River Bill,

Attached is a photo of MY house boat.

I've seen the one you had posted on your website Friday, 04/21/06.I'm not one that likes to have second best, so I opt out for the deluxe model with twin outboards. I'd challenge the owner of the other houseboat to a race for pink slips, but I currently have 169 monthly payments left on my rig before I can can say she's all mine! I'd have it paid of by now if I didn't get that home improvement loan last year, but them new hup caps sure look good on my mobile home.

Dave wrote in his e-mail:

Bill,

This was taken from the stern of our boat on a clear, crisp day in January near Pierre Marquette State Park. We were out looking for eagles and these gulls came up behind us.   I was surprised that they were coming so close.   I soon discovered that my two daughters had been tossing popcorn overboard and that is why we were being "stalked" by our fine feathered friends!

Another Picture And E-mail ......... Captain Darryll  Weil, an avid river boater and big contributor to this website, went fishing.  Its not river fish in the picture , but it's one of our river friends with a couple of good looking fish and a bit of a story.

Darryll wrote in his e-nail:

Bill,

Went  down to Truman Lake to get in a little pre-fishing and familiarize myself with the lake better before the Concord Lions Fish for Sight Tournament on the 29th.  While searching for largemouth bass spots to fish I stumbled across some hybrids (cross between a striper and a white bass) feeding on shad.  Managed to get two of them in the boat, lost one right at the boat because my net wasn't big enough and one broke my line.  The larger one is 7 pounds and the smaller one is about 5 1/4 pounds.  Should have seen the one that got away!

Enjoy, Darryll

It was a unique view of Alton and the Clark Bridge   taken by Steve Schulte.   This is a shot from the Missouri side of the river, looking at Alton through the Clark Bridge.   The very modern lines of the bridge really offset the look of the older buildings staggered up the hill in the background.........And......Alton Marina can be seen in the lower right hand corner.

Our River Pictures and e-mail of the day......... are from Sandy who wrote in her e-mail:

Bill,

This picture  (river5) is of Brad and Cindy Bradshaw.  Taken Saturday 4/1 near Shell Island (river10).  They were out on the river with Gary and Sandy Scott and friend Lori Hayes (river2).  What a beautiful day

Last Year's River Picture On This Day  ------ What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?

Is was a picture of the sun setting over Calhoun County, IL &nbspnear the UMR 224 mile marker last year this time.   That day's editorial also included the following statement:

This might be the only place in Missouri where the sun sets over Illinois.

Oh Buoy...was I wrong.......The next day I got a rebuttal from my friend Kathy FLippo of Tow Talkin, who has probably traveled the length of the Mississippi River more times than most of us have backed our boats out of the dock.  She wrote this response:

"It might be but it ain't.   The sun sets over Illinois down at Dogtooth Bend, UMR mile 21 to 23 and at UMR mile 14 to 17 in the Sisters Island, Scudder Towhead, Grand Lake Towhead and Thompson Towhead neighborhood.   You know of course that there is Illinois real estate on the right descending bank of the UMR also, don't you?   There at mile 110.5 up to 118.5 you are running through Illinois on both banks.   In fact the whole little town of Kaskaskia Illinois is on the Missouri side!     We fleeted at Farmer's landing light, mile 111.5.  --------   And tit for tat, a little chunk of Missouri real estate is over on the left descending bank of the UMR mile 76.5 to 79.3. It is called Grand Tower Island, Perry County, Missouri.

Our River Pictures and e-mail of the day......... are an update on the location of Marina Jack II from Barb McCulloch.

Barb wrote in her emails:

UPDATE: Attached are web-cam photos of Marina Jack II at the fuel dock just outside Lulu's Restaurant (Jimmy Buffet's sister) at Homeport Marina in Gulf Shores, AL.   The lads made a short stop for fuel and grouper sandwiches to go and were off again. They are now in the I.C.W. between Pensacola and Ft. Walton Beach.

These photos were taken Saturday about 3PM. They called me in enough time that I was able to locate the websites but it took a while to figure out how to save the pics.   Alas, I missed the one of the boys waving frantically at the webcam inside Lulu's.   Wonder what the other clientele were thinking!

Last Year's River Picture On This Day  ------ What the heck was the picture on RiverBills.com last year on this day ?

It was a picture of  a couple of weird looking ducks   on the Mississippi River near the Alton Lock and Dam sent in by Steve Schulte.     I didn't know what kind of birds they were, so I added the following message that day:

If anyone knows what kind of ducks Steve took a picture of - please let us know.

The next day Captain Gary Bowers, Captain Rick Sievers and last but not least, Kathy Flippo of Tow Talkin emailed me that they are "Hooded Merganser" ducks.     Kathy added the following bit of information   "You don't want to ever eat any of the merganser family, hooded, red-breasted or American. They are fishers and taste AWFUL "     Captain Rick Sievers wrote, "They are rather uncommon and not often seen. they tend to be more in woodland lakes and quiet streams."

Ahoy Bill,

Laurie and I hope you had a great winter. It's about time to get the season ready and going.

It was a very intense 8 days. But the knowledge and education that we received will be invaluable for life. With successful completion of the training, we received a Certificate of Completion for an Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels.

The new "Captains" are Laurie Brucker, Ed Berg, Corrin Hart, Mike Bullock, John Reed, Dan Hamilton, Matt Hahn, Travis Turley, Jack Humes, Tracy Frenzil, Jim Antonacci, Kevin Quacle, Captain John Kitson V, and Brad Hefferon.

Our River Picture and e-mail of the day......... are from Robert "SlowRide" Cope.  He and his 1st mate took Slow Ride (see it through the brush) out for a cruise last Saturday.....And look what they found.   Guess where this nest is at.

Robert wrote in his e-mail:

What a great Saturday for boating.  Stopped to check out one of the duck blinds yesterday.   My 1st mate went in and started to explore a bit.  When she stuck her head out of the top, she startled the goose that had made a nest right on top of the duck blind.

I found it pretty ironic that a goose decided to build her nest right on top of a duck blind.

Our River Pictures and e-mail of the day.... were sent to us by Marty Haugh, who hails out of Johns Harbor.  Marty sent us some pictures of the Antique and Classic Boat Society's annual boat show in Mt. Dora, Florida..

Marty wrote in his e-mail:

Bill,

Just returned from Mt.Dora Fl. The Sunnyland Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society has just put on their annual boat show. There were around 350 boats from all over the US. I even had a long conversation with Chris Smith, the grandson of the founder of Chris-Craft. Mt.Dora is a beautiful place and if you have never been, it is unlike the rest of Florida. It's about 45 miles north of Orlando in lake county Florida. It has three rather large lakes that are all connected to each other and to the St. Johns River. One of only two rivers in the world that runs north to south. A large group of antique boats made a two day run up the river  to Jacksonville . I may try that next year. Anyway, I can't wait to get on the river.

Happy Boating

Marty Haugh

RiverBill  says.....Thanks for the pictures Marty !  Those are some great looking boats.

Carl wrote in his e-mail:

Bill,

We took a drive up Grafton to eat fish and check out the progress on the Marina, Daniel kept saying lets go boating as we sat at O,Jans and ate.   Took a couple of shots of the (Grafton) Ferry from their Deck.   The (Grafton) Marina is coming along nicely.  I'M ready to get out there.
