Hey Bill,

I just learned from my mom about these 4 people one from St. Louis who is canoeing down the Mississippi from the confluence in MN all the way to the Gulf to raise money for band instruments for the kids in New Orleans .

They are spending tonight across from Cuivre Island where the public ramp is.

They plan to make it to Alton tomorrow.

Isn’t it ironic that they are doing this a week before our Mardi Gras?

Anyway they have their own website and it is pretty cool. I am having breakfast with them tomorrow and plan to get them some perks in Alton tomorrow night.

Anyone who would like to check out there website it is as follows, kanoeingforkatrina This is a Blog site and I don’t remember the rest but if they type in that part they will find it in a search engine.

It’s some pretty clever dialogue along with some really cool pics.

I will keep you updated.

Our River Picture of the Day  ----- is of a New "Captain in Training" .........Introducing "Hayden Bicknese" to the entire River Crowd ! ....Welcome Aboard !

Hello Bill,

I though I would send you this picture of our first child and captain-in-training, Hayden.  The picture was taken on our way to the sand bar on the Illinois side of Two Branch.  Diane was trying to show Hayden how to navigate the Lady Di through the dikes in Bolter, but as you can see he was sleeping on the job at the time.  We’ll have to work on that.

Hayden was born on July 13, 2006.  Since it finally cooled down last Saturday, July 22, we took him for his first boat ride on the Lady Di, at nine days old.  He really seemed to like the boat and is sure to become a true river rat.  Hayden’s arrival also makes my dad, Little John of Little John’s Marine Service, a proud grandpa.

Please welcome Hayden to the river community.  See you on the river,

Anglers Rallied As Guardians of Sport ------  Recreational Boating And Fishing Foundation News Release dated July 13:

The gift of fishing is something special that those who don't fish might never get, or even know what they have missed, unless those who fish decide to share it.

Of today's 50 million anglers in the United States, 99 percent say they fish because someone once took the time to introduce them to the sport. But the changing American lifestyle seems to be changing the face of who that someone is, and is also being blamed for much of the angler fallout that has occurred over recent decades.

That is why the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF), a non-profit organization charged by congressional action to address declining participation, is rallying the country's most avid anglers, the sport's strongest guardians, to become part of a new program called Anglers' Legacy and take someone fishing....... Lets Stop The River Litter ------  Pat Daven, who hails out of Two Branch Marina, took it on himself to clean up Hat Island after some boaters left trash and litter all over the place.

Pat wrote in his e-mail:

Bill,

Could you please post a memo on your web page?

I went to Hat Island on Monday the 10th of July and what a mess I found  empty snack boxes, fire logs still smoldering,  literally thousands of cigarette butts every where, beer bottle twist caps laying every where,  dog crap not picked up by their owners,   tissues (potty time) ones just dropped and left in the weeded area. most disturbing was the two broken beer bottles laying in the sand and large logs cut up for fire wood right at the shores edge on the north side. If the water level was to rise just a bit those logs would go afloat, "not good" as you know.    you get the picture here I'm sure. I spent almost two hours picking up trash and putting out the smoldering logs.

Anyway could you please inform the web page readers that as a boating community everyone do their share of keeping our river haven better than we found it !!!

Sincerely,

Patrick Daven

Two Branch Marina member.

It was a picture sent in by Captain Mike.  He wrote last year:

"Another boat that hit the levee at the top of Bolter Island on Sunday. I took these PICS Monday morning after the water went down about 8 inches. You can see he just made it on top. He hit the same levee the fly-bridge boat hit a few weeks ago that was  PIC of the day. We just need to warn everyone since the levee's are not marked."

Littering, Registration Numbers, Documented Vessel's Names ------  We received an e-mail from Patrolman Lou Amighetti ot the Missouri State Water Patrol about littering, the Blessing of the Fleet,  registration numbers and documented vessel's names.

Lou wrote in his e-mail:

RiverBill,

With the summer in full swing, the Missouri Water Patrol would like to remind the boating public to review boating laws and regulations.  The Alton Pool is a unique environment; we must take steps to maintain the river for future boaters.  We are seeing an increase in trash on the beaches and in the water.  Let it be known that if you are found littering, you be issued a citation.  This Sunday is the Blessing of the Fleet.  The Missouri Water Patrol wants to remind boaters partaking in the event to make sure that all registration numbers or documented vessel's names are visible.  If you registration or documented name cannot be seen you will be stopped.  The Missouri Water Patrol and the Illinois Conservation Police want to also remind  the boating public that when you boat on the Mississippi River, you must follow both Missouri and Illinois laws.  If you have any questions you can refer to our websites:

