drive on the river a "designated hitter" takes a Louisville Slugger and gets three swings to hit a carp.
After that he/she is out...Next batter...

May sound cruel, but if I lived near Peoria and couldn't boat because of so many carp jumping (and I've heard that), I wouldn't be happy. Imagine water-skiing ... or tubing!

One of the comments on YouTube was that Asian Carp are edible. This contributor said: "Can you say McCarp?"

I wondered: Do eagles eat Asian Carp? The carp might be too big... Put those eagles to work eradicating Asian Carp!

At any rate, these things are a real danger to the ecosystem in rivers and lakes..

Those are my thoughts this morning...however bad they are!

Today it's a river story from tjis day in 2006 by Capt'n Rick Sievers

Captain Crash

Another great river story by

Rick Sievers

A River Story From This Day in 2006 ------

     Long ago, we used to have a harbor neighbor that we affectionately called "Captain Crash". We so nicknamed him because quite frankly any docking or launching he and his crew could walk away from was a good one. We didn't really blame him, he was getting rather old and his boating days were getting fewer in number quickly, but he scared the hell out of us on a regular basis. The worst scare was as follows: Back then, my wife and I had an old 27' Bayliner with an aft cabin and no air-conditioning yet. On a particular 4th of July night, we were on the boat and it was late. The summer air was like paste and hung on our bodies like a cheap suit. We had been trying to sleep but couldn't so my wife went up on deck and sat in a chair for a bit while I stayed below. After a short time I heard my wife knock on the hatch; "Rick, Captain Crash is coming in" My reply; "That's nice dear" A few seconds later she tapped again. "He's on fire" Needless to say I was up on deck in half a tick. Sure enough, here he came looking like a coal fired locomotive from the 1880's right up the middle of the harbor. I thought; "surely he's not going to come in like that", but with his usual aplomb he pulled right into his slip next to us with a wham that would heel over the Queen Mary 10°. I grabbed a knife and informed my wife that it is entirely possible that I may have to cut the ropes and we'll have to continue our delightful sleepless night elsewhere while we watch our dock burn down!  Smoke quickly filled the area and was so dense we literally could not make out his boat. All we saw and heard was silhouettes illuminated by his cabin lights moving about quickly, and muffled voices in the smoke. It looked like an Indian war camp gone amok. Then, as quick as it started, the smoke cleared away revealing the vestige of his boat and crew. I suppose the shocked visage of my wife, and me standing there with a big knife in hand like Davy Crockett ready for a fight looked as startling to him as well. "Oh, hi -lotta smoke huh"? was all he could rasp out to me. Then, with a trail of smoke still hanging in the dense summer air like some kind of nebulous demon, he and his wife and crew got out, marched up the gang plank, hopped in the car and vanished into the night! All my wife and I could do is stand there with incredulous looks on our faces like two cartoon characters that just had a bank safe dropped on their heads from a second story balcony! Needless to say, there was to be no sleep that night. I stayed up the rest of the night watching for some conflagration to rekindle on his wooden boat until the sun was well up, and my eyes were the color of the Bloody Mary I was now thinking about, but never occurred, fortunately! As it turns out, the problem was that he had an ancient marine radio, the kind that took up half of the dash panel, and it shorted out, igniting the wiring and immediate area behind it. They simply beat out the fire with their hands and rolled up cloths. I was amazed at how much smoke had been generated by what had burned. Not long after that, as an epilogue, the old gent was selling his boat and was afraid someone would siphon his gas so he pulled off the hose from the gas filler port. Having then forgotten this, he was going to show the boat to a prospective customer and proceeded to pour 15 gallons of gas into his bilge! As you may suspect, his automatic bilge pump was in perfect working order and commenced to discharge all of it into the harbor! Then as fate would have it, here came another harbor resident down the gangplank with his obligatory cigarette hanging out of his mouth. An onrush of panicked boaters ushered him back up the plank and "de-cigaretted" him, much to his dismay. Every boat in the harbor contributed their supply of dishwashing soap to the cause and another calamity was avoided while we all enjoyed a harbor full of bubbles.

And that is why boats and docks need fire extinguishers, and boaters need another drink

Update..... Boat Incident On Dardenne Slough ------   I heard from various sources and some calls over the marine radio that there was a boat fire on Dardenne Slough near the Yacht Club of St. Louis on about 5 PM Sunday evening.

 I received a couple of e-mails today with better information:

Marty Gamache was right there helping out and he was kind enough to share the experience with all of us:

Bill,

There was an incident with smoke (no fire). It was between Woodland and Lake Center .

