Greg wrote in his e-mail:

Bill,

Here's 2 pictures combined, both were taken yesterday (28 Aug 2006).

Glenn is on his way to New Orleans.

Greg is going to Miami in a couple days, (waiting on better weather).

We hope to be home for the Holiday weekend?

Greg

Greg called me yesterday evening to chat a bit, give me some more info about the pictures and tell me more about their trips.  He is piloting a 90' SkipperLiner that he picked in Annapolis, Md. for delivery to Miami, Florida.  Yesterday evening, he was waiting in Delray, Florida to see what the approaching storm was going to do.  Oh yeah...Greg said that Julia Roberts got married aboard this particular boat !

Glenn is delivering  a 66' Choey Lee to New Orleans...where it will be loaded on to a ship and transported through the Panama Canal to San Diego, Ca.  You might have noticed this boat setting at Port Charles earlier this year.

OK ....I had to ask Greg what the heck is Bobby's Fish Camp ?

Greg told me that it's a place on the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway that is known to boat travelers as a place to stop for fuel and dinner....And... Yes...it has an all you can eat buffet !  Campgrounds, boat ramps , etc.

RiverBill says...Good luck to both Greg and Glenn...Hope you get back home for the holiday ....And most of all ...Be safe !!

Doug, from the boat "Gin Bucket II" sent me some pictures of Tip's latest return to the river.  Some of you may remember Tipper from Woodland Marina and the boat "Tip One".  Well, last year when he was in town, we did sort of an impromptu "Get Your Picture Taken With Tip" at Sharky's Cove.  Because some people questioned all the hoopla surrounding Tip's visits from Florida, Doug and some friends had T-Shirts made saying "It's All About Tip" and surprised Tipper with them while anchored in Two Branch.  Here's a couple of pictures of the occasion from Captain Gin Bucket, I mean Doug.

The Winneberg Marina  ------ We received an e-mail from Chuck Lanczlowski, the owner and Harbor Master of the, soon to be constructed, Winneberg Marina that will be located just upriver from the Golden Eagle Ferry at UMR 229.5.

Chuck wrote in his e-mail:

Bill,

The Winneberg Marina will be located at mile 229.5 on the Mississippi .  It will contain 174 slips, constructed in two phases of 84 and 90 slips, respectively.  Phase 1 should commence in October 2006, with occupation available starting in early spring of ’07, and the Grand Opening scheduled for the 4th of July ’07.  Phase 2 will start directly after that.  The Marina will be contained in a jetty and breakwater system.  The Jetty will lay from the Illinois shore out into the river 325 feet, curved slightly downstream with a circular terminus 50 feet in diameter.  The floating breakwater will run downstream from that.  Phase 1 will see about 800 feet of breakwater, and Phase 2 will complete another 1,000 feet of floating breakwater.  There will be three launch ramps at the facility, a ship’s store, ample parking, as well as covered and uncovered dry storage. Late Phase 1 or early Phase 2 will see the addition of both gas and diesel fuel.  The waterfront and old quarry areas will be groomed and a Winneberg Boating Club recreational center constructed.

Your readers will be please to know that hydraulics studies show that we will have no impact on the bottom structures around Two Brach Island, nor will there be any effect down river past the Marina itself.  The recreational areas currently enjoyed will be unaffected by the jetty, and we plan to operate in harmony with the River and all of those who enjoy it.  We hope we can supply some convenience to local boaters and enhance everyone’s enjoyment of river activities.

We are holding information sessions on Saturday and Sunday, September 2 and 3, over Labor Day weekend, to anyone who has questions about the Marina .  We will be available near the Marina site at the river bank, and at the Winneberg Community Clubhouse.  There will be displays of dock construction and power distribution equipment as well as engineering diagrams of the Marina, jetty and breakwater systems, and the dock and slip layouts.

Due to extremely high interest and expectations, we have agreed to take Pre-Construction deposits and reservations on slips starting on the 2nd.  Pre-Construction pricing will be available for about 30 days, until we start construction in October.  We’ll have all of the details and pricing information available at the Marina site and the Clubhouse.  Please see the attached informational flier for times.

Any questions can be directed to me at clanczkowski@winnebegrmarina.com

Regards,

Chuck Lanczkowski

No Trespassing....Beware ------ We received the following e-mail from Charles  about the No-Trespassing signs that have started to show up on some sandbars in the upper part of Pool 26...........Beware !

Charles wrote in his e-mail:

River Bill,

Had our weekend ruined last Saturday ( Aug 19th ) while boating up on the North end of the Alton Pool.  We were anchored 30 yds off shore on an un-named island just south of Cedar Hill on the Illinois side (probably upper Hat).  We had swam there with many other boaters all summer long as it was a popular island. Our children have enjoyed the beach as well as hundreds of other people. Un-known to us, this was a private island and the owner decided to file a trespassing complaint the Tuesday before.  So there we were like all the weekends before just minding our own business enjoying the day.  At 5pm, my wife waded up to the shore to get a picture of our kids playing at the waters edge.  Her reward was a trespassing arrest with a mandatory court appearance from the Illinois water conservation.  There was a small sign posted 4O yds inland which had never been there before.  We were not drunk and causing trouble.  My wife was merely standing at the waters edge taking a picture.  It ruined the spirit of boating.  All boaters of the Alton Pool be careful where you beach.  It just might land you in court.