Blessing of the Fleet / Parade of Boats

Blessing of the Fleet Enters 49th Year

…With a Few Changes

Boating enthusiasts anticipate the annual Blessing of the Fleet to be held this year on Sunday, July 16th.  This years Parade of Boats and Blessing of the Fleet honors tradition, but a few changes have been made to the route to accommodate ease in participation and encourage attendance.  The decorating theme for this year is “Vacation Fun Under the St. Louis Sun”, allowing participants to promote their favorite St. Louis Summertime event or activity, sport or recreation thru creatively decorating their vessels to this theme.  For example, the St. Louis Zoo, Forest Park, The Munie, Baseball Cardinals, or New Bush Stadium, some may choose places like Six Flags, The Arch or Missouri Wine Country to name a few.  Participating vessels may gather at the parade origin, Yacht Club of St. Louis, St. Charles, or may join the parade in progress at the end of the line as it passes each harbor along the route.  Parade Patrol boats will be stationed along the route and available for assistance where needed. Use your creative talent in decorating with your favorite theme include music and costume, join the fun to “WOW” the Judges and win a memorable prize while enjoying a festive and most enjoyable day on the water with family and friends.

Launching at 1 PM on Sunday, July 16th from Yacht Club of St. Louis, the boats proceed downstream in main channel of the Mississippi River, single file, to mile 221.2 where it turns toward the Missouri shore, proceeding upstream, 50’ between each boat, to pass at approximately 2:15 PM the Shrine of Our Lady of the River where the priest Fr. Robert Banken, of St. Francis of Assisi, Portage de Sioux will bless each boat.  Immediately following the blessing, the parade continues upstream past the VIP Boat and Judges Boat for Review and disburses on  to Grafton Harbor for Announcement of Winners, Awards Presentation and Festivities immediately following the Blessing. Docking and Assistance is available to all Finalists at Grafton Harbor where refreshments are available and the Final Winners will be announced!  Look for Our New Flyers they are available at Your Harbors.

The Shrine honors the memory of the 1951 flood that nearly swallowed the tiny town of Portage des Sioux.  Residents prayed to Mary, “The Lady of the Rivers”, and watched as the waters slowly receded.  Moved by the miracle, the residents and local businesses erected a shrine in 1957.  A several years ago, the famous traveler, Lowell Thomas, and the nations’ top newspaper editors, picked 43 places of interest, as suggested vacation destinations for Americans to visit.  The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rivers was included.  Veteran river people say there is no more beautiful sight, from Minneapolis to New Orleans, than this area of Portage des Sioux with the Shrine and palisades on the opposite side of the river.

Scott was a former member of the Byrds and Pat, a founding member of Mama's Pride.  Last night the three played as a trio and each performed solo. Every song these artists played was a cut above the last and it just kept getting better, better and better !

Our River Picture Of The Day  (Part I) ----- is of the River Extravaganza boat... .The Redneck Woman , owned by Dale Williams of the band Stripper Named Phoebe.    Above is a shot of the steel hull boat just before it was launched yesterday evening at Hideaway Harbor park.   It's a River Queen House Boat that has been modified into what is now affectionately known as a Portage Skiff.  Plenty of room for a band, speakers and all their equipment !

We took it on it's maiden voyage yesterday evening and everything checked out good....so watch for it on Saturday as it motors around the area with a band on board playing music !

RiverBill says....Good job Dale...... It's an awesome boat !

Our River Picture Of The Day  (Part II) ----- is of the Flying Carp Attack.  On the way back from Capt'n Jack's last night we had a beautiful sunset and a peaceful ride until we got near Slim Island.....Then..... Just about dark....... the flying carp started to jump as the "perrrrrr" of motor on the Redneck Woman spooked them. ...Hundreds of them !    They jumped all around us for the whole length of Slim Island and beyond. Some jumped just a bit above the water and some jumped 6 or more feet into the air.  About 8 or 9 of them jumped over the rail on the Portage Skiff and landed inside boat....now you can bet that caused some excitement.   Quite a few could be heard hitting hard on the steel hull (thud..) as they jumped aimlessly into the air.  One jumped so high it almost landed on top of the roof of the aft cabin of The Redneck Woman.  If you didn't know it...the fish usually hurt themselves when the hit the boat, they start bleeding and flop around spreading blood and guts everywhere.

To top it all off..... we pulled Bob's Jon Boat behind the Red Neck Woman as we motored home .....He landed 5 of the flying carp without even being in the boat !

RiverBill says....Thanks for the ride Dale ...it was quite a trip.  Good meeting everyone and hope to see you all again soon.

Racing Update.....

 Bill,

The KWITCHABITCHRN boat took 4th place, and Ashley Ruf  also took 4th in her class.

These wins were a week ago in Waco Texas.

The trip was safe and uneventful.

We didn't break ANYTHING

We are now geared up and ready to leave this wed. for 5 days of racing in Okalahoma City.

Other than the world finals, this is one of the largest races of our season.

Probably 40 to 50 boats in our class.

Our equipment is the best it can be, and we really feel good about our chances of a win.

Incidentally, if anyone out there is interested in a possible sponsorship, it would sure help offset our fuel costs

Weekend update from Captain Daryyll Weil..... Daryyll sent us an update for his website about last weekend on the river.

