Our River Picture of the Day ------ Is actually a series of 6 today named,   "It doesn't look good !"     What is that guy doing wading in the water at the boat ramp ?     Again, we have a few clues -- OH NO !.   it's another vehicle in the water.   Keep pulling -- just a little further.    OK -   Just a little more ---Pull !  Now that we are checking things out --   are there any fish in there ?     Yes, everyone agrees What a mess !     These pictures were taken by Lisa Beckman last summer at the Long Shot Saloon in Portage Des Sioux.   She was quick to point out that it wasn't her truck, nor did it belong to any of her friends and that it took two different tow trucks to get it out.     Thanks for sharing these pictures with us Lisa !
Cedar Hill Opens This Friday ------ I talked to Dave Ash yesterday and he told me Cedar Hill will open for the season, as planned, this Friday at 11:00 AM.   Drop by and say hello to Dave and Carrie and the rest of the river crowd.   Check out their new web site by clicking on the link in the right hand column of this page. .

Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of some of the work going on at the Calhoun Point Habitat Rehabilitation and Enhancement Project.     This picture was taken just a bit down stream from the Brussels Ferry on the Illinois River.   Some of the highlights of the project include berms to protect the 2,100 acre site from frequent sediment laden floods, provide a means to perch water on to the interior to increase waterfowl habitation and reverse some of the siltation that has occurred.   For more information go to the on-line ASE Research library.
Fire at the Apple Shed Restaurant ------ The Apple Shed Restaurant in Batchtown ( Calhoun County ) burned to the ground on Wednesday.   An investigator with the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office indicated the fire may have started in a downstairs kitchen.   For more information go to the On-LIne Telegraph.

Our River Picture of the Day ------ Is actually a series of 4 today.   I am going to name them Guess what we caught at the boat ramp ?"     These pictures are from the 80's. I think they were taken at John's Boat Harbor and I am not exactly sure anymore who all the people are.   If you need a few clues as to what they caught -- click here.   Yep - It looks like a wet SUV.    How wet is it ?   REAL WET !
Anchor Yankers Web Link ------ I added a hot link to Anchor Yankers web site in the left hand column of this web page.   Take a look !

Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of the   lookout stand   on the Missouri side of the river in the Riverlands Environmental Demonstration Area by Alton lock and Dam.

03-26- 05
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is an   aerial shot of the river   taken by Steve Schulte.   The aircraft is flying down-river, around the UMR 217 mile marker, heading towards Portage Des Sioux.   Looks like "Slim Island" on the right hand side of the windshield, just a bit down-river from that southbound tow.   I think that the next island down river on the right hand side is "Portage Island".   Check out steve's website with the hot-link on the rigth hand side of this web page.

Who Were Those People In the Boat Crash in Yesterday's Pic ? ------ Captain Paul Asher out of Woodland Marina and of the houseboat, that is soon to be named, "A-sher Thing" recognized them.   What are the chances of that ?   This looks like an older picture to me and Paul says he is only in his 20's.   Take a look - we identified them in the picture.   Hah !    Thanks for helping out Paul.

03-23- 05
Our River Picture of the Day ------ is of a   runabout that crashed through the side of a cruiser.   Looks like the bow of the smaller boat went all the way through the cruiser, knocked the top loose and up away from the boat.   Captain Gary Bowers out of  Woodland Marina sent in this picture.   He is not sure of the origin, but I did notice that the cruiser has Missouri numbers on it.   They are probably not Alton Pool boaters.   FYI - Gary is the guy that takes care of RiverBill's when I am out of town.   Thanks for the picture Gary.

Welcome to Spring ! ------ Yesterday was the first day of Spring.   That is when the direct rays of the Sun are over the Equator, marking the Vernal Equinox.   It is also when the daylight hours are just about equal to the nighttime hours.   From now until the Summer Solstice, around June 21, the hours of daylight will continue to increase.   That is good news for boaters. Our River Picture of the Day ------ Is another   "Award Winning"   photo from Steve Schulte.   I am going to name it Reflections.   It is the reflection of the bluff in the river and more.   It is beauty of the bluff, the river road and the mansion on top of the bluff.   Many of us have seen this mansion from the river, now we know what the place really looks like.   What a view they must have.   Steve took this picture yesterday when he was flying. He said it was the first time he seen the reflections like this in the river.  Stay tuned; we have more of these coming over the next few days. Great work Steve.

They stopped to see if they could help.   They found out they were only out of gas and that the escort vehicle had already left to get some.   The driver gave them an impromptu tour of the boat and then Darryll took some pictures of the keel boat,   the Discovery Expedition logo on the door of the truck, of his friend Ron Hering posing with the driver and finally Darryll got his picture taken with the driver.