Charles

River Bill

Please warn boaters not to set foot on Hat Island.  On Aug. 19, I unknowingly sat in a beach chair 5' from the river's edge and earned a $100 citation from the Illinois Department of Conservation for the crime.  The officers were unable to show me a "No Trespassing" sign from the location, but reassured me that there was one posted upriver.  Let everyone know that I have already made a "donation", additional "donations" are not needed.

The officers informed me that you can stand in shallow water, but do not set foot on shore.

Our River Pictures of the Day  ------ are from the Jamaica Daze Party this past Saturday !   These are just a few of the many more to come.

The weather was good on Friday, when we were setting up...Thanks everyone !  Then the storm came through that evening.  The wind, the rain and lighting....boats broke loose, decorations came down and some boats were damaged....it got real intense for a while, but we survived !

Saturday was a perfect day.  Started out a little cloudy, but then the sun came out and the party goers started arriving.  The cooks started cooking chicken and corn on the cob early and didn't stop until late in the afternoon.  It was sea of boats...boats everywhere !

One of the big events was a Jamaica Daze wedding...Sue Schneider and Chuck Beach tied the knot !  Congrats Chuck and Sue.

We had contests and gave away prizes from our sponsors all day long.

As the daylight faded into evening....the band Rail started the playing rock and roll, followed up by the band named Stripper Named Phoebe.

It was great party....A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone that made it possible !

Our River Picture And E--mail of the Day  ------ is from Captain Darryll Weil, who hails out of Woodland Marina in the cruiser "After You".    Darryll sent us an email about the rag boat races in Evansville, IL this past weekend.

Darryll wrote:

Went with Big Dick's Halfway Inn Motorsports and Little John's Marine Service to the Drag Boat Races in Evansville IL. Little John's boat "Kwitchabitchin" lost in the first round of eliminations. The other boat put a hole shot on Mike Buerck good enough to win even though the times were identical, 9.11 seconds. Brutus Utter in "Dick Tater" failed to start at the line in it's first round and then ran an exhibition / grudge match to lay down the fastest time and speed of the day, a 6.52 second, 181.74 mile per hour pass beating the other boat by more than a full second!  Of course the crew chief, Mike Murray, took the leash off the motor and let it go all out, kind of a win or break mode!

Ashly Ruf made some exhibition passes with her waverunner and then on Saturday her parents, Keith and Teri Ruf, presented her with her 16th birthday present, a stock eliminator flat bottom!  Maureen and I picked the boat up at Little John's and hauled it down there for the surprise.

I didn't get as much of a chance to take pictures as I was towing "Kwitchabitchin" in and out and the view from the ramps way down past the finish line isn't that great but I got a few to give you a feel of the weekend.

Let's Be Careful Out There ! ------  I received the following e-mail from one of our readers about a near collision this past weekend between a boat and a couple of young kids on a jet ski !

Saturday afternoon, I was idling through the 2 branch slough and there were 2 kids (about 12-14 yrs old) riding on a jet ski and pulling a 3rd on a tube.  Both of the riders were sitting facing fwd but both were looking back at the tube rider.  They came around a wide turn and were heading straight for my bow at about 30mph.  The tube rider saw it coming and let go about 50' out, and the driver finally heard my horn over the jetski motor about 30' off my bow. Fortunately, he turned the right way when he looked fwd. About 1/2 second more and at least one of these kids would have been dead.

The driver apologized and I told him to have his passenger turn around and watch the tube and let the driver drive.  But, I think it shook them up as much as it did me.  As I was leaving I watched them creep very slowly back to the sandbar.

his really scared the crap out of me, and I'm sure all 3 of those kids learned a big lesson the hard way, but the parents that let them ride without proper instruction almost lost a child because of it.

RiverBill says....

First of all, lets be thankful no one was hurt and this near collision was avoided !

Parents....Teach the children to be responsible boaters when driving a jet ski.  Enroll them in a boater training class.. And go with them.  Teach them to be conscientious boaters.

Kids... You are accountable for your actions !  Have fun, but be a responsible person when you are driving a jetski !

You and I as boaters have to watch out for all people on the water when they are doing dumb things.   Too many boaters, young and old, seem to leave their brains on the dock when they get on a jetski !

Our 2nd River Picture....And e-mail of the Day ------is of a flying Asian Carp that jumped into Robert Cope's boat, Slow Ride, on Thursday night.

Robert wrote in his e-mail;

Hey Bill.

