"Wake-up Call Is Sounding: We Must Stop Building Levees".
The editorial describes how the people around St. Louis barely escaped disaster this past May as flood waters rose to nearly "Great Flood proportions."
We are fortunate that those levees up river failed, because it spread the high
water out across the natural flood plains, as it has for thousands of years,
thus lowering the water level in the river. It could have been 1993

They were sent in by Captain Darryll Weil, who hails out of the yacht Club of St. Louis in the cruiser "After You". Darryll has a good story about boating with his dad in the swimming pool at Blue Springs Lodge many years ago..
Let's Go Boating in The Pool !
Darryll wrote;
Growing up my dad always had a boat and we owned Blue Springs Pool in Fenton. So, one day, probably over a few cold ones, my dad decided to put our boat in the pool. With the help of my Uncle Buss and several of our regular customers, the motor was removed, fence taken down and the boat and motor carried into the pool where it was re-assembled! If I recall correctly the boat was a 15' wood Delta with about a 40 horsepower Mercury. This is the same boat I learned to drive in at Lake of the Ozarks. Here's a couple of pics of the adventure. In the starboard side pic I am the one standing in the pass through with my uncle driving. In the port side pic my Dad is driving and I am the on the one in back with the paddle. Enjoy, Darryll ~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~^~~ |

Boating Safety Is A Key Ingredient To Memorial Day Fun------ Memorial Day weekend is considered by many boaters as the unofficial beginning of the boating season and a great opportunity to plan that first family outing of the year. The Missouri State Water Patrol reminds boaters that the first step to ensuring a safe day on the water is to be a responsible boat operator. With the large number of boaters that will be on our waterways this holiday weekend, safety must be a priority for all boaters. ...........click here to continue reading rest of the Missouri State Water Patrol News Release N07070033 |

River Bill, Was wondering if you could pass this along..
We have some thieves up on the river. We hunt on the islands (Dardenne) and a friend of mine had his deer stands stolen. We have an idea who it is, and have contacted our Water Patrol and conservation friends to see if they could make a note of it.. because of the trouble with them in the past, the ones suspected, said they claimed that part of the island we hunt, and no one else is going to move in,...but ..if you could pass this along and let our other hunting friends up there know, it would be appreciated... Nothing is safe up on the islands .. Thanks for a great web site and have a great Memorial Weekend..... Chuck.. |

1929 on the Mississippi River
Greg wrote in his letter;
Hello Bill, The second picture(bottom), with the boat running, has my grandfather sitting up with my great-great grandmother towards the front, my great grandfather, Edmond Gruenefelder is in the middle wearing a hat, and my great grandmother in the rear. It was taken in the little slough below the Duck Club. They had a club house below North Shore from the late 20's that was eventually destroyed in the flood of '93. I still have the anchor of this boat in my living room.
Hope you enjoy these,

May 21, 1804 in River History ------ Lewis and Clark launched their expedition from St. Charles in a keelboat at 3:30 pm. St. Charles was the last established American town they would visit for more than two and a half years.

The Missouri River dumps into the Mississippi downstream of Alton, IL .... so the flood waters are not affecting the river levels in the upper part of Alton Pool where most St. Louis area boaters go.. The river levels at Winfield and Grafton are below "flood stage" right now and are predicted to drop all week ! There are lots of beaches out and there is very little debris floating.

Hi Bill
After our INCONVIENCE, our budget is on the thin side, but we will GET ER DONE |
|
|
|
For those of you unfamiliar with this it started out as a Customer Appreciation Day but has evolved into one of the bigger parties on the River. It goes on pretty much all day and into the night. They ask that you bring a covered dish and a donation of usually ten bucks to cover the cost of the bands and hog (cooked the night before by Steve Huebner).
Bill and Linda Mixon will also be cooking stuff up. |

guessing that it was taken from what I think is the lower, down stream end of
Royal landing. Iowa island is top center of pic? Taken summer of 1961, me

The top 2 pictures are from Sandy (Stork) Goeken, the original owner's daughter. The top one was taken at the boat's launching in 1951. The second picture is of Captain Joe Stork, Sandy's father and original owner of the houseboat. The bottom picture of Ma Belle engulfed by this year's flood water was taken this April by Capt'n Robert Cope. Ma Belle was a one of a kind boat in her day! Designed by Capt'n Joe Stork and the East Grand Boat Yard. It had all of the latest features of it's time... everything from a CO2 system to a 110 volt hot water heater and 3kw generator. 40 feet in length, weighing in at 20 tons with a 86 horsepower diesel engine. Her 300 gallon fuel tank would enable the houseboat to travel 1200 miles. The boat has been featured in the Globe Democrat, National Geographic and in the magazine "River Currents". Now it sits in this harbor off of Dardenne Slough rusting away in the mud ! ~~~^~~~~~^~~~~~^~~~~~^~~~
Keep your anchor right where it's at for more pictures and info about Ma Belle.

You have to agree that because of the color, this place really stands out. The cabin is located on Lehmond Island and was built in 1959 by Gary's father and uncle. A person can spot the cabin from the upper end of Dardenne Slough at around the UMR 227.5 mile marker. It sets 2 or 3 houses in from the slough. Lehmond Island has almost become part of the mainland these days at normal water levels, but when the water comes up a bit, it is an island. When the water gets to high, Gary and Judy have to go in by small boat, just like they do in the Louisiana Bayou Cajun Country ~ ~ hence~ ~ "The Cajun Cabin". The Cajun colors were artfully chosen by Judy ~ ~ Good Job Judy! If you are ever in the neighborhood Gary says "Stop in and say hello". |
