Our River Picture of the Day ------ was sent in by Captain Darryll Weil.  It is of the2nd tug for the Grafton Ferry, Bluewater, in dry dock.

Darryll wrote:

"Went up to the River to do some work on my boat.  While at Sharky's Cove ran into Pete Tully from Polestar Marina who told me he was having extensive work done on the second tug for the Grafton Ferry.  After lunch I went over to see how the work was progressing and took some pictures of it while it's in drydock.  Judging by the amount of work going on it is obvious Pete is making it as reliable as possible as he told me they carry about 9700 cars a month now.  As far as I know the Grafton Ferry is the only ferry that actually crosses two rivers, the Mississippi and the Illinois, on each trip. Letter To The Editor....

Ameren UE eyes the Confluence for a toxic landfill

Ameren UE officials recently approached Great Rivers to get opinions on their plans to build a 240 acre industrial waste landfill in the middle of the Confluence.  Great Rivers is adamantly opposed to the project and told the officials we would not support their efforts.  The proposed landfill would be used to store waste from smoke stack scrubbers at the Portage des Sioux power plant.  Great Rivers suggested Ameren could use the barge fleeting facility it constructed three years ago for the purpose of hauling the waste to an area that would have less impact on the environment. The officials suggested it would be difficult to find a community that would accept the waste, but, ironically, went on to say how safe the new landfill would be.   Great Rivers was opposed to the construction of the barge fleeting facility and finds it troubling that Ameren pushed the project through and now refuses to use it for its intended purpose.   According to Ameren officials, the proposed landfill would reach 8 to 10 stories high and would be protected by a 500- year levee. This project not only threatens to pollute our nationís largest rivers with industrial waste in a flood, but would also effectively remove a large portion of Confluence Flood Plain at its narrowest point. This is yet another project seeking to misuse land that is best suited for wildlife and natural flood relief. Great Rivers will do everything possible to stop yet another levee.

Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of one of the  Cardboard Boat Races at Two Rivers Marina this past weekend.  The competition was heating up in this picture as these guys were on the last leg of the race and heading to the finish line.  There were a couple of sinkings during the different heats with one right at the starting line.   The cardboard boats were taken out of the water right away after the each heat to dry-out a bit before the next race..   What a blast !

There will be more pictures tomorrow from the Two Rivers Party and the trip home.

JAMAICA DAZE 2005 Poster.....Help A Fellow Boater------ A picture is worth a thousand words and this says it all.  Yah Mon !..........Its a  11 X 14  black and white glossy  "Jamaica Daze 2005" poster that is available for  $10.00 each and all proceeds go to  the boater that was injured by the boat propellers last summer when he tried to stop someone from running into his new boat..  Contact Marty Henderson at fotou1@yahoo.com or look him up on at Iowa Beach if you are interested in purchasing one.  It is a great picture, very reasonably priced, it will look good on your wall and most of all it is for a good cause..

Louisiana Party ------ No pictures......Forgot my cable to download pictures from my camera to my laptop. Tried to find one in town yesterday with no luck and then I borrowed one from my friend, Ronnie Stevens, but it didn't fit....So it is a "No picture Update" of the party at Two Rivers Marina.  Also,  I can't upload data to my server from here for some reason, so I am e-mailing the updates to the tech department and Captain Gary bowers is uploading them for me.  ......Thanks to all for your patience.

Mainly boaters from Con Trios Yacht Club are here.  Not as many boaters as there used to be in years past, but those that are here are having a blast.  Swim pool party yesterday, a dock walk poker run, with jello shots at each check point.   Fish fry in the early evening with plenty of side dishes.   Sunset cruise up the Salt River on a mini tugboat and mini barge about 7PM..  The music was playing, people were dancing from the time we left until we returned.  Then off to the dock party with more music, drinks and dancing.  I am not sure how long it lasted, as we  went back to the room about 2 AM.  The security guard was kind enough to drive us across the bridge to the Riversedge motel where we are staying.

There are rumors that we will have a non-sanctioned cardboard boat race on Sunday and more.

Monday it will be back down the river on Pat and John's cruiser named "Good Vibrations"

Next update to RiverBill's will be Monday night, as we are going to stay in Papa John's boat tonight and no internet connection will be available.  Look for plenty of pictures on next week.

Have a good holiday and most of all be safe.

   See on the river...Billl

Dog Days Of Summer - A Huge Success ------ Justin Postle, a river boater, member of the band The Lookbacks and one of the key people in the "Dog Days of Summer Festival" that took place on Main Street in St. Charles last weekend wrote me the following e-mail:

"Thanks for the help with the Dog Days event.  The first year was a huge success.  Your pictures got more looks than I can count.  Ever one loved the River Dogs.  Next year I would like to get even more, so keep asking if people want to send them in so we have plenty for next year."

As most of you know RiverBill's collected about a dozen pictures of our River Dogs and Justin had them put on display at the festival.  The pictures had the dog's name on them along with the name of the owner(s) so everyone knew who they were.  Thanks to each of you that sent us pictures. I hope to create a "River Dog Page" for them real soon.

Keep the River Dog pictures coming and we will put on an even better display next year.
