Stop Building The Levees ........ The on-line Post Dispatch had a very good editorial in yesterday's edition written by Timothy Kusky  titled......

"Wake-up Call Is Sounding:  We Must Stop Building Levees".

The editorial describes how the people around St. Louis barely escaped disaster this past May as flood waters rose to nearly "Great Flood proportions."

We are fortunate that those levees up river failed, because it spread the high water out across the natural flood plains, as it has for thousands of years, thus lowering the water level in the river. It could have been 1993 again !
"There is an important lesson here. If the failure of levees upstream prevents flooding downstream, then the opposite also must also be true: The construction of new levees raises water levels downstream from them, causing more severe flooding than if the levees had not been there in the first place. "......

LOST .......... Lost on Sunday ( 5/27/07)  somewhere in the slough by Grafton Harbor... .a very large white ( kinda dirty) fender tied to a plastic "j" fender hook that obviously doesn't work that good , hence it falling off while everybody was taking off during Sunday's 5:00PM rain.

If anybody has found it, I would be glad to pick up.

Thanks so much.

Let's Go Boating in The Pool !

Darryll wrote;

Growing up my dad always had a boat and we owned Blue Springs Pool in Fenton.  So, one day, probably over a few cold ones, my dad decided to put our boat in the pool.  With the help of my Uncle Buss and several of our regular customers, the motor was removed, fence taken down and the boat and motor carried into the pool where it was re-assembled!  If I recall correctly the boat was a 15' wood Delta with about a 40 horsepower Mercury.  This is the same boat I learned to drive in at Lake of the Ozarks.  Here's a couple of pics of the adventure.  In the starboard side pic I am the one standing in the pass through with my uncle driving.  In the port side pic my Dad is driving and I am the on the one in back with the paddle.

Enjoy, Darryll

Deer Stand Stolen ......

River Bill,

Was wondering if you could pass this along..

We have some thieves up on the river.  We hunt on the islands (Dardenne) and a friend of mine had his deer stands stolen.  We have an idea who it is, and have contacted our Water Patrol and conservation friends to see if they could make a note of it.. because of the trouble with them in the past, the ones suspected, said they claimed that part of the island we hunt, and no one else is going to move in,...but ..if you could pass this along and let our other hunting friends up there know, it would be appreciated...   Nothing is safe up on the islands ..

Thanks for a great web site and have a great Memorial Weekend.....

1929 on the Mississippi River

Greg wrote in his letter;

Hello Bill,
These are the pictures I have told you about. They were taken in the Summer of 1929.  The one on the beach (top) was taken right across from what is now the Duck Club, facing down towards Grafton.  You can see the bluffs in the distant background.  The second guy from the right (sitting down) is my grandfather, Earl Gruenenfelder.  It was his boat.

The second picture(bottom), with the boat running, has my grandfather sitting up with my great-great grandmother towards the front, my great grandfather, Edmond Gruenefelder is in the middle wearing a hat, and my great grandmother in the rear.  It was taken in the little slough below the Duck Club.  They had a club house below North Shore from the late 20's that was eventually destroyed in the flood of '93.    I still have the anchor of this boat in my living room.

Hope you enjoy these,

Thank You... from Steve Huebner, Glenda Boyle & Ray DeClue

Bill,

Steve & I were talking and we wanted to put something on the web page to say “Thank You” to all of our River Family for all they have done. I came up with a poem that kind of covers it but then again there is nothing that Steve or Ray & I could ever do to show how much we appreciated the love & support that we felt during the time Sharon was so very sick and right up to the end. We also know that all of the love & support will continue throughout the years to come because that is just how our River Family is. We are blessed and proud to be a part of this wonderful family.

What could ever be said
To any one of you,
To ever show our ‘Thanks”
For all you have done.

What words would be most proper
To let you somehow know,
How much you are truly appreciated
For the support you all have shown.

What actions could ever be enough
To prove just how we feel,
For offering your love & support
When we are all trying to heal.

So we will end with ‘THANK YOU ALL’
For being there for us,
In our hearts you will forever remain,
Thank you all for caring about us.

