Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of developer Joe DeSherlia speaking at the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Grafton Harbor on Wednesday afternoon.  The ground breaking ceremony officially started the construction on the new facility that is scheduled to be completed by February of 2006.  This project has been in the works since the 1960's and it has now become a reality.  The new harbor will be built along the bank of  the Illinois River in the town of Grafton, IL, near the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi.  It will be located just up-river from the Grafton Ferry Landing and in front of the old school building.  (You know the school building that is next to the road that goes up the bluff to Aries Winery.)

The facility will have 300 slips and be protected by a floating breakwater.  The docks will have concrete walkways and there will be docks available for transient boaters.  Look for a pool,  hot tub, bait shop, mechanical service, private luxury bathroom suites, convenience store, ship's store and more.

As you know, Grafton has always been a difficult place for the boaters to visit because of the almost non-existent docking facilities. This new harbor will change that and it will open up the city of Grafton to the boaters of Alton Lake. There are all kinds of wineries, restaurants and shops within easy walking distance of the new harbor.  Its going to be great !

  For more information call  ( 618) 786 - 7678  or   go to   www.graftonharbor.net

There was plenty of  fried fish and beverages for everyone after the ceremonies were over.  I got to talk to Joe DeSherlia for a bit about the new marina and I thanked him for opening up the City of Grafton to us boaters.

I also got to meet Carl Seidler from Godfrey. IL.  Carl is an avid boater, who grew up on the river near Winfield Dam,  just below present day location of Cedar Hill Restaurant.  You might spot Carl  in the "family section" of Mason Chute or  on Iowa Island.  Stop and say hello.

A big Thanks goes to  Sue Ferguson from Timber Ridge Condo's for snapping some of the pictures for me.

Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of  Port of  POTTIE  sent in by Vivian Powell.

In her e-mail she wrote:

"We have a camp site at the Bohnerts on the river.  My husband loves to fish and in the fall hunts on the Cuivre Island.  Well, because we winterize our camper my husband thought we may need a pottie.  I didn't even know you could buy such a thing.  It was big, blue, & it smelled funny.  The smelling thing wasn't a big deal.  But after I decorated the inside I just had to do something about the outside.  He loves to fish & hunt.  I decorate.  Well, I got it done this Saturday.  I wanted to add an old window air conditioner and a sign that looked like Joe's Crab Shack (our sign would say Jim's Crap Shack).  But he said that was out of the question.  Anyway I thought you might like to post these pic's.  I just wish I could change my hubbies mind about the sign at least."

Thanks for the pictures Vivian.  Send us a couple of more when the new sign goes up.  You just might just have the most famous bathroom on Alton Lake.

Captain Calvin ------  Brian Schaffer sent me the following river story about a quick thinking river man named Captain Calvin.

Brian wrote:

" I WANT TO TELL A STORY ABOUT A QUICK THINKING CAPTAIN OF  (IT'LL DO II ),   A 28 FT CARVER ON THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI.

   HIS NAME IS CALVIN.

HE WAS NAVIGATING THROUGH A SLOUGH THAT THEY HAD BEEN THROUGH MANY TIMES BEFORE  (snake chute ).  THE WATER HAD DROPPED CONSIDERABLY SINCE IT WAS LATE SUMMER.  .  ALL OF THE SUDDEN THE BOAT RAISED UP A COUPLE FEET IN THE   WATER.  THEY HAD HIT A SUBMERGED LOG ON THE BOTTOM.  IT TORE OUT ONE OF HIS PROP SHAFTS AND THE BOAT STARTED TAKING ON WATER IMMEDIATELY.   THE OTHER SHAFT WAS LEAKING SEVERELY !     CALVIN JUMPED IN THE BILGE SHOVED THE HOLE FULL A RAGS, BOTH ENGINES WERE STILL RUNNING.   THE WATER WAS COMING IN SO QUICKLY THE BILGE PUMP COULD NOT KEEP UP.  HIS FIRST THOUGHT WAS TO BEACH IT ON THE NEAREST SAND BAR AND DEAL WITH GETTING BACK TO THE HARBOR LATER. THIS IS WHERE THE BRAIN POWER KICKED IN ! ! !    CALVIN HAD AN IDEA.   HE DISCONNECTED THE WATER INTAKE HOSE FOR THE COOLING OF THE ENGINE WITH THE NOW  DISABLED DRIVE AND PUT IT IN THE FLOODED BILGE.   HE REVED THE MOTOR AND USED IT AS A SUPER CHARGED BILGE PUMP. THE STARBOARD ENGINE WAS BARELY OPERABLE BUT THEY WERE ABLE TO NAVIGATE WITH THE ONE ENGINE TO THE BEACH. HE FOUND A FELLOW BOATER AT THE BEACH THAT WOULD TOW HIM TO THE NEAREST MARINA. AT THAT TIME HE HAD TO USE THE SECOND ENGINE AS A BILGE PUMP AS THERE WAS TO MUCH WATER FOR THE ONE ENGINE TO HANDLE.   HE GOT ON HIS RADIO AND HAILED THE LOCAL MARINA ( Polestar) THAT HAD A LIFT CAPABLE OF RAISING HIM OUT OF THE WATER .   WHEN HE GOT THERE THEY WERE WAITING FOR HIM AND HE MOTORED RIGHT INTO THE LIFT AND WAS LIFTED TO SAFETY.    I WONDER HOW MANY BOATERS WOULD BE THAT QUICK WITTED IN A SITUATION LIKE THAT ?

THAT'S THE KIND OF CAPTAIN I WANT TO RIDE WITH.

     WAY TO GO CALVIN ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! "