I noticed a small cutty that appeared to have shut down quickly as I was passing. Then notice a small amount of smoke coming from the cabin area. We pulled up and told the couple on board to get off. There was some confusion and panic at the time, so we had to again persuade them.

“Drop the anchor and get off now” came the call. – This time the couple did so. Smoke continued to come from the vessel while we made calls to various emergency personnel.

By the time the Water Patrol got to us, the smoke had stopped. The Boat owner (Mike) believed the source to be electrical. I would agree, based on the smell. The Water Patrol was leaning toward over heating.

No one was hurt thank God, but the boat would no longer start. The Water Patrol towed it to the Yacht Club and we gave the lady (forgot her name) a ride and had a nice little chat on the way. It seems Mike had some electrical worked done on the boat a week ago and this was the first time out since. – I’m betting heavy on the electric being the source.

They seemed like real nice folks. I wish them good luck. Hell of a way to meet people, but that’s the way it is on the river.

Take care

Marty Gamache

  Just another weekend on the river, June 2nd, 2007------

Capt'n Darryll, who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis updated his website with the weekend's events.

Darryll wrote in his e-mail:

With the weather being a little iffy on Saturday (our first try at going out we got poured on before we even got out of the marina) we decided to do a little "Harbor Hopping" and visit some friends we haven't seen since last season. Stopped by Gary and Kathleen's dock at Lake Center and as usual a party was forming! You may remember Gary from the ";Where's Gary" page, seems his mom in Indiana checks my website to see what her son is up to! Well, after a few libations, some wonderful food and a "Dock Party", Ken and Aimee invited all of us on their 410 Sea Ray for a "Sunset Cruise". Great friends, great food and a great time was had by all. Many thanks to everybody for the wonderful hospitality!

Hey, Bill,

Seen Tom & Lou on the river this weekend.  They had a twin boat partying with them.  One of these boats are a 1950 and the other is a 1953.  "Oldies but Goodies"!

Thanks Sherri

~~~^~~~~~^~~~~~^~~~~~^~~~~~^~~~
Our River Picture of the Day from 2005 ------ was an aerial photo taken by Steve Schulte a few weeks ago   looking up river from Winfield Dam .  Look at all of the sand !  This looks like it could be the area around the UMR 242 mile marker, right above the Lock and Dam.
~~~^~~~~~^~~~~~^~~~~~^~~~~~^~~~

Our River Picture of the Day from 2005 ------ was actually a "Historical Graph" of the   Water Temperature of Alton Pool from Jan 2004 until May 2005.    We had some questions on the Message Board a week or so ago about the river water temperature.  The person wrote "Wondering what the average temperature of the river was last summer"  and "When will it get warmer ?"

  I wrote an evasive answer to the reply because I didn't have any data on actual river water temperatures.   Well, the head of RiverBill's Research Department, Capt'n GAry Bowers,  seen the reply and got his anchor rope all in a knot.    He insisted that we could do better and off he went on another research project. Oh Buoy!

   He contacted the Corps of Engineers and requested some historical water temperature data.  You know what ~ he go it!  ........All the way back to 2004 for both Winfield and Alton Dams.

  He plotted the data and began studying it when he noticed that there was a difference in water temperature at the two dams.  4 degrees on average.  So we can say that the water warms about one degree for every 10 miles it flows in Alton Pool !

( Now why is that ? )

    So when will the water get warmer ?  It is getting warmer each week until a peak temperature is reached sometime in mid - July.  It should get to be about 80 degrees if this year is anything like 2004..

   What was the average temperature last summer ?   The average at Winfield was 77.2 degrees and at Alton it was 80.4 degrees for the months of June, July and August.

More Asian Carp .........

Take  A Few Minutes and Watch This One

To See How Bad This Is Getting

Bill:

Saw that you signed up The Rotten Apple. Congrats!

Somehow the subject of Asian carp came up yesterday. So, my sone went searching. We found a a number of videos on YouTube, but this one is troubling...

Watch the part where the researchers shock the water with electricity (apparently from a generator). It's alarming.

Maybe we ought to have a Asian Carp roundup...you know..like Asian Carp Saturday (or Friday or Monday...). Bring out a generator or two, give prize for the boat that brings in the largest number..

Perhaps Asian Carp is a delicacy somewhere ...and we can find processing plant that will turn the carp into "Tuna of the River"...

Here it is...
