Went
down to Truman Lake to get in a little pre-fishing and familiarize myself with
the lake better before the Concord Lions Fish for Sight Tournament on the
29th. While searching for largemouth bass spots to fish I stumbled
across some hybrids (cross between a striper and a white bass) feeding on
shad. Managed to get two of them in the boat, lost one right at the boat
because my net wasn't big enough and one broke my line. The larger one
is 7 pounds and the smaller one is about 5 1/4 pounds. Should have seen
the one that got away!

Our
River Picture of The Day.........
Was sent in by Steve
Schulte. It's a shot of the towboat GILDA
SHURDEN heading down river, passing directly in front of the St.
Louis Arch. Look at the art deco lines on that towboat.
I did an internet search on this towboat and found that it was built in 1947
by Hillman Barge & Construction...And it's still in service..
Another point of interest is that in December 2005 this towboat helped
put out a fire on the towboat Jennie Dehmer in Wood River, IL, .

What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?
Is

 near
the UMR 224 mile marker last year this time.   That
day's editorial also included the following statement:
This might be the only place in Missouri where the sun sets over Illinois.
Oh Buoy...was I wrong.......The next day
I got a rebuttal from my friend Kathy FLippo of Tow Talkin, who has probably
traveled the length of the Mississippi River more times than most of us have backed our boats out of the
dock. She wrote this response:

"It might be but it ain't.   The sun sets over Illinois down at Dogtooth Bend, UMR mile 21 to 23 and at UMR mile 14 to 17 in the Sisters Island, Scudder Towhead, Grand Lake Towhead and Thompson Towhead neighborhood.   You know of course that there is Illinois real estate on the
right
descending bank of the UMR also, don't you?   There at mile 110.5 up to 118.5 you are running through Illinois on both banks.   In fact the whole little town of Kaskaskia Illinois is on the Missouri side!     We fleeted at Farmer's landing light, mile 111.5.  --------   And tit for tat, a little chunk of Missouri real estate is over on the left
descending bank of the UMR mile 76.5 to 79.3. It is called Grand Tower Island, Perry County, Missouri.

These photos were taken Saturday about 3PM. They called me in enough time that I was able to locate the websites but it took a while to figure out how to save the pics.

If anyone knows what kind of ducks Steve took a picture of - please let us know.
The next day Captain Gary Bowers, Captain Rick Sievers and last but not least, Kathy Flippo of Tow Talkin emailed me that they are
"Hooded
Merganser" ducks.     Kathy added the following bit of information   "You don't want to ever eat any of the merganser family, hooded, red-breasted or American. They are fishers and taste AWFUL "     Captain Rick Sievers wrote, "They are rather uncommon and not often seen. they tend to be more in woodland lakes and quiet
streams."

Ahoy
Bill,
Laurie
and I hope you had a great winter. It's about time to get the season ready and
going.
I'm attaching a picture of the 2006 Graduating class of the "Captain's
License Course" that was held in St. Louis the last week in March. The
class was presented by World Wide Marine Training located in Oriental,
NC and was given by Captain John Kitson V. The class course was 7 days long
and the test was on the 8th day. It was a very intense 8 days. But the
knowledge and education that we received will be invaluable for life. With
successful completion of the training, we received a Certificate of Completion
for an Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels.
The new "Captains" are Laurie Brucker, Ed Berg, Corrin Hart, Mike
Bullock, John Reed, Dan Hamilton, Matt Hahn, Travis Turley, Jack Humes, Tracy
Frenzil, Jim Antonacci, Kevin Quacle, Captain John Kitson V, and Brad Hefferon.
Thanks,

What
a great Saturday for boating. Stopped to check out one of the duck
blinds yesterday. My 1st mate went in and started to explore a
bit. When she stuck her head out of the top, she startled the goose that

a work barge containing channel buoys.   This picture is from the US Army Corps of
Engineers live-cam at Winfield Dam.
There was also a link to a newspaper article about Piasa Park on
RiverBills.com last year on this date. The park is located along the Great River Road near Alton,
IL and I had just been there, so I was able to included some my pictures
with the article of the park area, the Piasa Bird and the caves.....And
......a close up of just the Piasa Bird.

Our
River Pictures and e-mail of the day.........
are from John Bicknese of Little
John's Marine Service.
John
wrote in his e-mail:
Bill,
Got a good start on building our big motor today.
The
intake and valve covers did make a good picture.
The picture of Ashly's face in the valve cover shows the serious effort on her
part.
Ashly is now employed by St. Charles Boat And Motor, when she is not
racing. Please
tell the people to stop in and look around,
St.
Charles Boat And Motor have been a very big help in our operation.
With a little luck, we will be lighting the big engine next weekend.
Everything is on track. April 28th in Waco Texas is growing close.
Thanks,
Little
John
RiverBill says.......
That's a

Bill,
The "Marina Jack II" pictures look good. Here's a Riverdawg for ya.
Molly
is a 6 1/2 year old Jack Russell Terrier, owned by Jule, Barb, & Dan
Wagner.
Dan calls her his MooseMouse, because she has the heart of a moose &
the ears of a mouse. Barb says, She loves to retrieve anything out of the
river, and likes to play tug of war. Your Web Site is great....

Riding The Storm
Out at The Portage Bar and Grill ------
The storm came through Sunday afternoon and wrecked
havoc on the whole area, but the Jam Session at the Portage Bar and Grill went
on as scheduled even though they lost power. The solution was
simple. Get a portable generator, hook up the amps and the rest of the
musical equipment, add a floor light and keep on jamming.
The music never stopped. River
folks don't let a little storm slow down the show. Great job guys.

Our
River Pictures and e-mail of the day....
were sent to us by Marty Haugh, who hails out of Johns Harbor. Marty
sent us some pictures of the Antique
and Classic Boat Society's annual boat show in Mt. Dora, Florida..
Marty
wrote in his e-mail:
Bill,
Just returned from Mt.Dora Fl. The Sunnyland Chapter of the Antique and
Classic Boat Society has just put on their annual boat show. There were around
350 boats from all over the US. I even had a long conversation with Chris
Smith, the grandson of the founder of Chris-Craft. Mt.Dora is a beautiful
place and if you have never been, it is unlike the rest of Florida. It's about
45 miles north of Orlando in lake county Florida. It has three rather large
lakes that are all connected to each other and to the St. Johns River. One of
only two rivers in the world that runs north to south. A large group of
antique boats made a two day run up the river to Jacksonville . I
may try that next year. Anyway, I can't wait to get on the river.
Happy
Boating
Marty
Haugh
RiverBill
says.....Thanks for the pictures Marty ! Those are some great looking
boats.
As many of you might know, Marty owns a wooden antique boat himself.
Here is a picture
of it with the mooring cover still on that was taken early in the
morning after last years Jamaica Daze Party.
Stay tuned......We hope to do a picture spread on Marty's boat sometime this
Summer.