I "caught" my first Asian Carp last night.  it was a little over a 2 footer.  Jumped straight up from the bow, flew about 9' thru the air, and smacked me in the hip before it fell to the floor.  Blood everywhere, and so slimy I had to pick it up with a towel so I wouldn't loose my grip

Robert Cope

RiverBill says........A person cannot put into words the level of excitement that is created when one of these fish jumps into your boat. Sometimes they are jumping out of the water all around you, sometimes not...It's sort of neat, sort of scary...And definitely a slimy and bloody experience.  Good Catch Robert.....Glad you weren't hurt.

Question of the day......Do you need a fishing license catch fish this way ?

Hello Bill,

I just got introduced to your web site. And I love it!!!!  All your river pictures that are sent to you are great. I had to send you these pictures I had taken a few years ago in June, at our river camp. It is just located about 2 miles north of Hannibal Mo. on the Illinois side.

The second picture was taken In July about a week before the water spout, in the same place.   It was after a storm.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mississippi River

Water Patrol Mississippi River Sobriety Enforcement

This summer the Missouri State Water Patrol will renew its sobriety checkpoint enforcement on the Mississippi River. The purpose of the boating checkpoint is to detect the alcohol impaired boat operators and remove them from the waterways. The Missouri Water Patrol will be stepping up enforcement by targeting drivers over the .10 legal limit. Intoxicated operators are a very serious problem on our lakes and rivers. In nearly 40% of the fatal and serious injury accidents in Missouri, alcohol is listed as the primary contributing factor. Impaired boat operators react more slowly, make judgment errors, cannot multitask effectively and are less attentive when driving a boat or vehicle. These effects can become evident long before the operator would be considered legally "drunk". The problem of alcohol and drug impaired operators is compounded even more when it happens at night under very low lighting conditions. The "drunk driver" is a huge safety concern to the boating public during the daytime, but at night they can be deadly. The Missouri State Water Patrol recognizes the danger of impaired boat operators and is focused in its efforts to remove them from our waterways. The sobriety checkpoint is one tool the Water Patrol uses to address the growing problem of operators Boating While Intoxicated. The checkpoints are designed to act as a deterrent to boat operators who want to drink and drive their boat. Positive enforcement of our alcohol related watercraft laws is the key to greater boater responsibility and ultimately a safer boating environment for everyone.

Last Year's River Picture of the Day ------  What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?

It was a picture of  Port of  POTTIE  sent in by Vivian Powell.

In her e-mail she wrote:   "We have a camp site at the Bohnerts on the river.  My husband loves to fish and in the fall hunts on the Cuivre Island.  Well, because we winterize our camper my husband thought we may need a pottie.  I didn't even know you could buy such a thing.  It was big, blue, & it smelled funny.  The smelling thing wasn't a big deal.  But after I decorated the inside I just had to do something about the outside.  He loves to fish & hunt.  I decorate.  Well, I got it done this Saturday.  I wanted to add an old window air conditioner and a sign that looked like Joe's Crab Shack (our sign would say Jim's Crap Shack).  But he said that was out of the question.  Anyway I thought you might like to post these pic's.  I just wish I could change my hubbies mind about the sign at least."

Thanks for the pictures Vivian.  Send us a couple of more when the new sign goes up.  You just might just have the most famous bathroom on Alton Lake

Drag Boat Racing Update ------ Little John from Big Dicks Half Way In Racing wrote us the following e-mail about their racing last weekend:

Bill,

What a crazy weekend of racing we had….. There was no class for Ashley, So Mike Buerk, (my driver) and I left Wed. night to meet the rest of the team in Gadsten Alabama.

The countryside was beautiful, and an uneventful trip down.  We woke up Fri. morning to find out that Mikes house had burned in the night.  It was an expensive trip, but I made it clear that if he wanted to come home, that is what we would do.   He decided to do our best racing, and deal with the problem on Monday. (He did lose everything)

DEAL WITH RACING HE DID.

  • KWITCHABITCHEN ..... was number one qualifier

  • DICTATER ....was number two qualifier

  • In the finals, we developed a prop problem and had to go out. (Not Mikes fault)

  • Dictater ..... went well up in the rounds  (3rd. I think)

  • We just keep going up in the points

We did have a funny but not funny event !

For people that don’t know, the driver holds on to a starting rope in front of the lights. When the lights flash, he has 20 sec. to start the motor, prepare himself, and be at the line at 0 on a capsule boat, the same deal but they have to shut the lid.  On a top fuel hydro boat, 8000 hp, when you shut the lid, a sequence of things happens.  Computers start running, pure nitro pours into the system, replacing the alcohol, etc.  NO TURNING BACK without a lot of problems.....  One poor driver, doing all of this, SHUT HIS FINGER IN THE LID !!!!!!!   He ran about 230mph in about 5 seconds with one hand You should have heard the screaming on the other end of the radio Rescue was there immediately to open the lid, and six stitches later, he was back on track the next day.

On Friday, we are off to Fort Worth Texas to do it again. On Aug 12th and 13th. We will be in Evansville IL with some surprises for every one.  Please try to come over and watch the show.  It’s only about an hour from St. Louis.