Remember Yesterday's Pic Of The Day ?.......  I e-mailed Dave and ask him questions about the kite he took the pictures from.... If he owned a boat...etc....etc.

Dave replied with the e-mail below ....... It's a remarkable method to get a picture !

Hello Bill:

Actually, it is a kite. Thus, no power. I'm holding the end of the kite string on Piasa Island.
The camera is remote controlled and actually hung from the kite string, not the kite.
I have a few photos around Alton, too.
If someone wants info on Kite Aerial Photography, they can email me at d-a-v-e@swbell.net.

I live in Ballwin, Missouri but I own a cabin on Piasa Island. One of the few left.

Yep a few boats; a kayak, sailboard, Seadoo GTX, Sunfish, Hobie 14, Hobie 16 Turbo, Macgregor 26, and part owner of a john boat and bass boat.

Hope to see you on the river too. I went sailing yesterday near Alton. Very few people out.

Due to flooding conditions, the Missouri State Water Patrol is asking everyone not to boat on the Missouri River nor the Mississippi River in the St. Louis area south of Melvin Price Locks and Dam at Alton, IL.

The Mississippi River, north of the Melvin Price Locks and Dam at Alton. IL, is unaffected by the flood conditions on the Missouri River. The area is “OK” for boating, swimming and recreational use. The water is slightly high due to normal spring flood conditions.

Lou was out on the Mississippi River north of Alton this past Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday and seen only slight debris in the water. Nothing major.

The Science of Flood Predictions ------  According to an article in the on-line Post Dispatch..... The Missouri River is still on the rise, but the water level forecast are coming down.

The reason the river level forecast was lowered is because of all the farm levees that have failed upriver.   This caused the on-coming wall of floodwater to disperse over a wider area and relieve impending high water levels in downstream areas, such as St. Charles.

The article describes how flood predictions are derived from flood models and the many variables that are included in such a process.

Click here to read the story in the on-line STLtoday.com

FYI:  The article has a good picture of the Lewis and Clark statue, on the St. Louis Riverfront, almost totally engulfed by the Mississippi River flood waters.

Editorial... Give Them Back.......

According to on-line article in Thursday's STLtoday.com.....the Missouri River is forecasted to crest at St. Charles at 32.9 feet on Tuesday. That's about 8 feet over flood stage, but it's 4 feet lower than was forecasted earlier in the week.

Now that's good news, but the reason for the change is because of all of the failed farm levees up-river.. The failed levees allowed the "wall of floodwater" that was coming down the river to disperse over a wider area and relieve impending high water levels in down- stream communities !
The levees were built to protect the rich farmland, but the farmland is located in the floodplains of the Missouri River. Levees cutoff the floodplains from the river and just cause more water problems in downstream areas.

Wake up !
I think it's time to quit building new levees ...let flood plains be flood plains ! When an existing levee fails.....we should strongly consider giving that land back to the river !

IEPA Investigates Grafton's Mudslide------  According to an article in the on-line Alton Telegraph.... the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is looking into last week's mudslide.  During a rainstorm the mudslide sent mud, rock and even a portable toilet down the hill in front of Timber Ridge Condo's, across Main Street towards Grafton Harbor and Illinois River.  It's the second slope failure at that site in the past few months.

Little John's Season Opener ......

Hi Bill

I know it has been a while since you have heard from us, but until now, we have been unsure of a lot of directions.

There were about three days, in our team and family, of unknowing whether Teri was dead or alive.

After the heart wrenching devastation, of other people so very close to us, we are calling Teri Ruf's brain aneurysm a nasty INCONVIENCE.
WE WILL RACE.
ASHY RUF WILL DRIVE KWITCHABITCHEN.
TERI RUF WILL BE THERE TO CHEER ASHLY ON.

In three months time, Teri has done remarkable, she still has her work cut out for her, for total recovery, but we all know that if anyone can, it will be Teri.

It is completely overwhelming, to me, to be able to make that statement.

Now lets get down to business.