Daryyll wrote:

Maureen's daughter, Nikki, spent her first weekend on the river.  Saturday we headed up to Cedar Hill Resort for lunch and then down to Two Branch to raft up with friends.  Headed back into the harbor that evening so we could go to Captain Jack's off the River and Sharky's Cove.  Sunday we took a cruise by Grafton and rafted up with Horace and Kathleen on the "Relaxin" in Mason Chute.  I got to test drive one of the Aquascooters Horace is selling.  Basically it's a gas powered two cycle engine running a jet drive.  You just hold on and squeeze the throttle.  Runs about 5 mph and a tank of gas lasts about 3 hours.  Pretty cool toy!  Horace sells them for $775.  The snorkel you see is the air intake.  Check out all the pics at:

Also added a new web page called "Where's Gary".  You may remember Gary and Kathleen from the houseboat "River Dreams II"  and the go fast boat "White Trash".  Seems Gary likes my pictures so much he wanted to take and post some of his own.  Also, I found out his mom checks my website to see what her son is up to on the river, so this will give here a better idea of what he is thinking.

Cody ....Update on The Lost River Puppy

Hi Bill,

We recently posted information about the puppy who found us.  We had the dog checked for a microchip but nothing was found.  I think this dog was just dumped.  He is really a beautiful dog, good-natured and willing to please.  He was easy to crate-train and walks well on a leash.  He knows the sit and down command; however, the stay command needs to be worked on.  He would really make someone a nice friend and family member.  We named him Cody and he gets along well with our dog but we live in a condo type setup and can not keep him.  He is part yellow lab but his face kinda looks like a Saint Bernard.  We are taking him to the vet this Thursday for an exam and to get him started on shots.  I have no idea if he has received any puppy shots yet but I want to be sure he receives whatever is needed.  Since you were so helpful in putting the notice on the website, I thought you might like to be updated.  I’m going to email you a few pictures of Cody, in case you hear of anyone looking for a nice, primarily inside dog.  Thanks.

Fourth of July Weekend 2006 on the river

Spent the long Fourth of July weekend on the river.  Saturday, after a leisurely boat ride, we rafted up with some friends in a slough between Two Branch Island and the Illinois shoreline.  Stayed out on the boat that night and then came back into Woodland Marina to do some chores and parts running.  Called the new Grafton Harbor and reserved a couple of slips for Monday night so we could watch the fireworks.  Monday, after another leisurely ride, we arrived in Grafton Harbor and were promptly taken care of by their very accommodating staff.  They fixed us up with slips where we had a fantastic view of the fireworks.  Can't say enough nice things about the staff there.  One of the dockhands, Nathan, even offered to run us up to one of the restaurants in town if we wanted.  The entire operation is first class and we will definitely go there anytime we head over to Grafton.  In fact, everywhere we went in town, the people were extremely friendly and helpful.  Tuesday morning we ate breakfast at Lilly's Landing, about a mile and a half walk down the bike path from the marina, and the lady there told us to call next time and they will either come get us at the marina or deliver our breakfast right to the boat!  Needless to say all of this made for a very pleasant stay.  Bob and Janet came by with their new "River Pig", the boat Bob is fixing up so they can come up to the river more often, and took it on it's maiden voyage and then returned Monday evening to watch the fireworks with us.

Our Pictures & E-mail Of The Weekend -----  are from Captain Robert Cope

Darryll wrote in his e-mail;

Hi Bill, it's Robert from the boat Slow Ride.
Sunday I was on the way back from a weekend at Lake Wapapello, and it had been 3 weeks since I had been on the river, so I decided to head out for a short trip on the river before I went home and to see my friends playing at the Loading Dock. This means, I had my boat in 2 lakes on the same day.

On the way to the Loading Dock, I managed to get a good pic for the Grafton Ferry Picture Contest. It's attached along with a pic of Terry Rodgers, Scott Nienhaus, and Karen Crawford waving from the stage at the loading dock (check out all those guitars).  They'll be playing at Cap'n Jacks this Thursday (7-6-06)

Please Boat Responsibly This Holiday Weekend ------ We received the following e-mail Friday evening and I thought I would share it with everyone:

Hi RiverBill,

I had a friendly visit from a DNR officer at the boat ramp in Alton tonight. I saw them sitting at Alton, Grafton and Pere Marquette tonight, checking everyone who came in. The officer tonight said they were going to have there presence know this weekend. He said Lou had already gotten his first BUI of the weekend last night. The encounter I had was a pleasant one as I had everything in proper order. I hope all our other boating friends have the same luck this weekend...

Everyone be safe and have a great Independence Day weekend !

Damage at Iowa & Enterprise Island ------ We received the following e-mail...Thought I would share it with everyone:

A friend, at my place of employment mentioned that he visited these Islands Thursday evening and found the places vandalized and possible bullet holes in the barbeque cooking items . I hate to hear of events like this happening where people want to have a good time . You might mention to your reading audiences to be aware of people doing destruction at these Islands.

It only takes a few bad acts to ruin other peoples happy weekends.