  • Our season will start with a television interview with Ashly, at Little Johns, on Mat 12th. by St. Louis Motor Sports Review.

  • On May 19th and 20th, will be racing on Lake Wappapello in Poplar Bluff Mo.

  • On May 26th. We will have Little Johns Hog Roast

  • On June 2nd. And 3rd., we will race on Ky. Lake

  • On June 9th. and 10th. will be racing in Creve Coeur Mo.
I know the Contrios Champaign Brunch is on Sunday, but you can see us on Sat.

After our INCONVIENCE, our budget is on the thin side, but we will GET ER DONE
If anyone would like to help in any way, or simply follow what we are doing, please check out our website, at www.LITTLEJOHNSINC.com

New Heights Proposed For Nutwood Levee ...... According to a news article in the on-line Post Dispatch.......  Federal and state officials are considering increasing the height of the Nutwood Levee by 2 1/2 feet.    The 11-mile-long levee is located along the Illinois River just north of St. Louis in the Illinois counties of Jersey and Greene.  It protects thousands of acres of farmland and a state highway from the floodwater.
When the flood water topped the levee in 1993, it covered 10,000 acres of farmland and closed a four-mile stretch of Illinois Route 16/100.

The second picture is of Captain Joe Stork, Sandy's father and original owner of the houseboat.  The bottom picture of Ma Belle engulfed by this year's flood water was taken this April by Capt'n Robert Cope.

Ma Belle was a one of a kind boat in her day!  Designed by Capt'n Joe Stork and the East Grand Boat Yard.  It had all of the latest features of it's time... everything from a CO2 system to a 110 volt hot water heater and 3kw generator.

40 feet in length, weighing in at 20 tons with a 86 horsepower diesel engine.    Her 300 gallon fuel tank would enable the houseboat to travel 1200 miles.

The boat has been featured in the Globe Democrat, National Geographic and in the magazine "River Currents".

Now it sits in this harbor off of Dardenne Slough rusting away in the mud !

2,000 HP Outboard Inflatable Boat ------ Marty Haugh sent us a picture of a 2,000 horsepower inflatable boat used to run drugs across the English Channel.   An internet search produced the picture and an interesting article on it.     The boat had eight outboards rated at at 250 HP each.  The low profile made it hard to detect on radar and 70 miles per hour made it hard to catch, so the English brought in a special helicopter to catch the drug runners.

Commercial Ballast Water.... Possible Impact On Recreational Boating ------

A court ruling intended to stop the growing problem of invasive species entering the waters of the United States from the ballast water of international commerce ships has the potential of causing problems for the recreational boater too.

If the decision is left unchanged every recreational boat in the United States that discharges such things as bilge water, deck runoff and engine cooling water could be subject to the new regulations and be required to obtain a special National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) permit !

Bill,

We've had some baby eagles hatch down here on the Meramec River in Fenton. You can just see the ugly little one pokin his head up.

It sure would be nice to kayak the Mississippi if the river ever goes down.

Mark

One of the River Picture Of The Day  in 2005 ...... was of the Cajun Cabin   that is owned by Gary and Judy Meinershagen.  Gary and Judy boat out of The Yacht Club of St. Louis in the houseboat...."Beads Beads Beads".  I was driving past their club house a couple of years ago and it seemed to be sitting there glowing in the sun... and.... wanting of me to stop and take it's picture.     So I did.

You have to agree that because of the color, this place really stands out.      The cabin is located on Lehmond Island and was  built in 1959 by Gary's father and uncle.  A person can spot the cabin from the upper end of Dardenne Slough at around the UMR 227.5 mile marker.  It sets  2 or 3 houses in from the slough.   Lehmond Island has almost become part of the mainland these days at normal water levels, but when  the water comes up a bit, it is an island.  When the water gets to high, Gary and Judy have to go in by small boat, just like they do in the  Louisiana Bayou Cajun Country ~ ~  hence~ ~ "The Cajun Cabin". The Cajun colors were artfully chosen by Judy ~ ~ Good Job Judy!      If you are ever in the neighborhood Gary says  "Stop in and say hello".
